Susanna Hoffs and Matthew Sweet sing "A Different Drum"

I was 13 years old in late summer 1967, when I stood 10 feet from totally unknown Linda Ronstadt, as she lip-synched this during the taping of a cheesy little afternoon teen TV dance show called "The Groovy Show". Needless to say, I was smitten forever, and right then I "knew" she would be a huge star [I was right]. Other than Linda, there is nobody I would rather see sing this number than Susanna, thanks for posting it.

I actually got to listen in on a phone conversation between Linda and Susanna. Don't worry I didn't invade anyone's privacy. Its on KZbin. It was wonderful to hear them speak to each other as if no one was listening. Check it out.

That's very cool ... I saw Linda in concert in Nov. 1976. I wasn't 10 feet, be not to far from the stage. Also, the only autograph I have ever gotten is that of Susanna Hoff, on the back of my shirt, had nothing else to write on.

Check out Carrie Underwood's version. I found it on KZbin and I was shocked on how wonderful and authentic it was! Enjoy!

The beauty, the grace, the articulation, the tone, the control, the dexterity, the range, and the RASP of her voice. Such a prime example of musical perfection. I can't say it better; Susanna is tremendously gorgeous, and her voice is her looks' only competition. Top notch performance.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love Susanna Hoffs. But what I love here is the fact that her work with Matthew Sweet is just for the sheer joy of doing good music. She's not looking for chart rankings or record sales. She's just enjoying herself. That's why she sounds so great. According to some, even better than in the 80s. I don't know why, but it makes me happy to see her perform just for the joy it brings her. FYI, she's a '59 Capricorn. We're awsome.

Well what can I say, Susanna that was simply beautiful girl. The understanding that a singer needs to possess with the song that they are singing is fundamental and it is crystal that you have this fine tuned to perfection. The ability to move the listener physically and emotionally is not within everybody's ability, but you possess barrel loads of it. Incidently your songs with the Bangles really had a quality to them nobody else possessed at the time and you will be remembered for that.X

It's beautiful how Susanna no longer worries about those little sexy "slide glances" that she used in the 80s. She just gets inmersed in the song and just enjoys the moment and the interpretation of the music. She no longer is concerned with making something that "sells" but rather something of quality. And that little raspiness that comes out in her voice on some notes sounds so awsome, and sexy. It's something that she's developed as she's grown older. I've always wondered in that alternative universe, what would have happened if the Bangles hadn't broke up in 1989 and had continued a few more years instead of that 10 year hiatus.

Susanna is an amazing singer, but my goal today is watching as many covers of "Different Drum" as I can for a radio program I'm writing and recording. And all I have found through this 3-hour research is that Linda Ronstadt was the most natural, sweetest and amazing female singer I think I've ever heard in my life. But that is not to say I don't appreciate Susanna/Bangles. I LOVE The Bangles, but nobody can seem to move me with a version of "Different Drum" like Linda. A strange realization I'm finding today.

Linda was a natural and gifted enough a marvelous voice. Do you know the story of that song? The stone poneys had their own folk version but the studio just wanted Linda sans the band. They made her record the song by herself and right there she realized it was a different version and faster tempo she had rehearsed. Still, she recorded it in just one take not even knowing what was happening. She was that gifted. Now, Susanna Hoffs does a amazing work with this tune. I love all her covers. She just adds something to them.
