Vinny is now gone also. We will miss you. The good thing is that he is now back with his wife Sandi whom he met through the Rams owner Carroll Rosenbloom in the early 70s. RIP Vinny and John.

R.I.P. Vin Scully and John Madden. Vin was so versatile doing NFL and PGA for CBS alongside his Dodger duties. Then he went to NBC as the lead baseball announcer. They don't make them like Vin and John anymore. Just brilliant. This footage is very special for us Dodger and Rams fans.

The games that Vin Scully and John Madden did together in 1981 are as follows: wk 1 Phil NYG, wk 2 NYG Wash, wk 3 GB LA, wk 4 Atl Cle Richard, I have all of them if you want to post them. The first game Summerall and Madden did together is week 5 Dal St L. Summerall and Madden did a game together in 1979 but Madden was much more subdued in style.

I could now tell why CBS chose Summeral to work with Madden rather than Scully. Both Vin and John seemed to go into different directions. Summeral was at least compatible with Madden's explosive style while Scully appeared not to deviate from form. Frank Glieber who would work with Madden filling in for Summeral who'd be on US tennis open duties started in 1982 also would do a good job meshing with Madden (a KZbin game of them is available), but Scully would just stick to his traditional approach. Was better off doing baseball at NBC.

Vinny tried to do play by play and color commentary, so how the heck can you fit in Madden, perhaps the best color commentator of all time? Madden also was completely focused on the X's and O's side of things, so if Vinny stuck to the action, you'd miss the great background information only Vin would provide. The pairing could've been great, but as they say, too much of a good thing. Scully imho wouldve been fine all by himself in an NFL booth, but football producers seem to prefer at least a couple guys, even when its horrible as with Buck and Aikman.

@@kilgoretrout321 lol. Yea, I think a couple "one announcer" booths like you were talking about might have been good (just dont do the 1981 "Dick Enberg" experiment where they aired his prerecorded interviews between plays). One caller booths wouldve looked odd compared to 2 or 3 maners however. Scully Ive seen call Dodgers games on TV by himself, say no more. Although, the same analogy you mentioned as to why Scully & Madden could not work together could also apply to why Scully and Tim McCarver would not be able to work together.

Vin did football really well. Love listening to him call football games. He and George Allen were fantastic together. Vin should NOT have just stuck to baseball.

@@shanetrimble9265 I think it was a matter of money & pride for Mr. Scully. The pride part was that he didnt like being turned down from the #1 NFL job. The money part wouldve been what NBC paid him to come over and be their #1 BASEBALL guy. Networks having Saturday baseball (NBC then, CBS in the early '90s & even Fox later on) have had the headache of logistics of assigning announcers who cover both their Saturday baseball broadcasts and their Sunday football broadcasts. I've heard many question as to why Vin Scully didnt even call one football game for NBC while he was there. I believe the reason it was important to keep the lead person on the main September baseball game that weekend (without inserting a substitute like NBC did when Bob Costas was the "backup" announcer back then when he was it's NFL studio host) and I dont think NBC wanted to "wedge" Vin into an already existing NFL announcing team (and kick someone out) when the baseball season was over. Sure, there mayve been some fill in spots available for a week only but then he wouldve had to have done fresh research on a sport he never called since CBS. He was doing golf for NBC as well during the winter months (Charlie Jones usually took over during the baseball season) and he continued local Dodgers games. I know that there was talk when NBC lost baseball of an extension where they'd offer him a YEAR ROUND golf slate and some other assignments (IDK if that wouldve included football) maybe the olympics but Scully left and (da da da dat tadaaa!) Bryant Gumbel took over golf for the 1990 year, then Jones in 91, then after that Jim Lampley for a couple years until Dick Enberg in 1995. It should also be said ABC had a headache letting Al Michaels off of it's national Monday Night Football Games 2 or so times a season when he was doing the MLB post season. Joe Buck, Thom Brennaman at Fox and Dick Stockton & Greg Gumbel at CBS had similar situations.
