I’ve always enjoyed watching the Graham Horton Show. It’s a very different style from the American talk shows. As a Chinese living in Canada for over fifteen years I don’t actually “deep” listen to English words anymore. This video is actually helpful in improving my English because the dialogues are translated sentence by sentence and explained in the cultural context. What a treat to see so many of my favourite British actors on the same couch!
I had a general course "British history and culture" during my bachelor, the tutor said "British humour is the true humor, you have to think to get the point". I pretty agree to that, getting puns is interesting. Background knowledge are required for some clever British jokes.

Your insight and ability to explicitly explain something so subtle and hard to get a grasp really impresses me. I recommend this to anyone wanting me know more than just the surface of British culture.

Yes it’s so interesting I want to know more that very great 👍🏻👍🏻
thank you ever so much, Sue, for your interpretation of the English humour in this show. I think you are the first person doing this for Chinese speakers on KZbin. Great job! I love watching British comedies and have watched quite a few. But with Norton's talk show, I don't really get what they laugh at most of the time as I am Chinese and find it hard to follow and catch up with their talk, as well as grasp what they are insinuating because they don't have or give us enough context or background knowledge of that joke. Hope you do more this kind of videos for those who love British humour and are willing to know more about it.
謝謝妳。 好喜歡妳這些以talk show 和British sense of humor 為教材, 幾乎是不知道去拿裡學得到。 Brilliant !

Susie, your sentence-by-sentence explanation is quite helpful to let me understand more about the episode. Pessimistically speaking, unfortunately, this kind of British culture programme is not that easy for those who just learn English by "books" to understand. The only way, as I can just assume, to have more insight into the English humor is to live in UK and switch on TV all the time watching this kind of typical local culture programme. By the way, your mention about Ian McKellen reminds me of another famous gentleman John Vincent Hurt. Both are CBE. My favorite about John V. Hurt is " An English Man in New York". What a beautiful presentation of Sting's song.
囫圇吞棗 - not sure Susie understands such phrase. Not easy even for a Chinese.

听姐姐讲英美文化差异的时候,想起了之前看Ricky Gervais被问到英式幽默和美式幽默的差异时说“In Britain, we love the underdog. We celebrate, laugh, and almost embrace failure”, “I feel that Americans are brought up to believe that they can be the next president of the United States. British are told ‘It won't be you, so don't bother '” 感觉确实是这样哦

我在澳洲待了16年多,真的是到很後期在學英文的時候才聽懂英式幽默的。美式幽默很直接,像是在復仇者聯盟中當Thor說「Is that the best you can do?」

Your precision of word use in Chinese is amazing. I must say some Chinese native speakers don’t use words as accurately as you. Keep up the good work and I wish you success
Wedge is also something which can “insert” between two objects, and make that whole stuffs to fit into right position. I learned this when I worked two some Americans when we were in an engineering project.
The Graham Norton Show is the best talk show ever !!!!! It just like couple of good friends have a nice chat

我一直很想學習瞭解英式口音,也是Graham Norman Show 的忠實觀眾。您做的影片非常有幫助,但是,能不能在開始逐句解釋前,先讓我們聽一整段完整的對話(比如一分鐘的對話),這樣我們可以先自己嘗試去理解,然後再聽您逐句解說,這樣幫助更大。非常感謝😉
@TheBlvision2 жыл бұрын
最有趣的是,和Susie相反,反而山謬傑克森的美式口音我聽得特別清楚。 Punami的笑話好笑! It didn't work, did it? "I'm a celebrity, get me out of here" 我認為笑點在於,語帶雙關阿! 因為沒甚麼好講的,所以尷尬得我想趕緊烙跑!

對,我最欽佩喜愛的英國文化正是你們能夠自嘲的自信。 我們華人的文化就是自卑得不懂得取笑自己。一點善意或無意的取笑,許多華人就會敏感得認為是辱華。這一點真的是不好的文化。 I happened to have watched a few episodes of The Graham Norton’s Show on KZbin, and the funniest is the one he interviewed Mr Bean Rowan Atkinson. Rowan Atkinson by himself was absolutely hilarious with words, without needing Graham to join in to the storytelling.

To understand a joke is not easy at all, sometimes we don't understand the meaning, sometime we understand the meaning but don't know the culture behind, so we don't know what they're laughing for.Your video is really good, you explain it in Mandarin so we can get to understand it much more easily. Thanks a lot! Your Mandarin is excellent!!

Usually when I saw a thumbnail of a non Chinese trying to explain something in Chinese, I just skip and block the guy. But YOU ARE SOMETHING DIFFERENT. 真的非常好👍

I grew up in China, and having lived in America for plenty years, I think they are very careful about joking to the degree that they almost never joke sarcastically. Even when they do, they sometimes add "I'm just kidding" afterwards in case people took them seriously, which ruins the joke anyways. The cultural environment is not very tolerant to any possibility of offending someone. I once made a joke by "talking badly" about a very close friend of mine, and the whole room went silent. But on second thought, perhaps my English wasn't as fluent as I thought. I should try it on the Brits next time.
