It's debatable that 2009 is Australia's most devastating bushfire season. 2019/2020 burnt far more area, more than 24 MILLION hectares (the 2018 California wild fires burnt 800,000 hectares as a comparison) This is more area than the entire size of Great Brittan. However, in 2009 many more people were killed (173) due to the rapid spread of the fire whereas there were 34 fatalities in the 2019/2020 fire season.
