Les’s director’s commentaries are hands down my favourite content. Anywhere. He’s so engaged and keeps making them better, longer, more interactive. Is there another TV series that has done more complete ‘behind the scenes’ or director’s commentaries? Maybe podcasts (How I Met Your Mother, etc.) but probably not what Les is doing. He’s leading the way again and Wouldn’t be surprised to see more shows try it. Then again, hard to get 100% of the cast involved. Easier when Les IS the cast. And director. And producer, etc.

Bringing Bob in for some episodes every now and then are great. He adds a comedic undertone to your series and I'm always looking forward to more Bushman Bob stuff. :D My family has a cottage on the Ontario Peninsula and we go for frequent walks through the bush, there's some pretty thick areas. It would be neat to see you try and survive up there. It's a beautiful land.

My favorite part of the scene with Bob delivering the last line about geese is this. The part where Les says, "Ok, ..." and then is about to turn to Bob, just focus on looking at Bob. You will see, Bob, VERY slowly, turn his head in a "what the hell are on on about" type way. It cracked me up the first time I saw it, and it STILL cracks me up now.

You mention the relief of having a second "character" with you when filming one of these shows. People who haven't worked a film production wouldn't believe how much work it is just to get 10 minutes of usable material.. I would estimate you work roughly an entire day for every 10 minutes of content. I don't doubt you could spend 7 whole days surviving and filming, yet still be concerned you don't have enough for a full 50 minutes episode.

I like these old shows with your commentary. I've been lost in the bush. I went pig shooting once with a couple of older blokes. They pointed me in one direction to go, while they travelled together in the opposite. Firing off three shots when lost, the other two just thought I'd gotten onto some pigs. We were in deep rain-forest in the tropics and I couldn't determine how to turn back west, the light wasn't getting through the canopy, so I couldn’t determine the direction. At the time, I thought a stick in the ground would give me a hint or the sun in the east, but no. I bought a compass afterwards, I bought a lot of things afterwards. After 3 times of trying to head west, and ending up at the same rotted out tree, I gave up. It was as if something didn't want me going that way, like a wall. I had no problem going east, though. No tech back then to follow my path back. No garmins or mobile/cell phones, not that there would have been any signal to use one, this was remote. So, I went east, after finding the creek and then crossing 3 or more croc-slides and hearing the baby crocs in the creek, I decided to head north. I had numerous run-ins with them fishing, not fun. I knew there was a road that way. So glad I’d looked at a very basic map before going. I ran out of water and had to drink muddy water out of a muddy hole the cattle where drinking from. I'm glad it didn't make me sick. There was a big search party out to try to find me. The aboriginal trackers couldn't find a trace of me... also odd. Best trackers in the world. I made it out to the road and got a lift into town, from a passing ute (truck?) full of other aboriginals... their reserve and town was at the other end of that road. I had a lot of native mates. I lived and a big fresh seafood party for everyone that had looked for me when all the lookers made it back to town that evening. A hell of a day. It took me hours to escape the rain-forest and cross that cattle paddock. I'm just glad I didn't step on a taipan, they were a common sight to see. Another story though. I had some close calls on a prospecting trip. There's something repellent about that tv and movie business. Your show, The Last Alaskans, and Alone, seemed the most real, though the editing on the last sucks somewhat, or so I’ve heard from those with YT channels. That was good publicity for the cops up there. They did a wonderful job. When I was in the rain-forest, it would have never been possible for me to be found by air, not in the remote place I was, if they’d have even bothered, at that time in the early 80s. I’d become a lot more conscious, after that adventure, as I called it at the time, of safety and carrying essential tools for survival. Kindest regards.

In the spring, here in Pennsylvania, the fiddleheads, morels and wild ramps are all available just about the time that trout season starts. I learned from my grandpa at 6 yrs old. We'd take just enough native brookies for us and my grandma, and she would have venison steak thawed, and she'd make venison steak with morels, fried trout, fried potatoes with wild ramps and steamed fiddleheads with homemade butter and, sometimes a few wild ramps, but not enough to overpower the delicate fiddleheads. A meal fit for a king, and I did the same thing with my son, and, I'm expecting my first grandchild, a grandson, in late winter. That cycle will be repeated in 5 or 6 years!!

Love all your commentaries Les! Hearing the production and videography that has to be done and the challenges while doing tolling work on real survival shows how much more work you had to put in. Bob is great he has such good energy. Those KZbin shorts with him are hilarious he is such a comedian. I've been itching to get out in the wilderness again especially this fall in Oregon, the wild harvest is real and I love coming home with rare ingredients you can't get in the grocery store or restaurants. I have a chef friend that is surprised the kinds of fish we bring back that they can't get their hands on in the kitchen and are highly sought after. Hopefully when it gets more wet the mushroom season will be bountiful this year. Last year we got several top grade Matsutake deeeeeep in the bush and it can get scary when you are looking down too long and look up and everything looks the same. I always keep every little thing I've learned from you mindful when I step out to make sure we can avoid a bad situation so I don't have to apply unneeded survival techniques. Can't wait for the next director's commentary. Honestly one of the only KZbin content I crave.

I was also surprised that you didn’t point out the fact that it was a Spruce Grouse, and not a Ruffed Grouse. For anyone reading this that doesn’t know, it is called a “Ruffed Grouse” and not a “Ruffled Grouse”. They are also known as the “King of Gamebirds” by many hunters and publications. They are awesome! Great episode!
