Loved the video format. One tip I have discovered for covering a small seed starting tray for germination is using disposable, plastic shower caps. The elastic is helpful to keep cover in place till the seeds germinate. Side note: these caps also work great for covering bowls of bread dough for proofing. Thanks for the video!

great video. in a still picture of your raised beds before planting time I noticed you had your beds covered. was it covered with leaves? grass clippings? do you remove this in the spring or mix it into the soil? making raised beds this year and I was curious. thank you
@SusansInTheGarden3 күн бұрын
Hi, Rose. The bed in the foreground was planted with garlic and shallots, so it was covered with a thick layer of grass clippings and shredded leaves to prevent frost-heaving during the winter months. The other beds just have a bit of garden debris on them, from the previous growing season. With regards to the grass clippings on the garlic bed, we do push it aside a bit in the spring so the emerging garlic and shallot plants can easily grow (grass clippings tend to form a mat over the winter). But for the rest of the beds, as long as the garden debris isn't too "chunky," we'll just incorporate into the soil while preparing the beds in spring. We always add compost to the beds as well. When I chose the photo for this video, I was looking for something "frosty" in the garden, since I was talking about last frosts at that point. I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Great tips! I like the one about the boot trays being used as the drip trays for your seedling pots. One other thing is that people often buy 'top soil' because it is cheaper but the caution I heard in a master gardener class is it is not often checked and regulated so you might get some poor quality soil that contains weed seeds, construction debris and possibly some toxic materials too.
@SusansInTheGarden3 күн бұрын
I agree, Joyce. Seed-starting mix is the preferred method, although I realize some folks might not have easy access to it.

Clear and concise….i have used vermiculite to deter damping off on seedlings. Is this about the same as what you use?
@SusansInTheGarden3 күн бұрын
No, that is something completely different. The product I was referring to is finely milled sphagnum moss. Vermiculite will help keep the seedling stems dry, which is helpful. It can contain asbestos (not always, though), so I haven't used it for years.
@Don-ju9zv3 күн бұрын

How long are your black pvc pipes?
@SusansInTheGarden5 күн бұрын
Hi, Michele. They are about 72" long. The length of PVC will depend upon the width of your planting bed and how high you want them. Broccoli plants gets pretty tall, so this size works great.

Hi Susan, here’s another little tip with growing corn seed because I also do it myself in Maine. I use 5 ounce paper cups with holes in the bottom to grow my seeds in. Once this plant is about 5 to 6 inches tall I plant them outside and am able to rip the cup off to disturb the plant less when transplanting. I have had good luck with this if the seed has germinated. What do you think of this idea? Have you tried it?
@SusansInTheGarden6 күн бұрын
Hi, Michele. That sounds like a great idea. Thank you for sharing it. I've never had any problems with the seedlings after transplanting them into the garden, but your method is definitely an option. We start 72 corn seedlings each year (sometimes more), so I'd hate to go through that many cups!

I’ve been winter sowing for a few years but for some reason I’m not out there yet….i did very well with alyssum, echinacea, artichokes. I was thinking of putting my alyssum in a cell pack inside the milk jug so when the time comes it’s easier to transplant since the plants are so tiny. I loved the tip of sticking a small piece of tape on first and then wrapping it. We heat with wood so we always have distilled water jugs from using our humidifiers and I never thought of recycling them from year to year. 🤔 Thanks

I'm trying my hand at winter sowing in plastic totes this year. I got a three pack from Costco and have heard good things from others about this method. (Easier to open and close when we're in the warm during day, freeze at night phase and also easier to move them all at once). Still need to drill the holes, which will hopefully happen by this weekend. In one tote I'm using 5ish inch nursery pots and in another the 4" tall 4x4 seed starting cells from epic. I've heard the tote method can dry out more than the milk jugs. In the Portland area, this is likely less of an issue, but I will try placing a layer of soil in the bottom of the tote as an added layer for moisture retention and see how that goes this year. 🤞🎉🌱

Hi there. Yes, it's a heated birdbath that we originally got from Gardener's Supply (gardeners.com). However, we mounted it on a sturdier base, so it's not 100% from them. But yes, our bird friends really appreciate it, plus it's important for birds to be able to drink and bathe year-round.

I’m winter sowing right in the garden this year. I thought back of when I saved rutabaga seeds and some self seeded. Those transplants were the best and produced massive roots. I will use the top off some saved containers from last year to cover the seeds. If this works it will save a lot of fussing and no need to buy soil. Anything to keep the mess outside 😅. I seem to have one too many overwintering plants along with some houseplants and then I started indoor greens and Orange Hats. Lol, I need room for alliums next-it’s getting crowded. Glad to see you tried strawflower as I am fairly new to them. I see you have snow-ours went Way south this year and we just got a dusting-but we definitely got a few days of polar blast 🥶. Thanks Susan!

Could you use this same technique, say late April, to plant tomatoes and maybe peppers and eggplant? Basically stagger your ‘winter planting’ like you would your spring planting. If anyone has any experience with this it would be interesting to hear. Take care all!
@SusansInTheGarden10 күн бұрын
Good morning. I know some folks do this but I would rather baby them by starting them indoors so they're in perfect shape to grow, once the danger of frost has passed. This also depends on how cold your winters get.

I’ve started tomatoes this way, very successfully, in zone 6B, sowing in February. I’ve never tried eggplant. The tomatoes plants were strong and healthy and did not dampen-off. Also, there were no issues with knowing when to set them out, etc. They just perked along in their milk jug. Give it a try.

I saw in GardenNinja’s YT channel that using bamboo for the solitary bees result in too large tubes. Apparently 6-10mm in circumference works for him (he’s in UK) Then 100mm in depth. Then clean them out every spring after the bees lay and young fly off. Your mileage may vary (I’m not familiar with Mason Bees).

And that is great. I believe I said that if a person was having problems with corn germination, that provides added "insurance" that they'll get a great germination rate.
