In The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, Susan Pevensie throws an arrow to defeat an enemy. I thought I'd test it in real life.

Its simply a matter of fantasy filling. where general viewership wants to see the role by what it mainly is you see an Archer you want it to do Archery in some animations and even in Avengers 1 with Hawkeye (after he runs out of arrows), there's cases where they'll make the bow also be armored so that it can be used melee wise but always keep the usage of the bow/arrow at all times Its just common trope Viewers tend to eat because average viewers dont really consider that a character, save for sword wielders or an inherently dual wielder; would be wielding secondary weaponry and movies adapt to that public view so Fantasy stays by what it is: a fantasy

The Romans used hand thrown plumbata, which were roughly the size of lawn darts, but they added lead weights to give them enough heft for a useful terminal effect. I interpret the movie scene as showing not only the enchantment on the Santa gifted gear, but hinting at the superhuman power that the Pevenseys would come to wield as they grew into their roles as Kings & Queens. In some of the later books they pull off some pretty crazy stuff, well into superhero/demigod/mythic character turf!

Oh that's actually a good point! In the books it's stated that being in Narnia changes the Pevensies. They run faster, can run farther, laugh louder, and just...have more life in them. (In the movies it never explicitly said so I'm not sure if it's a plot point in the movie) It's part of why being back in England is such a shock I would imagine, because they're not only losing their friends/home/leadership roles, but they've also become...something different. Even just a few hours in Narnia can change them. In Prince Caspian, a few nights into their return to Narnia, Peter has the thought that he can run faster and further and with surer footing, far beyond what he could do in a simple footrace in England. That they've traveled so much in the past day and they're only able to do so because they're in Narnia and stronger, while they don't have the capability to travel as far in England

A quick thought, though. Back when I was learning knife throwing I realized that the best approach was to kind of hold it by the middle, with the index and middle finger up on the dull edge. Then, throw and release, allowing the back of the knife to sort of glide under the riff between those two fingers, as to establish balance from the get-go. With arrows it should be easier. I know I might've not made it super clear as I am not a native english speaker, but if you happen to see this reply and want a demo, let me know and I'll upload a video about it and tell you when it's up. @@fow3453Gambesons made from linen stopped even very sharp swords very well (wool isn't as good for it, and cotton too weak and was also very expensive at the time). The structure and the weave of linen distributed the force of a weapon in all directions. A sword, a handheld weapon, didn't have enough power to slice through a gambeson. The heavy war bows were invented to be able to pierce gambesons. So it is the other way round: Arrows were the gambeson-piercing weapon, not swords. (And then full plate armour was invented to counteract the heavy war bows, and then the large cross bows were invented to pierce that armour, and so on and so forth).

I thought that was just another TV show gimmick thing. XD Throwing a knife without spin seems like it would not have much force either. On a spin throw even if the blade end doesnt stick, its still a metal object thrown with serious force, and could still hurt, or hinder depending where it hits. Of course again… like here shown, if a target has on any bit of armor leather lets say for fantasy… or a gambeson… it wont do much, even with the blade most likely.

@@XFizzlepop-Berrytwist Please note that I'm just a person playing with sharp bits of metal not an expert in any way shape or form. It doesn't seem like it would have much force at all, you're right. It's really hard to explain but the easiest way to put it is that the knife is flying with all the centrifugal force of the thrower's arm rather than the force of the knife flipping over itself. On that note, throughout my couple months of playing with different knives I've found that I actually get more force from no spin, but that might just be me. You can look up the videos of (I think) Aaron Judge if you'd like to see a world champion in action! XD Hope this helps!

In shurikenjutsu there is a metal spike like dart that is thrown as an overhand pitch. Ideally you'd fit the butt of the dart in your palm, folding your palm in to cradle it (just reach your thumb toward the base of the pinky,) and rest the shaft between your middle and ring fingers. It has a "slinging" sensation when done right. But again, these are metal darts, not longer wooden arrows.

Can I offer a suggestion? The concept is not half bad. There is a device that archers used back then to throw an arrow by hand, rather than launch it from a bow. It was a long, fairly thin piece of wood, with a divot carved into the wood, where the flight of the arrow would get put. Then, using the piece of wood, they would swing their arm forward, effectively providing a longer arm for throwing the arrow. It’s kind of similar to that plastic scooper arm toy that dog owners buy for throwing tennis balls. If you held the arrow by the back end of the flight, you might be able to make the concept work!! 😊

You could try a technique known as a no-spin, or quarter spin throw in knife throwing. You palm the handle of the knife with your pointer or middle finger down the side of the handle and as you throw you push against the knife with your finger and stabilize the spin. It can still over and underspin, but it's a lot more consistent than just lobbing a knife. You change the amount of force you use to push against the knife with your finger to adjust for length of the knife and distance to the target. Arrows are quite a bit lighter than knives so I don't think you are ever going to get it to be as effective, but may be worth a shot. Heavy throwing knives stick alot easier and hit a lot harder.
@TheLightningNinja97
@TheLightningNinja97 Жыл бұрын
Hey just an idea, what if you tried throwing the arrow using a no-spin knife throwing technique. Grip the shaft (point facing target) with a loose palm grip and your index finger extended with the tip of it just after the balancing point of the arrow. Then when you throw it, release the palm grip and let the length of the shaft slide along your finger (basically guiding the arrow) and break contact with the arrow just before your finger touches the flights. This technique helps me in throwing a knife with no spin so I thought it might work with an arrow too (I don't have arrows so I can't test it myself). Also, just so you know, the throw won't have a lot of power in it but hopefully enough.

You can throw them like the "nospin" knife technique. Hold them a bit father up the shaft, use the side swing technique and use your finger to slide down the shaft, canceling the tumble of the arrow, while still keeping the momentum of the side swing technique. I'm not saying it's more powerful than a bow shot, but it's definitely better than just throwing it like a club.

The reason why Susan decided in the end that Narnia wasn't real and all of her experiences there was just playing with her siblings in their childhood is she remembered this moment and went "Naaah, that couldn't have actually happened, it's far too silly!"

It seems she holds it a bit higher than the end… which may b closer to its equilibrium, it may b similar to a no spin technique which is thrown a bit different than the other methods you tried, it is also more powerful, but with a longer and lighter mass per inch I still doubt it will have as much force as a smaller object meant for no spin… so it’s still not practical

I feel it’s more about technique. Knife throwing for example. You have to hold the knife in a very specific way and allow your finger to run the spine of the blade after release to stop it from continuing to rotate in the air. Takes a lot of practice and even more to get any meaningful power behind it…. Without it spinning in the air.

Try using a small atlatl to simulat the extra leverage, as that mimics the enchantment and the throw. My experience throwing arrows with a makeshift atlatl is that they are pretty damn powerful.

So powerful in fact that I ended up breaking the arrow or the atlatl if I messed up because of the force of the launch.

You gotta use centrifugal force and let it slide out of your hand while having your hand guide the arrow to its target.

I seriously want to know the science behind why the individual “javelin thrown” arrows don’t penetrate the shirt but 1 or 2 did when the whole quiver was thrown. Like, whaaaat?
@blumineck
@blumineck Жыл бұрын
I'd guess it's one (or both) of 2 things: 1- it's actually quite hard to put your full weight behind a throw if the thing you're holding is very light and narrow, so you can actually throw the bunch a lot harder. 2- the odds of penetrating the shirt were low but not zero. Throw enough arrows and some of them will find a gap in the weave.

The wrench in that scenario is obviously the distance Arrow has no time to gain momentum based on Susans raw arm strength(without the bow compounding the force)

you could try putting a finger or two behind the nock and have the arrow resting on the palm and use the downward twist of your wrist to add a little more force, but probably won’t do much

You didn’t mention it but I’m sure you noticed: when you threw the whole quiver at once, one arrow did actually stick through the wool shirt, probably not enough to change the “non-lethal” part, but I imagine they’d want to get it looked at sooner rather than later if they could, and it might hamper their ability to pursue you even if their will to try is still strong.

Other factors may be at play to make it impossible but distance is a factor when it comes to rotation I know knife throwers often stand at fixed locations when the throw because they know how many rotations their knives will travel during a rotation and usually place themselves about the distance it would take for their knives to rotate enough to stick into a target. It looks like she was 10 to 15 ft away in the clip.
