Always enjoy duck hunting videos, when you were a kid and those guys said let them work , they were just saying don’t ruin our hunt, by sky busting. I guided for waterfowl and fish in my life. Now I don’t take people hunting unless they have common sense and the ability to listen. As a kid and young man some of the biggest jerks were guides just going after limits to get paid and not teaching or Instilling any values or ethics or rules and the people they took hunting. Weather it be on public land or private land I have seen so called guides introduce complete morons to the sport . When you say your a guide how serious are you about the meaning of that word . Being a guide is just that , a very serious teacher. Have you ever sat a person down and said your done, have you ever spent five minutes with a customer and said your not going? Have you ever suggested to customer that this is not a sport for you? Because a guide a really good guide has to know when to make those calls literally. I’ve hunted all over Alaska, pacific north west, and I’m always looking to make friends and never start any problems, but as far as duck hunting goes, I have found that they are far to many guides that are not qualified, but think they are because the can blow a duck call. I’m laid up and will miss this whole season from back surgery, I will be down for one year, I will dearly miss hunting with my girls , but when next year comes I will be back. By they way I do walk my talk, hunting is to special to me to waste it with anyone that is their to not enjoy it with safety’s and common sense. And I have avoided confrontation to a point , but I have definitely cracked the heads and stocks of more the one or 2 guides that have no business ruining other people’s hunts. My buddy sent me your video and I will give it a thumbs up, but it would be nice to sea a duck hunting video for once that talks directly to the hunters about what to look for before they take people out. Meaning if people are idiots with money that does not make them customers, you won’t see me making a video because I won’t take out idiots , and if a guide can’t spot an idiot , then they have no business calling themselves a guide. Not an upset guy just tired of people saying I got to feed my family and letting morons hunt. So how many times have you said no before the hunt has started? If it has been once or only a few Times in several years then your in the wrong business, if your making videos then also talk about what to look for before you go out , a good guide should no this in his gut before the first shot. Thanks for your time and happy hunting

There’s a reason a never comment on videos, I just not good at it . Anyways thank goodness for my wife,

As a boy and teenager I used to love the excitement of the main callers in our blind working the ducks until they were floating right there in front of our blind and the lead caller yelled “Take ‘em!” or “Cut them!” The group of hunters my father hunted with always had that sense of duck hunting ethics, I appreciate that so much now as an adult. Now that I get to call them, hailing to break them off, swinging them on a corner, gently chuckle and quack (or let them do it on their own) until their feet are nearly touching the water; I am absolutely addicted! It is what keeps me coming back even on days with tough ducks who won’t finish, still love working them even if we don’t get to shoot. Thanks for the video!

Joel great video, I’m glad someone addressed this topic. I’m cringing at a lot of the content out there with all the pass shooting. Letting them work is how I was taught and is seriously missing in new hunters. We called it “Toes and Nose”. Wait till they are landing and as they are landing aim for the toes and as they are coming up aim for the nose. Thanks again for the good videos.

More and more hunters are coming up with no dad or mentor to show them how to hunt. While KZbin isn’t the best way to teach them, at least it’s a start. I’m hoping that guys will come together through this.

@@SurvivingDuckSeason i was started out in clubs then just turned loose clueless. Making myself into a semi skilled waterfowler took me decades in the duck desert. I put myself thru many fruitless hunts before I finally got it the right place at the right time for 60 days in shangri-la. The irony is that I walked into a 10 man blind all set up. The guy asked, "what would you change?". Said "nothing its perfect and im home". Id hunted alone for 35 years and could recognize perfection. ANYONE can buy a guide license..

Oh man, at 8 minutes into the video, that suspense that builds from working a single or pair is why I duck hunt. You can have your deer with big horns. I enjoy all forms of hunting and outdoor activities, but nothing does it for me like waterfowl. More needs to be explained and demonstrated to young people about the respect and true art of decoying ducks rather than trying your luck at 80 yard passing shots. It adds more challenge and satisfaction to the hunt. Love your videos brother - some of the best waterfowl content on KZbin.

Love finishing ducks. My youth hunts were on a private pond, so I experienced feet down shooting 50 years ago. It is Tough to remain patient as public land hunters. Every trip we lose many opportunities when ducks flair and fly away when someone shoots a quarter mile or more away as the birds are turning onto final. The longer the ducks work, the more likely someone else’s shooting is going to impact your success.

Amazing camera work, loved every bit of it. Controlling the urge to shoot is the most important part of duck hunting, I am working on it too. But hunting on public lands it usually is very challenging, you may pass up on a group and let them work but someone else in the other blind may ruin the shot for you.

I think there are certainly days (anywhere) that guys are better off not calling. I’ve hunted a fair amount in western states and Canada. On lots of days, if we didn’t call we wouldn’t shoot a duck. I think it’s super dependent on time of the season, pressure, and who’s calling. Thanks!

I have never hunted public in California, so I can't speak about a specific location there, but have hunted in the most heavily pressured public hunting areas in the world... so I do understand what you are saying. Most guys feel the way you do about public hunting in any state. That's part of the problem- and why it continues getting worse. I do know plenty of guys (in all flyways) who hunt public and shoot decoying ducks. It's not easy, but it can be done. The only long term solution I know of is changing people's minds.

If you think about ducks always are going to circle and circle until they get in the wind right and don’t see nothing that flares them. If you are working ducks my personal opinion is to not call much if any and the decoys and water motion do the work. If I do call I use a soft feed call and soft muffled quacks. Think about the sound of content ducks on the water sounds just like that every once in a while you’ll hear one get loud. If we as hunters would stop calling at every duck that flies over ex. ones that are sky high and not coming in our success would start going up.
@SurvivingDuckSeason
@SurvivingDuckSeason 4 жыл бұрын
That is certainly a strategy that works in many places. Duck calling doesn't work the same everywhere. It's most important to read the ducks and use what you need to get them in. When I hunt in high traffic areas with large concentrations of ducks, I find that more calling and aggressive calling works much better. It surprises a lot of guys that hunt with me (for the first time) how well it works. The key is being purposeful in your calling and reading the ducks.

Surviving Duck Season I also think that some ducks like to be called to were some don’t like it or they just like a little bit of calling. @daviddenis1295
@daviddenis1295 2 жыл бұрын
I let them work as close as they will get. For me I shoot a full choke, and I am comfortable with my shooting enough to take birds at 40 yards, so once they are inside that over the decoys fair game. But never do I shoot them just flying by or sky bust. There is a big enough problem with that on public land I will not contribute to it

Man this year we set up in the corner of a pond near some other hunters. We could have worked the ducks back and forth or even together but every time the ducks would come near out spread they would start blasting at them. No one shot a duck that day when we all could have limited out. Public land really sucks sometimes.

You would fit into our group well. No strings attached. I believe we could both benefit from you joining our very small group if you are interested. Joshua Eck yes and yes. The advantage of using bismuth, TSS, or HeviShot Tungsten is that you can go lighter. The smaller shot size patterns way better that bigger steel shot. Also when you get back to a 2 3/4 it’s considered a square load. So shorter shot string with most of your pattern hitting the flying target. With 3 inch or especially 3 1/2 you actually can have less pellets hit a flying duck. Probably more info than you asked for lol.

Ahhh... the age old conundrum of letting ducks work vs. whacking them from the stratosphere. 38 seasons for me, so a person learns or he/she doesn't. The more "experiences" afield, the better one becomes, or do they? I've heard, "It's not skybusting, if you hit!", but also skybusting does educate the other ducks, it has a false education that everyone who opens up on a high flock might scratch one down (so they consider it a success), but not admitting they wasted their money on excessive shooting, flared the other birds and possibly wounded the other birds to fly off and die. I've seen many examples of both and yes, have taken some tall shots myself (of course when I was younger and dumber). Realistically, I'm more effective and successful with killing ducks at 20-30 yds, than 40, 50 or beyond. 20 to 15 yards with an IC is best (for me). I use to hunt with an old Virginian Bayman (almost 70 years old) who would only let his "sports" shot the duck within 15-20 yds. He, himself would only shoot the ducks when they touched the water or actually on the water. That way he was sure that the duck would be killed. I think that today's younger duck hunters want to hunt, but their eagerness to "shoot" outweighs the desire to learn. This past season, I witnessed some young hunters in a party blind, gangbanging single birds. How do they even know who killed the bird, when 6 hunters shoot at one duck, (3 rounds each)? That's 18 shots fired at 1 duck! Plus, they didn't pick up their spent shells! Best way to let OTHER hunters know where the ducks WERE, to burn out a marsh and let the MAN know what's going on. 18 shot volleys and a trashed out blind might attract law enforcement, more than waterfowl. Also, it doesn't help now to have the advent of the latest gear and gadgets, GoPros and selfmade superstars to film their hunts, put them on the web and become (in their minds) "Duck Hunting Ledgends" at the tender age of 22! Kinda narcissistic huh? Who's to blame? Anyway, i'll continue to hunt and kill ducks (at 20yds). Oh, and use a dog! They are the best conservation tool known to the waterfowler! Thanks for the positive videos! Cheers

In the 1980’s Duck hunting became a fad with duck hunting DVDs....on those shows it appears that they are shooting ducks far off..and I believe they have the mentality of if they can shoot that far so can I. In reality the shots are only 35 yards, it’s the camera making them look farther than the ducks really are.....so newer hunters haven’t been taught how to decoy and finish ducks....it’s becoming a lost art. Great job Joel,

I actually think it’s even worse in the last 6 or 8 years with gopro videos on KZbin. They really make the ducks look a long way out. It’s on all of us who ‘know” to teach the guys who don’t. Thanks for the comments.

I see them like that more times than not,its funny the amount who spend huge amounts of money on leases and still bang away at them at 75 yards.

Absolutely prefer to let ducks work. Very frustrating hunting public land and all the duck commanders blasting everything flying by.

Congrats on the 1 year. I've always liked the vids you have put out. Can't wait for the next ones. Gotta love killing birds with their feet down. Those dang teal can come out of nowhere and be gone before you know it. That's what makes them so fun. Keep up the great vids 👍👍👍
