Just a note: I have taught for over 20 years and I never taught kids to just memorize their Sight Words. I always taught them to look for the phonics patterns and notice the irregularities. Your strategies are very similar to the way we were taught many years ago - in a successful balanced literacy classroom. Unfortunately, over the years, school systems taught teachers to teach 'programs' instead of the research-proven workshops.

Yes, I also I don't recommend memorizing, most of them do that because they don't letter names.

During a field placement a teacher taught sight words by drilling students everyday with flashcards. They couldn't remember most of them and she told me there was nothing else she could do to teach them. I thought that couldn't be true and I am so glad I found this video! It definitely boosted my confidence and made me excited to teach!

This makes so much sense. As someone who learned a bit of ASL one professor said that at some point we won’t even have to think about what people are fingerspelling because we will memorize the shape that the word makes if that makes sense😅

Thank you for this video. As a mom struggling with sight words the way hes being taught isn't helping him... strongly believe sound and blending helps or "plugging them together" the way you did here especially this past week he did much better since im teaching him the way i want not the way they want 🙏 thank you i now know im doing it right after watching this and have so many more ideas ❤😭

This is interesting that you show them the word first and then have them do the boxes. I have learned to have them hear the phonemes first and you record and show them those unusual spellings for the sounds as they occur. I'll continue to put the phonemic awareness before the written word is presented. Fortunately, even though I taught all through the period of time you mention with the sight word expectations, most teachers figured out that it wasn't just flash and say and had similar approaches to teaching these words. Teachers are always smarter than the current trend/approach because they observe the learners. I adore your fingerlights idea! I hadn't seen that before and hope to add that in with a tutoring student soon. I also LOVE your "What is wrong?" to aid in visual memory. I just found you and hope to follow along and pick up more tips for Title reading and tutoring beginning readers.

I'm not a teacher but I have a first grader who is having a little trouble memorizing sight words long term. He can know them backwards and forwards while we're working on them and using them, but forget some if there's a short period of time that they haven't been the focus. My son has ADHD as well so doing sight words using different activities keeps his attention as well. These are great tips not only for making sight words fun but also to not just use pure memory but to know how to segment the word. Which may be what they do at school but at home we're just told to go over them and have him write them three times. I'm so thankful I found your channel. We just started but I can already see he has a better understanding of what to do if he can't remember a word. He immediately starts to segment the word. Thank you so much!

The grapheme 'nk' is actually two phonemes joined together 'ng + k' /ngk/ = nk. It is really effective to teach 'nk' as one unit for effective reading & spelling. Eg; 'think' should have 3 sounds ' th-i-nk. Otherwise, your explanation is great! Keep it up.

n + k are two distinct sounds. When the letter N is before a K, it sounds like NG as in siNG. Th - i- ng - k. My students understand this concept well and can identify those 4 sounds when pronouncing "think." Same pattern in sink, pink, rink, honk, sank, and uncle -- with the C sounding like K. My teacher helped us notice that we don't say (sin)(k) when pronouncing "sink." The N actually says NG.

Jumping into homeschool is a lot! Being intimidated is understandable. I am in my 5th year of homeschooling and I still get nervous. :) Do you have a community around you to help you with your questions? I have a 5th, 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, and K student. Sight words work for some students, but I tried to teach phonetic awareness first. If you need someone to bounce ideas off of, I'm all ears.

Please teach phonics, not sight words. Learning all letter names, sounds, blends will create a better reader. Sight words make kids glance and guess. They need to know how to decode so when they come across a new word they can figure it out.

Hi, I'm teaching English as a second language to students who don't speak English at all. So I definitely am going to try this. You were right, I was taught the 'old school' way and they did sight words to us just like you said: by memorizing. This video really makes sense because I feel like students would really get the word down by sounding out the letters in a word that's taught to them. So great thank you from Micronesia.

@@lizwalker3148 We turn off all the lights and read a book with our flashlights or finger lights. I purchased finger lights from the Dollar store for my class when we were in person and gave them each one (I collect them after each class but have them sanitize first). I also bring in books for them to read from the library (during Covid) or my own collection (not during Covid). Before Covid they read with a partner; after independently. Virtually we still do it too but it is not as much fun as in person but students still enjoy it. I either have them read in front of the screen silently or put them into a Break Out Rooms with a partner. I also switch things up by starting with my own book which I read in the dark to them with my light. Students read silently or with a partner for about 10 minutes.

I loved teaching my littles the history of the sounds. They had fun with it. Like “said” used to be pronounced just how it is spelled; s-ai-d, the past tense of say, with a long a sound. I found myself often saying “read it the right way” and we would sit properly and say it in a strong English accent. Then we would read it the lazy way “sed” and we would slump over. They thought it was funny. Or we would say two (as spelled) in a French accent, and then as we say it now. I feel telling them the history helped later with spelling. But I probably had more time per kid since I homeschooled.

1. How did I ever learn to read without being taught sight words? Oh that's right, we read & read, & we had lists of spelling words. How many times does a child have to see a word before she begins to recognize it? It seems like you're trying to force a faster learning curve on kids. Make them read; they'll get it. 2. I did like the kinetics. They seem like fun for the kids & might help them visualize the words. The grid will confuse some kids - guaranteed. They will fixate on five letters and four sounds, etc. And their little brains will turn off. 3. Hopefully you don't use words like "phonemes" while you're teaching this. Relevant only for educators, not kiddos. Also, I'm now beginning to understand why some people are now saying English is not a phonetic language & how word pronunciation is changing. Seems we're forgetting letters have sounds (even if a bit flexible). Sorry to sound like a crank. Big proponent of learn by doing here. There is no substitute for actually reading. 😊 Thank you for being a teacher!

The strategies that you shared are very engaging and like you I was also of the perception that sight words could not be decoded. Thank you for the insightful strategies. I also allowed students to clap at different levels while spelling the sight words, eg. clap above the head for tall letters, before them for the short letters and below the knees for the letters that are written below a line, words such as thing.

Well done. Finally a video that approaches the way to teach these "sight" words. This is basically the SYNTHETIC PHONICS METHOD. Not sure why you didn't not mention that.

I teach in second grade and I love the way to press dough. It make children have a real contact with something. It'll be very impressive for them.

I love the idea of the playdough too. I'm wondering how to keep it Covid compliant. Is there a way to sanitize it after using it? It seems like it would be best done in a small group.

I agree with Mary A. In addition, there is no one right way for each child to learn phonics or phonemic awareness. As kids get older, when they have been taught to sound out "sight" words, they start thinking the phonemes are syllables and we now have to correct what they were taught. Finally, the science of reading is the culmination of reading research, not the only way to teach phonics. I appreciate the challenges teachers face in teaching, phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. The International Literacy Association has resources on understanding the science of reading and more. You have some great ideas here-thanks for sharing.

With "said" I never thought to use what you call 'heart word strategy'. I call it elimination because it's a strategy for multiple choice questions. What great mental gymnastics and very scientific way to approach something like language.

I'm soo glad to have found your channel. I'm teaching my daughter sight words and was getting a bit discourage as she would rather sound the phonemes instead of learning them by sight. Watching your video has given me such peace to know, she's actually doing the right thing. I'll incorporate the activities you've suggested to make it more fun for her. Thank you 😊
