Hi Susan. I’m very new to gel printing and didn’t even know what rice paper was when I purchased a great deal of it off of TEMU because the price was very good and shipping fees charged by Amazon are prohibitive to the Caribbean. Prior to this purchase, I had only used copy paper and tissue paper. I had terrible problems using rice paper & I was very discouraged, but in the long run my experience was (and this might be true for each individual rice paper) the amount of paint and the time to fully dry it seem to be the critical points. I used a hairdryer on COOL and I got to know how much paint the paper wanted to work with in general and I’ve had great success ever since. If I’d stopped, after my first experience, I would’ve missed out on a great deal. I just wanted to share that. I love watching your videos. I always learn so much. ❤️🙏❤️

I, too, use the Sketch 9” x 12” Yasutomo rice paper and it collages beautifully.

Hi Susan … Thank you for doing this. I agree completely with your thoughts on the first rice paper … it falls apart so easily. The only way I have found to use it is do the layering on the paper instead of the gel plate … do first pull with a background color, then do a stencil on gel plate and do a quick pull on dried print. At least this works so it’s not a total waste. Thanks again!

Yes. I did that recently. It's still tore a little on the edges. But not huge tears.

Try the 9 x 12 Yasatomo on the SMOOTH side only-the results are amazing!

Yes. I would use the smooth side. I can't wait to try it because right now I only have what I showed in this video and it's frustrating to work. Although most of them can still be used in a collage since I cut them up.

Hi Susan, great video! I was thinking about doing this myself as I get SO many requests about the paper I am using. We disagree on the JapanBargain Calligraphy Rice Paper though, it is my FAVORITE paper both to print on and to collage with! Just goes to show you, it is artist's preference!

Hi Vikki, I watch your channel as well. I tried that paper again a few days ago and it still tore on every print. Maybe it's the paint I'm using. I haven't tried collaging with the thinner paper. I might love it.

After watching your video, I suddenly had a wave of self doubt and worried that I have been misleading people, and yet I know what my experience is. Again, I think it shows there are really endless ways to create and explore, combined with personal preference. I continue to LOVE the aforementioned paper in my mixed media collage work, as I like the very thin paper best for melting seamlessly into my pieces.

I like the Yatsumoto paper. I’d not heard of the other two.

I found the other two on Amazon and thought I would give them a try. I had purchased the Yatsumoto paper a long time ago and it was still in the bottom of the drawer. I didn't know the 9x12 was different. That's the problem with buying online. You can't touch it and feel it.

Just a note to echo other comments, the 12 x 18 Sketch paper is not the same quality as the 12x9. I use both for completely different applications. If you look carefully at the front cover just above the bar code, the item numbers are different. Different weights of paper.

Great video. Try a strip of packing tape on the gel plate to pick up leftover paint and paper pieces.

For some reason that never works for me. I usually had a layer of opaque paint, and use copy paper to pick up but leave it to dry for 5 minutes. Entire plate comes clean and I can use it for collage paper.

Hi Susan, I'm sorry your favorite paper is not available! My favorite paper for Gelli printing and collage is the JapanBargain rice/ calligraphy paper (the 2nd one you tried) however, you have to let the paint dry completely before pulling the print. If you do that, the print will pull perfectly. It takes extra time but will collage beautifully. Best of luck on your search for the perfect paper!

The paint was dry. I tried again a few days ago and it still tore every time. On the edges mostly. The paper is too thin I think. But I'm still trying to use it, just not in videos. I don't want to waste it.

Thank you for doing this experiment for us. I’m new to art journaling so I’m just starting to buy new supplies to try. I don’t have any rice paper yet so I appreciate knowing which one to get now. Have you tried medical exam paper? It’s similar to tissue paper but I don’t know how it compares to rice paper. I bought a roll of it on Amazon but I don’t know if it’s available in flat sheets. So far I’ve used it to paint marks for my pages. It ‘dissolves’ better than tissue, leaving just the marks on the page. I haven’t tried it on my gel press yet. I’m interested in knowing if you’ve used it and what your experience has been with various applications. Thank you!

I'm currently in Physical Therapy and asked them if I can have a big sheet and I tried it. I was ok. I didn't like enough to buy a roll. I was testing transparency and the deli papers works better for that. I may revisit it again. Thanks for the suggestion.

I use the Japanese calligraphy rice paper in the blue package ( the first one you tried), and I never have a problem. I use the flat side not the shiny smooth side..

Recently I used the larger Yasutomo paper with thicker acrylic paints and it stuck to the plate in places and tore apart. I'm assuming that I didn't wait long enough for it to dry completely. I don't seem to have as much problem with it sticking if using the smaller size. However, I have found the Yasutomo to be the best rice paper for Suminagashi marbling technique (printing on paper using inks floating on water). The thinner rice papers will tear easily. It's generally cheaper than Kozo or other thicker marbling papers. Unlike pulling prints on gel plates where you use the smooth side of the paper, you use the rough, more absorbent side on the water.

Very interesting. For gel printing and collage I like the thinner paper but not too thin. The larger Yasutomo is the right weight but it does sometimes leave paper on the plate. The 9x12 paper they have is too thick for collage. In my opinion. But it prints nicely.

If the latter, then there is probably another Amazon seller who has it. It would take $$ and time to find it as there are quite a lot of rice papers on Amazon.

You need to use either wet strength tissue paper or teabag paper, both of which are strong enough for gelli printing

I like the deli paper I use. I have tried the wet strength and it's similar to the deli paper I use but I have to cut it first. So I still like my deli paper.

You will get less sheets if you have a larger size of paper.

I tried it again with single layers and it wasn't quite as bad. Only tore around the edges. When doing multiple layers and a single pull it falls apart. At least for me. I didn't want to waste the paper so I keep trying. 😀

The Yastumo 9 x 12 pad is DIFFERENT than the larger 12 x 18. Elizabeth St Hillare is very clear on this paper & does NOT recommend the larger size. Please do your research before passing along improper information

At the time that I bought that paper it was because of a video I watch of Elizabeth's and in that video it wasn't clear. I then put the paper away and found art advantage and never looked back. I'm sorry if you think I am misleading people. I'm do my best working alone wearing many different hats to get these videos finished and on time.
