Elway was great in his own way but I feel for Dan, he did not have the same offensive firepower that Elway was fortunate to have at the end of his career. He had two HOF skill players in Davis and Sharpe. Also had Rod Smith and Mccaffrey. You could see from the jump in this game, two dropped passes by Marino's receivers and a dropped INT on defense. Those are the things that can wildly swing games b/w two HOF QBs. I wish Marino would've gotten a talent like Davis at some point in his career. Still a very cool game to watch now. @@clickman443 Marino did the same thing in order free up cap space. JJ was really good at adding defensive players, but swung and missed badly on offense, especially WR and RB. During this time it appeared as if Mike Shanahan was going to be what Bill Belichek became. Shanahan might’ve been able to accomplish that if Elway has as much football in front of him as Tom Brady did when BB started off his Patriots resume. Didn’t like when Shanahan was fired at all. Turns out Shanahan & Plummer we’re both better than their young wunderkind replacements. I was always of that opinion regarding Shanahan ( at the time as well ) but I’ll admit that I wasn’t as smart with the premature replacing of Plummer as I fell in love with Cutlers arm. But it was evident that it wasn’t a good move before too long.

This game was over in the first half. The Broncos had a chip on their shoulder from their previous loss to Miami. They wanted to bury them and they did. It just goes to show that Marino never had a running game and the reason why he doesn't have a ring. That also includes a defense, Elway finally had the running game and the defense in the Super Bowl to get him those two rings.

Football is dynamic and reciprocal (offense and defense). The common thing that happens in the playoffs is defenses are THAT much better, both per game performance and the selection that the process gives. In this game at least, Miami ran the ball for 14 yards. It is hard to win when you run for 14 yards, no matter how else it is sliced. Miami had significant injuries on both sides - but specifically the front rush with Bowens and Taylor. We can try to tie a theme to it but the difference is Miami couldn't run, was missing defenders, and playing a team with high skill position on ground and air AND had two weeks of rest. Would have been a miracle to pull a win for Miami

Miami had 1,535 yards rushing, averaging just 3.4 ypc, in 1998. In this game, they rushed for 14 yards on 13 attempts while the defense gave up 250 yards. Marino completed 70% of his passes in the game, despite two blatant drops on short passes on the first drive and a drop at the goal line on the third drive, where a TD changes the tone of the game. Further, in this game, the starting LT, LG and TE were out. Recall Troy Drayton, TE, had 64 yards receiving in the first game working the middle of the field. The Broncos lost the first game when Elway went 13-36 with two interceptions as Davis rushed for 29 yards on 16 carries. Seems, when a team can't run against a good defense, that defense gears up very well to defend the pass as even Elway floundered when the defense didn't have to respect the run game.

@@dennismumford6108 The '82 Dolphins had the #2 ranked defense and #10 ranked offense, so they were balanced. In fact, the defense gave up 300 yards only twice in the regular season and once in the playoffs, in the SB loss. In getting to the SB, they rushed for 214, 214, and 138 yards in the playoffs but lost the SB when they only gained 96 yards. By '84, the defense had slipped to 7th in points and 19th in yards allowed, giving up 300+ yards nine times, including 400 yards five times in the regular season and 537 yards to San Diego. In the playoffs they were solid against Seattle giving up less than 300 yards total, but then gave up 455 yards to Mark Malone's Steelers in the AFC Championship and 537 more yards to SF in the SB. The offense also ran well in the playoffs w 143 and 134 yards respectively, but only 25 yards against SF. By the way, the entire 49er secondary made the pro-bowl that year. Marino's best year actually might have been 1992 when he guided the team to the AFC Championship with a team heavily reliant on passing as they could only run for 1525 yards that year, 3.7 ypc. They of course lost the AFC Championship game after nine dropped passes (it's all on video) including two sure TD's. Starting WR Mark Duper would be cut in the offseason and never play another down. Mark Clayton was also released and played another year as a fourth receiver for the Packers. Think about that. Getting to the AFC Championship game without the ability to run while one starting WR wasn't good enough to play for another team and the other being a fourth stringer and the starting RB also being pushed out of the NFL following the season. Elway, as great as he was, couldn't win it all until he had an entire team around him. Give Marino Rice, Roger Craig, Terrell Davis, Thurman Thomas, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin and just a whiff of a defense and he too has multiple rings.

They hammered Denver just a few weeks before, 31-21. Marino threw for 355 yards and fired 4 TDs and Elway had a horrible game , going 13/36 for 150 yds and 2 picks. So yeah, I am sure Miami thought they had a remote chance.

The fact the Dolphins owned the Broncos 2nd to last game of the regular season the Broncos really were focused and ready for them after the Dolphins beat the Bills in the wildcard to set up the meeting in Denver. Plus 3 years in a row besides the loss to the Jaguars the Broncos were unstoppable at home. This 38-3 win was not only that the Broncos were a much better team but they were pissed about getting alittle hammered by them

If you watched the America's Game episode on the 1998 Broncos, all three of the interviewees (Shannon Sharpe, Mark Schlereth, & TD) made special mention of the fact that they really wanted to destroy Miami in this game. I seem to remember a sprinkling of "experts" that like a Miami upset - someone on Inside the NFL, perhaps (going from memory).

As a matter of fact, in 1998, the Dolphins had the number one scoring defense in football. However, like J B said in his reply, Denver smoked them. It was clearly a revenge game for the Broncos considering how they lost 31-21 in Miami in Week 16. I don't remember the Dolphins stomping on anything after their win the prior week over Buffalo. But, I will not start an argument with anyone about it.

Miami was missing it's two best defensive linemen, Jason Taylor and Tim Bowens, in this game. Denver was a better team and was going to win, but it wouldn't have gotten out of hand like this if those two were healthy.

It's truly a shame that Marino and Elway only faced each other THREE times in their careers. WTH is up with that? Could you imagine if Brady and Manning only played 3 times? I know a lot of it is Marino's awful playoff record and not going very far but still, why only 2 regular season meetings?
@walterlv01
@walterlv01 3 жыл бұрын
The formula for non-divisional scheduling at the time was entirely based on where a team finished in the standings the prior year and there was no cycle like there is today. These two teams just kept missing each other based on where they wound up in the standings.

Denver was gonna win this game for a couple of reasons:1. Dolphins showboating on the lines after beating Denver 2. Denver was looking for some payback after that loss and 3.the week before playing Denver, much as I respect jimmy Johnson, the lowest thing him and the dolphins did after beating buffalo in Miami was that they stomped on some flutie flakes after the game and Doug flutie must’ve called Denver and asked them to put a pounding on Miami..
