I like to learn languages as well and I have the same opinion as you: learning a new language will open a new door to a new culture, new people... Apart from my mother tongue Chinese, I can speak English, French, German, Italian and a little bit Spanish. Among those languages the most difficult one for me is German. When I speak English I think in English. When I speak French I think in French. I don't speak yet well the other three languages, so when I speak I am still in the phase of "translating" from English (or French) to German, for example. My goal is to be able to speak the above 6 languages fluently, one day! 😂

So cool! ich liebe deine Sendungen. Ich bin aus China und arbeite seit 6 Jahren in Deutschland, aktuell bin bei Universitätsklinikum Heidelberg. Sprachen lernen ist immer ein Thema bei mir. Ich habe am Anfang als Kind bis Jugend nur einen chinesischen Dialekt gesprochen in der Heimat bis ich 16 und in die Stadt gekommen war und Mandarin sprechen musste, bis ich 22 war, ist mein Mandarin gut geworden zu’A级乙等‘, ganz weniger Chinesen können das Niveau erreichen. Von 15 bis 25 Jahren habe ich viel Mühe gegeben für English, zwar viel gelesen und gehört, aber zu wenig‘spoken english‘ verwendet und geübt, nach dem Deutsch Lernen ist mein spoken english noch schlechter geworden weil von der Reihenfolge des Satzes bringen diese Geschwister Sprachen (Englisch&Deutsch) mich durcheinander. Trotzdem wiederhole ich Englisch weiter als Alltagsroutine bei Videos oder Bücher lesen oder sowie deine Sendungen anschaue, es gibt’s halt alles auf Englisch, die beste Sprache heutzutage. Zwar ist das Deutsch im Alltag gesprochen aber lerne ich es extra routinemäßig jeden Tag 3 Stunde in den letzten 6 Jahren als feste Aufgabe fürs bessere Einleben. Zum Beispiel das Sprichwort ‚ Treib kein Schabernack ‚! Finde ich so lustig. Seit Jahren wollte ich Französisch lernen für Reisen, Frankreich gibt’s so viel gutes fürs Reisen, aber nach paarmal Ausflügen in Frankreich fand ich es halt blöd dass man kein Französisch kann. Man fühlt sich wie Idioten, schlecht. Es macht mir aber große Motivation Französisch zu beherrschen und seit diesem Sommer bin ich angefangen. Bin ich gespannt was Ich später in Frankreich entdecken kann. Und weil ich die Schweiz oft besuche habe ich auch ein bisschen Mühe gegebenen für Schweiz Deutsch, SRF Sendungen sind top! Nach 2 Jahren Angucken hat es mir schon was Gutes gebracht.also, kurze Zusammenfassung, Sprachen lernen macht Spaß und macht Sinn! Übrigens, diese klassische Frage, in welcher Sprache denken Polyglotten? Das habe ich langsam kapiert, es geht um die Situation was man im Kopf denkt. Wenn man was äußern will oder sich überlegt, kommt die Situation automatisch in den Kopf und dafür kommt auch die angepasste Sprache. Bei meiner Mutter kommt mir Dialekt, bei meinen Kollegen kommt Deutsch, bei anderen Chinesen kommt Mandarin, bei Gym Kerl aus USA kommt Englisch. Ich hoffe dass ich nächstes Jahr deine Heimat besuchen kann.

最近有一個學語言的挫折，叫做優越感，網路上提到的頻率增加了，A是聽說讀寫都使用中文 B是會使用外語的人 A+B可能被當成同一類，但是當a+b混和在一起時，便會有其中一個表現出優越感，無論哪一個，皆是對方的態度讓互相感覺到優越，然後產生不悅，我想優越感並非是一個正面的詞彙，它甚至是負面的，如果一個語言讓別人產生負面感受，對語言本身完全是不利的，就是需要透過轉化，你說的興奮感可以解釋成求知欲嗎? 甚至是擴充腦袋的"認知"，我之前學漢字的時候，寫作文時花了比其他人多的時間完成，不知道這和我以後學漢字不同語系所感到壓力有沒有關聯?學習語言一定需要充分讓腦袋休息，如果我不想學英語就是不想，也不會考慮我必須學英語的理由，等到我想認知英語的某字的時候再來聽。

對跟戴舒萱一樣，以英語等印歐語系的語言為母語的人而言，修習漢語跟漢文，確實殊不容易！漢語族屬於漢藏語系。兩種語系南轅北轍，兼且漢字非由字母組成的拼音文字。修習漢語的語音，尚可透過國際音標或台灣的國語注音或中國大陸的漢語拼音，可是漢字卻傾向以字形代表字義。要掌握漢字的字形、讀音、字義，難度着實頗高。

我覺得學中文比其他語言學習會比較有彈性跟容易，因為中文是一音一意，你只要認識五千個單字就可以真的滿足日常跟校園所需。 但是像西方的語言不是一音一意，英文的單字比較類似中文的詞。 所以中文句子只要五千個字就可以組合句子，但是英文要用60萬英文字(其實它算詞不算字)去組合句子，常常說日常只要兩萬字英文字就可以生活所需，但是事實上根本還是不夠，不像中文就是這5千字的組合。 要是英文可以切開成每個音節都還原出它的原始含義，譬如字首，字根，字尾，每個單獨音節的意義，那他就可以像學習中文一樣簡單，只要了解五千個字節，其他都是這五千字節的排列組合，而不需要學習60萬單字才能算真正掌握英語。

Susie, it's pretty common that others think an individual's personalities change after learned / speaking some new languages. My mother tongue is Mandarin, but I lived in US for around a decade with American English, lived in Hong Kong around another decade with Cantonese (forced by my kids), and now in Singapore with ... Singlish (again forced by my kids) ... My cousins, friends, and ex-colleagues think my personalities getting more exotic / weird.

As someone who was born in Hong Kong (U.K.) and them emigrated to Canada when I was relatively still quite young, I found myself trying to adapt the way that I learned English (and the tiny bits of other European languages) to work backwards to try and pick up more Cantonese, and found that it doesn't work quite the same way.

另外我覺得西方世界會把語言切成不同語族，像中文跟英文就分屬不同語族，但是從我的角度來看，你們會這樣區分是從文字的角度去看才會做這樣的區分，如果從語言本身，而非從文字角度來看，其實語言是沒有語族之分的。 我舉個例子來講好了，我也可以換另一個文字系統來表達中文句子，這樣中文也有時態變化了。 我開車(目前的中文書寫方式)改成wo kaiche. 我正在開車，改成wo zhengzai-kaiche. 我開完車了，改成wo kaiwanche-liao. 中文這樣變成有時態變化了，但是以後在學中文時，本來以前很單純的學習‘’開‘’跟‘’車‘’兩個字，再去學‘’正在‘’跟‘’了‘’就夠用了，現在要學kaiche這個字，以及這個字的各種詞性變化， 如果改成這樣的文字方式，中文本來只要學5千個單音字的排列組合，以後變成跟英文一樣會有60萬個字去排列句子，包含詞性變化。

There is another English learning Channel call Maggie with English in u tube. The channel is hosted by a Hong Kong lady call Maggie. My instinct tells if both channels of yours can combine and become a partnership, it will encourage a lot more audiences ( From the West and the East)to build up with their interest and inspiration in learning with English and Chinese languages both. Your channel definitely is very interesting . What I suggest is just subject to my own opinions. Cause I find you and Maggie both have something in common and I very much believe that you both can come up with sparkle when both of you will host a program together.

For me, it feels like the most prominent difference is that you challenged yourself with the flashcards by trying to put the English words into Chinese (not necessarily direct translation, I supposed), rather than translate Chinese into English. In this way, you train the ability to utilize a foreign language. From our experience, most of us may have done the opposite way by reading the flashcards in English and testing whether we know their meaning correctly. We were programmed by our education system to train ourselves to "understand" English correctly, instead of "utilizing" it naturally. Probably this different language learning style like yours might be a more practical approach to be able to be fluent in a foreign language.

很多87都不知道「文」和「語」的差別：你說的、聽的，叫做「國語」；你寫的、讀的，叫做「中文」。

以前在大陆这点表达很不一样，说的，听的，叫汉语；写的，读的，叫汉字。学校对应学科在中学叫语文，大学叫汉语言文学。

As a native Chinese speaker, First of all, I think your Chinese is great. Secondly, to improve it, I think you need to choose a native accent and try to speak the language with it. Now you make me feel like you are somewhere between no accent, or a standard official accent, and a foreign account. Please don't hate me, It's just some personal silly advice. :)

我認為英語等西方語言，文法太麻煩，就以英語來說，我不明白為何英語文法要有VERB TENSES？ 要知道，VERB TENSES 等文法，令我們中國人學習英語時，吃盡苦頭，因為中文是沒有VERB TENSES 因此，除非是在考試，我平時若要講英語，我會把所有VERB TENSES全部省去，例如： I GO TO HONGKONG YESTERDAY 如果有人話我錯，我會話「犯法呀！警察會拘捕呀！」
