This is a video describing some of the things I've found helpful living with my half body cast (Spica cast) for my shoulder. I hope this helps someone out there like me who was looking for information on a cast like this.

I was in a cast like that when I was 10 years old but mine was for a (badly) broken humerus and shoulder. I was hit by a motorcycle not far from home. My entire right side was smashed. I had a fractured femur just above the knee, along with several broken ribs. The worst injury was the compound fracture of my humerus because my arm/shoulder got run over. I spent three months in a full leg cast as well as the shoulder spica. I was pretty much immobile the whole time. It was really tough.... My arm was casted in a different position than yours with the hand facing down and the bar was shorter.

You should make an update video! Do you have any other videos with your cast on?

Fantastic video! Very inspiring! Is there a way you could do another video showing more about the cast? like showing you doing some of the everyday things you have to do and how you do them in the cast? Also maybe showing you moving around in the cast walking around and going up and sown stairs. maybe even getting in and out of the car and going out someplace in public. is this possible? once again thanks so much and your vid is so inspiring

Hi Bryan. Thanks for watching my video. I will be posting another video soon. It will include some of the actions you listed above. I apologize for not being able to post one earlier on. I was transitioning into a different brace which made my pain increase significantly.

It’s almost like they should have casted your fingers as well just so they wouldn’t be cold. Would there have been any disadvantage to that since you couldn’t really use your hand anyway?

Hi Alan. Yes, I can try to do one with my different shoulder/scapular braces. I think that's a great idea! I will only be able to wear the one I am in now, but I can definitely show and talk about them.

Hi Yash, I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I was in pretty immense pain throughout my journey with all of the different braces and casts, but everyone is different. It really all depends on the reason for you being immobilized in the first place. I can tell you that with a lot of patience and hard work, things do get better. We did not think I would ever really regain function of my left arm or that the intense pains would subside, but with proper treatment and over a year of intensive physical therapy, I now how full use of my left arm and very limited pain on that side. I hope this gives you some hope that things can get better even though they may take a really long time.

Hi Julie. Just wondering if this was from an injury or if you have EDS. I have EDS and have had 5 major shoulder reconstructions (3 on the left and 2 on the right) over the years due to multidirectional instability. Now I'm facing a shoulder fusion and at least 12 weeks in a spica 😒 But the dislocations are out of control and if I can get some semblance of my life back, I'll go for it.
@juliemilunsky26186 жыл бұрын
Basswife26, I have EDS. It wasn’t from any particular injury, just significant multi-directional instability. Though this process has been long, it has definitely been worth it. I was in large braces after this cast as well. One of the biggest issues was scapular dyskinesia. Putting my in the spica cast helped stabilize everything and then we retrained all of the muscles around my shoulder. Once I had better muscle control, I then had surgery to tighten the capsule and anchor it. I also had pretty severe issues with CRPS. I am now 3 months post-op and doing very well. And I’ve also had treatment for the CRPS with stellate ganglion blocks. It’s the only thing that helped. I hope this answers your question. I’m happy to talk to you more about it. I’m hoping to make another update video soon
@Basswife266 жыл бұрын
Julie Milunsky I had a feeling that you had EDS lol. Most people don't dislocate posteriorly, as I'm sure you know. That's the main direction I go in as well, although I woke up last month with a full anterior dislocation. I hope the tightening of the capsule holds for many years for you. Thank you for responding so quick and for the info on the ganglion block as well. Maybe that's something to look into as well. I've been on opioids for many years due to my dislocations/surgeries. My last tightening was 15 years ago, but I knew immediately that it didn't work (the one the year before didn't either). I've lived with it since then, but it's becoming much looser now and is hanging from the socket pretty much all the time now. Again thank you so much. Your video was by far the most informative I've seen on having to have a spica. Great job!!

Dear Julie. Could you say at what clinic you had their shoulder cast done? A very close friend of mine needs exactly this but his clinic says they do not do this. He is desperate, they insist on operation. But his heart is not good. Thanks!
