Susan is no longer with us, but yet she's still here and many people years after appreciate her lectures and her passion for science. We enjoy her voice and the way she simplifies complex knowledge. Thank you, Susan, for being with us, despite leaving.

So sad to learn such a wonderful lady and amazing scientist has passed away. I learned much from you Dr. Lindquist, thank you.

Oh, I just was about writing a comment that pro-bloggers vids are unnecessary loud (my colleagues were watching/listening to something "clubbish") and saw your comment. Speechless and sad.

This makes me confused about what the definition of a prion is? The "Prions are misfolded proteins with the ability to transmit their misfolded shape onto normal variants of the same protein" definition does not seem to be what is used here. Are the HSP:s prions, or what are they, just enzymes?

They are proteins that influence other proteins to change their configuration is what I understood from wikipedia. Enzymes increase the rate of a chemical reaction, but in this case HSP enables and accelerates the change of configuration of a protein configuration into another.

I think the issue is that most definitions describe prions under the lens of their role as a pathogenic agent in prion diseases, and so that definition of “misfolded proteins with the ability to transmit their misfolded shape onto normal variants” makes sense so long as you know what the “misfolded” shape is and what the “normal” variant is. This lecture looks at prions under a slightly different lens and that is their potential role as a mechanism of cytoplasmic inheritance. Her portrayal does not refer to normal and pathogenic states but rather to a phenotypically different states so it’s more in the realm of evolutionary biology than infectious disease research. And i think HSPs can be called enzymes. I don’t know much about them, other than that they serve various roles to help a cell adapt to heat stress
