A lot of the "shock" really stems from the show prioritizing certain personalities on a season instead of weaving a tight narrative. So many winners on this list are women who played a great game, albeit not flashy. And the show pays them dust by purposely downplaying their character arcs and shoving to our faces the big personalities of the season. Which is fair because it is a TV show meant to entertain, but to not show a winner's path to victory will always end up shocking the audience. There should be a balance between entertainment (flashy moves) and a well-edited winner's narrative.

@3amDayDreamer4 жыл бұрын
Sandra played a very low key game. I have rewatched HvV a few times and I realized that the moment Sandra got to the merge, she started working on her jury management. I think with Sandra, it's all about perception. Who knew if Sandra really cared for the Heroes, but it really looked like she cared. Sandra began her Jury performance at tribal as well. Even when she played that idol, I looked at jury and then looked at Rupert and Colby. She actually took both out of the game that night. Russell saw Sandra as a goat, so she pretended to be a goat. In the meantime, she was worked with people on the Jury. That's why she said "I don't know about that" when Russell said she was going to get only one vote. Parvati should I have worked with the jury. It seemed that she was focused on playing a strong game. Jury management and socializing with the Heroes would have helped her. I love at final 3, Parvati and Sandra verified to audience that Russell wasn't going to win and he was the goat. Sandra is a different type of winner. The fact that she won twice with the same method along with her jury managing skills makes her a great player and the deserving winner. I know a lot of players in HvV watched that season and put a lot of pieces together when it came to Sandra. People always care about big moves, but the small subtle moves add up and it really did for Sandra.

First off - this is a fascinating list! I think a solid argument could be made for Jenna Morasca as one of the most shocking winner reveals. Up until that point, the winners were either given a Machiavellian strategist edit (i.e., Richard & Brian) or the social butterfly “sidekick” to an obvious powerhouse of the season (i.e., Tina to Colby, Ethan to Lex, Vecepia to Sean/Rob). Jenna was the first winner I remember who didn’t have either a highly strategic edit or the edit of a “social butterfly” sidekick. She was edited as one of the season’s immature “mean girls” who the audience was meant to root against. The show intentionally included her wanting to quit the game, and they were even starting to show Matthew as being a potential strategic threat by the final six/five (similar to the edit Lisa Donahue received in Big Brother 3). To be clear, I do think Jenna is a worthy winner in her own right (as all Survivor winners are), but she was never framed by the show to be a worthy candidate of the victory until the final episode of the season.

Survivor is only about 2 things. 1. Get to the end. 2. Convince your seasons specific jury to vote for you. Nothing else. Whatever it takes to make those two things happen is what it takes. This is explained ever since the season 1 finale. The players do not have to appease the audience or juries from other seasons, only their specific jury. Juries can be bitter and typically that is due to massive missteps by the person being judged. For example, Boston Rob and Russell Hantz treating their juries in a way that did not appease them. Interesting list, but I would have made a few changes on my list: 1. Survivor: Vanuatu - Chris upsets Twila 5 to 2! Survived first Tribal Council as a target and last man standing against 6 women. He should have been back for Winners at War. 2. Survivor: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers - Ben upsets Chrissy 5 to 2 (plus 1 for Ryan). Both had different yet effective gameplay to get to the end, but I think Chrissy was more deserving of the win. If she didn’t win one of those immunity challenges, she would have been voted out. And she went from vomiting at the first challenge to overcoming her self-doubt. 3. Survivor: Guatemala - Danni upsets Stephenie 6 to 1! Stephenie was a force to be reckoned with after her disaster on Palau with Ulong. She got to the merge with other people on her tribe, took part in a tribe swap, and was at the center of a good alliance. But her arrogance cost her the win. FYI - Danni was my pick to win that season so I’m glad she won! 4. Survivor: Worlds Apart - Mike beats Carolyn 6 to 1 (plus 1 vote for Will by a bitter Rodney). Carolyn had her alliance on the jury and Mike had to win Immunity every time after pissing off the tribe by trying to pull a bait-and-switch with letters from loved ones at the Survivor auction. Upset I wanted to see the most: Survivor: Redemption Island - Phillip Sheppard upsets Boston Rob!! One of my least favorite seasons ever (but Survivor: Thailand and Palau are the two most boring and predictable seasons ever). Nothing would have brought me more joy than to see the jury vote for Phillip out of spite against Boston Rob. People complain about Russell Hantz’s gameplay and arrogance and lack of respect for other players, yet Boston Rob plays the same way and gets praised for it. It would have been fun to watch Phillip play Winners at War and see how far he could have gone.

I read an article a while back where the writer talked about how shocked he was that Jenna Morasca won “Amazon” due to the very negative edit she received on her season. Of course, what we must bare in mind is that, even if she was whiny and ‘spoiled’ like Jeff Probst said she was, what her win really boiled down to was the good relationships she had with the jury members, which Matthew didn’t seem to have. Plus, it really didn’t hurt that she got rid of Rob Cesternino when she finally had the chance, so I guess that gave her the edge.

Russell forgot one important strategy which is "jury management". Having a bitter jury is inevitable. And maybe, just maybe, Natalie knows that. So to give Russell a perspective, what if Natalie manipulated and used him to doing her bidding without him even realizing it? She doesn't wanna do the dirty work herself as she figure the jury will be bitter. And as the tribe merged, she knew that Laura, Erik, John, Dave, Monica, etc all them except for Shambo was clueless 90% of the time will be bitter and spiteful. Russell under estimated the jury and that was his biggest mistake.

I just have to say, Chris got (and still gets) an unnecessary amount of flack for his game, but I think he played an excellent game. He got dealt horribly rotten lemons and made superb lemonade out of it. The name of the game was to survive the Edge long enough to make it back to the game and win out, and he did exactly that- almost perfectly. He absolutely dominated the finale of EOE, and although he never had the best story or best overall season narrative, he did exactly what anyone needed to do to win the game: get to the end and convince your specific jury why you're the best one to win the game. He played an amazing 2nd place game, but winning Survivor is only about 2 things. For example, Russell Hantz treating his jury in a way that did not appease them. He made them bitter and in a way, he didn't outplay the jury, he outplayed himself.

I felt that way after the live vote reveal, but then I eventually came to my senses and realized that Russell’s social game is as weak as his strategic game is strong. The jury has to like you more (or hate you less) than they like (or hate) the other finalists.

Imo russel had everything in his resume to win but he made jets decisions that brought him down. Jason would have followed him anywhere and he also wasn’t liked as much as Natalie. And mick would have voted for russel no matter what because mick respected russels dominance at the time. Also his jury responses brought him down because he tried to play a outplay over out socialize against someone who played a piggyback game but in Natalies favor she played a very smart game by riding the coattails and helping him take out her foes while securing there votes on the way out while keeping russel from realizing that she was pulling the win out from under him. But imo a Jason, russel, shambo final ends in split between shambo and russel with russel winning by a vote

Russell played the best game. It shouldn't have been a popularity contest.

Let's be real though.....this video says " the MOST shocking " and honestly I really really wanted Ozzy to win but it was definitely not a "shock" that Yul won coz as much as I wanted him to win they both deserved it and they both played a great game and that showed on the votes coz Ozzy lost with only one vote is wasn't a far off win....it was clearly not a shock, they were both good

Tips to Win Survivor : Don't make strategies to survive. Be cool with every Contestant. Don't form a group against other Contestant Don't involve in a Group, make your own decision Don't argue with any Contestants During a heated situation stay away Don't be alone all the time...

It hurts so much seeing Russell losing to Natalie. The jury was so pissed cause they had the numbers and he managed to outplay them so hard. The reason about his ego is bullshit. They just couldn't accept someone is that good in the game. Cause they were trying to vote him of but they couldn't so they start hating him.

Part of great gameplay is managing the jury and pleasing them. Russell doesn't care about this part of the game (as he said during the HvV reunion) and it is why he only gets to final tribal and never has the juries respect.
@Tzedi4 жыл бұрын
@@OnceUponAnIsland True but in modern survivor there is no way russel would lose. Also i dont feel he was so bad with them during the game. They were the opposing aliance and they were gunning for him all the time. I feel attacking his personality was more of an excuse cause they couldnt believe someone humiliate them this much.

@@Tzedi Except Russell was playing in 2009 and needed to play a game that appeased his jury. He doesn't care about appeasing the jury.
@OnceUponAnIsland4 жыл бұрын
@@Tzedi And in modern Survivor Russell would never reach the end. In fact, he has been voted out at the first tribal he goes to in both of his appearances since HvV and we haven't seen another player play like him and reach the end.

@@OnceUponAnIsland What I was saying is that jury's now put strategy first. A game changing performance like this would be more welcomed. Now if u are a goat is the worst thing for a player based on modern survivor jury's. No one like Natalie won neither the last seasons of the show. True I think is very difficult for Russell to reach final tribal if he plays again but if it was his first time playing he would do good also in modern survivor.

It's really kind of insane to me how Richard could have done what he did in Season 1. Like I feel like Survivor should have had a few seasons of people playing nice and the winner being the person who does best at the game before someone shows up with the guile to win via alliances, tactics and playing the people rather than the game. But no. Richard came in for the very first season and set the tone for how all of reality competition TV would be from that day forward. He is Reality TV's Original Sin. And that's why he deserved to win.

I think when it comes to Rob and Amber, the jury was so angry with Rob and still feeling resentment that they threw their votes to Amber. Amber in my opinion really didn't do anything.

Interesting how editing sometimes influences fan perception, but not always. I did not want Aubry to win, I was actually rooting for Tai, and was def shocked when Michelle won but honestly, Michelle's win is one of my faves and she 100 percent deserved it and it frustrates me that she received such a backlash for her win, and I kinda blame production/editing. :( I honestly would have loved to see her win WaW (even tho I love Tony also) - Michelle has good instincts even if she is not always on the right side of numbers and I am glad they showed her personality more on WaW because she is great!
