Talk Overview:
Proteins are complex structures folded from a linear strand of amino acids. These structures are involved in almost every process in the cell. In this iBiology talk, Susan Lindquist talks about the incredible diversity of protein structures, the importance of proper protein folding, and the problems that arise when proteins are misfolded.
Speaker Biography:
Susan Lindquist is a member and former Director of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. She is also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Professor of Biology at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her work on yeast prions and protein chaperones established the molecular basis for protein-based mechanisms of inheritance. More recently she has built tractable genetic models of complex protein misfolding diseases, including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer's and Huntington’s diseases. Dr. Lindquist is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and the Royal Society. She received the 2009 National Medal of Science for her many scientific achievements.

I was going to comment and say thank you Dr. Lindquist for the amazing explanation. Sad to find out that Dr. Lindquist passed away in 2016. A reminder to our short time on this Earth. 2:156.

18:45 Do the Hsp proteins get their name from their position on the gel?
@erinakamiya

Sort of. It's from their size: Hsp40s are around 40 kDa, while Hsp70s are around 70 kDa.

I think synthesis of HSP proteins is a part of the survival response of the cell to stressors

Is there a reason you release all the presentations at once and not single videos/lessons once a week/day/etc.?

Hi! Usually we release a video once/week on one of our channels, but we recently had to reorganize our content across channels and the only way KZbin would let us do this was through re-uploading some content. I'm sorry for any inconvenience it may be causing!
