Les Stroud is shipwrecked on the desert island of Tiburon. After 5 days of surviving on the shore, he treks in-land in search of food, water and shelter. In the mountainous desert landscape, Les must avoid packs of wild coyotes, scorpions and rattlesnakes. Alone and carrying heavy camera equipment, he is at risk of exposure and dehydration. Making fire to distill drinking water, he survives on clams and edible plants in this ten- day survival ordeal.

Mr Stroud is a Class Act! Several years ago, maybe circa 2016-2017, I was lucky enough to have a random encounter with Les. He wasn't supposed to be where I was working that day but because of an alternate location issue, he and his film crew were pointed to the facility in which I just happened to be that day installing security apparatus, access control, cameras etc. When it came to Les's attention that I was a huge fan and wanted to meet him, he accommodated immediately, stopping what he was doing just to come meet, shake my hand, and allow me a photo opp with him! I'm still a huge fan and still cherish my photo of Les Stroud in pink scrubs (not kidding) and myself!

That water distillery is one of the coolest survival skills Ive seen, Im shocked it wasnt used more often in history or in survival situations. Its relatively simple, effective and most of the materials are reasonably common on any coast

I mean the materials for a still have only become common on shores in the last couple of decades, but even then finding a bucket without a hole, with a makeshift lid and a pipe, be it plastic or metal is very unlikely on any coast of the world. The materials for a solar still on the other hand, i.e. a pit and some plastic tarp are much more easily to come by.

Aristotle and Alexander of Aphrodisias have written about using a simple distillery method to produce drinking water on ships at sea. But this must've been something of a last resort. You wouldn't bring burning material only for distilling water when you can bring its weight in water instead.

The secret to bend copper without kinks is to fill the tube with fine sand. This allows the copper to bend and keep it's shape. Ive been 650 to 780 lbs the last thirty years watching Les has rekindled my passion of being in the woods on survival trips. I started a diet a couple months ago and im down to 575 lbs and loseing im sticking with it. Im 63 and I know i got enough years left to make a few trips. When i was younger i did several month long survival trips took a 22 with 3 bullets a hatchet a army sleeping bag and a pocket knife and a small bag of salt thats it. My dad would drop me off in a 3000 acre hunting lease. No cell phones no way of getting in touch with anyone.

Hey Les, pro tip from 1 fellow Canadian to another. When you are trying to bend soft piping or tubing, fill it completely with sand prior to bending and try your best to plug the ends. The sand inside provides support and completely eliminates kinking. I actually have done this for work (we actually use lead ingots instead of sand. We would pour molten lead into straight sections of tubing, let it cool and solidify, then proceed to make extremely tight radius 180° bends. Once the bending is done, we would elevate the bend, apply direct flame heat, and watch the molten lead run out the tube end into a collection container) Sand is often used on larger diameter piping when mandrel bending is impractical.

You inspired me as a small 12 year old Boy Scout to dive deep into the rabbit hole of backpacking, survival, hunting, search and rescue which led to becoming a medic and working at a hospital. Les, this is one of the best episodes I’ve had the opportunity to watch - compelling. The oysters and the illness you experienced is something I’m familiar with and I’ll not eat them again without steaming or outright cooking them over a fire. You can almost always eat fresh caught fish raw but shellfish is another story as you well know. That was scary when you almost lost your fire. This is why I’m such a huge fan - its life or death and not scripted.

If those Oysters were really on Mangrove roots then they could've absorbed a lot of the Iron-heavy tannins that Mangroves typically have.

Yeah...I don't think I'd eat those raw from there either. Too much iron at one time will wreck the stomach. Main reason humans get sick from ingesting too much blood. That's not iced tea for sure!

@@boygenius538_8 I'm no chemist or pro chef but I doubt it. Heat will kill bacteria and viruses, but tannins are a chemical...strong enough and it can "tan" leather. And they're found in a lotta plants. Cooking those babies would've probably caused them to have a bitter taste, maybe too bitter to tolerate, but IDK and I'm not sure what you could presoak them in to draw it out. He got off a lot better than the time he ate improperly cooked turtle meat in GA and got that parasite though. Black tea has a lot of tannins which is why I mentioned it. Gotta be careful with oysters they're filter feeders. I'm part Cajun and I cook Creole food too so I'm picky about shellfish😂

@@tikkidaddy you MIGHT be able to boil them and get the tannins to leech out.. but would probably take at least 2-3 bookings to do it and I don't know for sure it would work... acorns I know you can put in a mesh bag and float in a stream for a few days to get the tannins out... never had to do it to oysters...

I watched one episode of this show on plane and I am glad I found the rest on youtube, I love this . I hiked the PCT trail and learned alot about survival there
