I've never really been able to agree with this statement "you can choose to be a victim or you can be a survivor, I choose to be a survivor" I think that's what most of us would choose.

The statement does not refer to choosing to survive; it means you choose the identity you want to have after being fortunate enough to make it out of the situation. If you choose to identify as the victim, then you victimize yourself and give power to your perpetrator to continue to define you by their actions. When you choose to identify yourself as a survivor, then you empower yourself to reclaim your identity because you not only survived the trauma, but you are also a survivor of the aftereffects and life going forward.

"Most, yes, but not all." Lookup the story of the German cannibal from maybe about 20 years ago. He posted on a website that he wanted to kill *AND EAT* someone, and (of course) he had someone reply that wanted to participate and be the victim. Obviously, it's a very gruesome story. The hungry man was named 'Armin Meiwes,' and there's many stories about him, as you'd probably guess. Meiwes' next door neighbor described him as the perfect neighbor that mowed their lawn, repaired their car, and even had them over for dinner. They weren't dinner, however.

I can’t imagine being put in a position where a serial killer snatched me, or broke in my home. I don’t own a gun but I believe it’s time because this world is a scary place, esp now.

I want to compliment the editor of the people magazine.. thank you for your genuinely kind and thoughtful words for the families of the victims, the victims, survivors, and even police. I really loved how "real" you are. I loved how you weren't staring at the camera and reading off a script. I could tell you were digging Into your memory for these stories. So often these true crime story tellers just tell these stories for views and subscribers and lack genuine care for the people they are talking about. . I believe you really connected with each case you've published in People magazine. Thank you for coming on the show.

Hi Ana - I love that Alicia was on the podcast today. There are so many serial killers that we don’t know about. The survivors are so brave to go to Police to then not be believed. It is infuriating! Thank goodness these survivors spoke up though. I applaud the survivors and mourn for the victims that didn’t survive. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Ana! Highly recommend speeding up the video. I watch all of them 2x faster, because I can't focus - most of the people talk too slowly for me. And English isn't even my first language. Also, it's a hard topic, I'm not surprised it's hard to talk about it. Alicia did a great job, I liked her insight a lot.

Another thing that made me think what an amazing woman Annette is was that she was only 19 at the time! She was 19 years old and knew how to stroke the ego of a narcissist scumbag!! Now did she learn that from past experiences of trauma or she just let her instincts kick in?? She’s such an inspiration and I WISH I could have just a tiny bit of that strength she had and still has!! I would LOVE to talk to her so much!! All of these women are amazing!! But what got me with Annette was she was only 19!!!! I can’t imagine how scared she must have been but yet calmed herself down to the point where he let her go!!!

She is right. I am very open about being graped as a child. It helped me to get power over the situation and shoe it doesn't define me. I use to have a lot of ptsd over it. Thunder still once I a while if it's unexpected will give me flashbacks and I can't see the first house it happened to me at. That one was for the majority of the time. The second house doesn't affect me nor do I think I could remember which house that was. They only lived there for maybe a year before I told finally. I was 7 when he began touching me. Shortly before I turned 8 is when the grape stared. I told exactly two weeks before my 11th birthday. He got 36 years in prison which was the minimum.

I was molested as a child so I’m a survivor and I know what it’s like to hide a secret then as an adult decide to tell my story and that story not be believed or received by a sympathetic family. So you begin to reach out to others for sympathy and support by telling your story. So what I’m saying is that a survivor may be wanting to tell their story as a way to heal wounds that may never be healed.

At least 90% of the time when a person survives a murder attempt, it's got nothing to do with that person's will to live or ability to fight. For the vast majority of cases, these people survive because their would-be killer failed to seal the deal (i.e. bullets or blades that miss vital organs, strangulation or drowning attempts that don't last long enough, etc). And for some of them, they survive despite receiving fatal injuries and I consider those cases to be modern day miracles. But whether it's due to a killer's failure or divine intervention, the victim had no control over whether they survived or not. By claiming otherwise, you're insulting all of those who didn't survive. You're indirectly saying that murder victims die because they don't have the will to live... which is absolutely ludicrous and totally false.
