All proceeds will be donated to The Haven to support women and children experiencing domestic abuse.
From social isolation to juggling childcare and home working, lockdown has meant challenges for everyone across the country. But for some, staying at home means living in constant fear of abuse. For people in abusive relationships, lockdown is not just terrifying, it can be life threatening. Figures indicate that, across the UK, 16 women and children were killed in suspected domestic abuse killings in their homes during the first three weeks of lockdown alone; more than double the average and the largest number of killings in a three-week period for a decade.
Multistory has joined with The Haven to help raise vital funds so they can continue their vital work and offer support to more women and children. They have seen a 60% increase in visits to their website during the first few weeks of lockdown and West Midlands police made over 400 arrests on domestic abuse related incidents in the first two weeks alone
In 2017, Multistory and Magnum photographer, Susan Meisleas, collaborated with women at The Haven to produce A Room of Their Own, a book that shares stories of women’s experiences of domestic abuse.
They have come together again to support The Haven to raise funds for their urgent appeal by launching a (time) limited-edition print sale of Susan’s images.
A choice of three prints will be available to purchase for one month only during June 2020, via www.multistory.org.uk/shop
Each 10 x 8 inch print will be printed on semi-gloss paper and sold for £100 inclusive of VAT (plus the cost of postage and packing). Shipping will be processed at the end of July. All prints will be unsigned as a ‘time-frame’ edition limited by the duration of the fundraising period.
The first 50 buyers will also receive a copy of the book, A Room of Their Own.
100% of the net profit will go to The Haven.
The Haven provides shelter to women and children facing domestic abuse - helping them to overcome the effects and, ultimately, move on with their lives. They have had to make changes to make sure that the women and children remain safe, not just from abuse but also from Covid-19.
The Haven’s services rely heavily on funds generated from their (usual) busy calendar of fundraising events, corporate and community fundraising support and sponsored events; all of which they have sadly had to cancel for the foreseeable future due to Covid-19.
This means a significant loss of vital funding needed to ensure that services, such as their 24-hour helpline and their live chat facility, can continue to support women and their children at a time when they need it the most.
