Sphinxes are creatures of the threshold, not only in Ancient Egypt but in Greece and in Asia. Crouched outside temples, they guard gateways between inner and outer. Human-headed and animal-bodied. Female here, male there. Alternately placid and wrathful, like Susheela’s character here as Sphinx, visiting the kind of midnight conversation with your conscience that can catch up with you anytime, anywhere. Kindly summarise your conundrum; everything we do and say and think matters so much while, in the cosmic scheme of things, just a little dust remains
The action flickers like a fever dream between a Java of volcanoes and gongs, layered in light, where cast metal resonates in golden ears and Gondrong Gunarto's gamelan ghosts gather, and a twilight England of Samuel Mills's riddled and raging guitars and the hovering eminence of Charles Hayward (once of legendary band This Heat) who drums and sings.
The music builds from a strangely harmonised blues riff passed through the parallel harmonic imagination of the gamelan, showcasing the peculiar hybridity of the whole adventure. A kind of Sphinx’s riddle with no answer but the silence at the end of song
LYRICS
Reluctantly I took the call
Knowing it was from the Sphinx
Sphinx said: Its not me who knows it all,
But I have had pause to think
I’ve seen kingdoms rise and empires fall
Some stand tall while others shrink
Power power everywhere
Not a single drop to drink
In the desert that’s no joke
It's thirsty work beguiling folk
while madmen hover at the brink....
We romanced when we were young
In my feline innocence
Curious sins whose price has been
To become your conscience
Milk you spilt has turned quite sour
All actions have their consequence
Years peel off or add a layer
Memories are the fists they clench
Dear Sphinx please be succinct,
The days are short,
I’ve chores to run
I’m happy that you thought to call
Sorry to be humdrum
Kindly summarise your conundrum
Easy truth is not my thing
I would rather play the riddle game:
How come you bums who sing and strum
Always seem to sound the same?
The scenes I’ve seen and words I’ve heard
Swallowed in this sea of sand...
Of papyrus script and mobile phones,
Truth and lies and flesh and bones
Just a little dust remains.
Just a little dust remains
The caravans pass, the action fades
To the silence
At the end of songs
