I always enjoy watching your informative videos. My peas were started by seed in ground 3/11/21 {zone 5} and sprouted 3/27/21} Now they are about 3 inches tall. I started beets by seed indoors {3/18/221} and now have true leaves and ready to go outside anytime now. Onions are coming up and Potatoes have been in ground since {3/20/21} and I noticed the ground is swelling where the sprouts are about to come up. I haven't planted carrot seeds yet because we had rain for the past 2 days and I can't get into the garden. I'm grateful for your tips on the carrots. I'm gonna try it. Definitely going to put row covers over the beets and spinach, thanks to your recommendations. Keep the videos coming. Can't wait to see how everything to going.

Hi Susan, great information as usual. I normally plant radishes with my carrot seeds, it breaks the ground for the carrots to push through that crust. Great info for the chard and beets, I plan to grow both this year so good to know about the. fly pests. Can't wait to get your book in the mail, anxiously awaiting.. Zone 3 Alberta Canada

Hello. I am in zone 5b. Most of Spokane is in USDA hardiness zone 6 but we are in a microclimate. I'm not sure which covers you are referring to? Do you mean the cover over the lettuce bed? If so, that is in my new book, The Vegetable Garden Pest Handbook.

Cylindrical are my favorite beets too. Trying a few varieties this year in addition to them. The leaf miners always get to my Beets but they leave my chard alone!?

Sure. All of the parts came from Dripworks.com. It's always a good idea to visit your local sprinkler supply store to see what they have, too.

Susan, what do you do with all of your crops? aside from storing for your household, do you sell them at market, donate them at a food pantry?

Hi there. We eat, can, freeze, store and preserve the majority of what we grow. The rest is donated to our local food bank or shared with friends and neighbors.

In some of your other videos I've heard you say to add 1-2" of compost to the top of your beds as an amendment. Is this something you've already done to the beds you planted in this video?

Yes, I'm sorry I didn't clarify that. I added compost to everything but the carrot bed, where I only added bonemeal.

What would cause seedling onions from not standing up as they grow. Mine seem to be falling over.

Hi, Yvonne. That's odd. Are the seedlings really young and are the tips of the seedlings still in the seed-starting soil (or garden soil)? Sometimes the tips need a little help freeing themselves from the soil. However, if that's not the cause, you might just need to firm up the soil around the base of the seedlings and water them in well.

My shallots aren’t coming up. Zone 5b, Southern Tier, NY. Is it still early, or did I buy duds? They were firm and looked healthy when planted last fall.

Hmm, sometimes they are slow to come up. Perhaps you could carefully do a little digging in the area to see if anything has sprouted.

Yes. I dug down. They are growing - slowly. I planted them deep, like the instructions from Fruition Seeds recommended. Another 2” before they surface. How deep do you plant shallots, Susan?

Hi there. I have heard that carrot seedlings don't transplant well because it damages their root tips, which prevents the roots from developing. My advice would be to handle them very carefully, with minimal disturbance and hope for the best!
