Wow Susie. This is the first clip I’ve seen you do “entirely” in Mandarin and your Chinese is legit to say the least. I had no idea what I’ve been calling “politician’s accent” is “ectually” public school accent. And the humor in your impersonation made it that much more entertaining. Two thumbs up on this one. Fun fact. I had a hard time understanding people in London when I was there in 2019. I told them I could really use subtitles when they were talking to me, and they all rolled their eyes…..
Public schools in the UK are "public" in the sense that any families who could afford the private school fees could send their kids there (among other admission requirements). Government funded schools are generally free of charge but only accept kids coming from the school catchment area and making these schools "non-public". Family with kids moving to a new location tend to pick their residential location based on the availability of reputable schools.
Thank you very much for your detail explanations about public school accent, so very kind of you to do that, I appreciate

我是唱歌剧的,semi-professional 。我的老师以前是混百老汇的。我的口音是被强行纠正成public school accent😂99%的人是听不出来的。剩下1%必需是经过专业训练的人才能听出来。呵呵!一开始真的没想过纠正口音,只是喜欢唱歌而已。结果第一节课就是纠口音,因为我的老师说他无法忍受。口音纠正了6个月以后,他才开始教我唱😂

Interesting discussion. So Hugh Grant was from a private school judging from his accent. I spent almost 10 years in UK and got used to determining stranger's social status from accents while I was there. People would normally select a matching accent depending whom they have a conversation with assuming they have a hometown and education accents, wouldn't they?

Thumbs up first! I think it is very important content for English learners, especially for British English learners. I joined in a British accent community, sometimes I feel that the demonstration contents I need to imitate are often too showy, thus I always think that it isn’t very good for practising pronunciation. Thank you for telling us how posh accents are used in British culture, and we can know Posh accents‘ cultural background in the UK.
This is informative for understanding both the UK culture and the language! Great Job! Hope you cover more topics like this

Incredible Susie, as a Mandarin speaker I am very impressed by your pronunciation. I personally feel that the extremely posh accent is more due to the need for theatrics. As you pointed out, even very posh friends of mine don’t normally sound extravagantly posh. But you do generally have public speakers with those accents.

Very interesting! I thought Public Schools are the opposite of Private Schools.... Thanks for the enlightenment.
是否該解釋一下為何英國的私校叫‘public school’? 原因是從前除了貴族,所有的英國人不論貧富都只有免費的公立學校可讀。後來新的制度允許有非貴族身分可以付錢就讀的私校,稱之為 public paying school (‘public’ 指的是’非貴族的大眾‘),也就是今日的 public school. Perhaps an explanation of the name of ‘public school’ would be useful? That being, in the past, with the exception of the aristocracy, the British people, regardless of their wealth status, went to free state schools. When the new system allowed the opening of private schools for the paying public (i.e., the non-aristocracies) those schools came to be known as ‘public paying schools’, or public schools as we know them today.

We also encounter this kind of 'classified tone' when speaking Cantonese. But, In general, we called it "Lazy Tone'. Since I started studying in early 60s, I was requested having the correct English pronounciation. For example: 'Can't', I was taught to pronounce as the tone of "Count...." not "Can...." . anyway, I prefer 'Count...", I thinks it is more traditional.

public school應該是「公學」才對。(雖說公學也是私校的一種) 台灣僅分公私立,可英國分三種,包含公學、私立學校以及公立學校。 因為我高中曾去英國讀過公學,後來才知道公學與私校還是不太一樣 XD 除了口音差異以外,每所公學都有各自的「新創」單字,還挺有趣的。

Hi Susie I went to St Peter's York when I was 12 and recently switched to Cheltenham Ladies in Southern England. Since I'm originally from Hong Kong and did not speak very much English before I came to the UK, my accent was largely shaped by the North Yorkshire accent prevailed in my school. When I first arrived at Cheltenham people commented on my accent and I persume that might be the “public school accent”🤭
