Wow Susie. This is the first clip I’ve seen you do “entirely” in Mandarin and your Chinese is legit to say the least. I had no idea what I’ve been calling “politician’s accent” is “ectually” public school accent. And the humor in your impersonation made it that much more entertaining. Two thumbs up on this one. Fun fact. I had a hard time understanding people in London when I was there in 2019. I told them I could really use subtitles when they were talking to me, and they all rolled their eyes…..

Public schools in the UK are "public" in the sense that any families who could afford the private school fees could send their kids there (among other admission requirements). Government funded schools are generally free of charge but only accept kids coming from the school catchment area and making these schools "non-public". Family with kids moving to a new location tend to pick their residential location based on the availability of reputable schools.

Perhaps an explanation of the name of ‘public school’ would be useful? That being, in the past, with the exception of the aristocracy, the British people, regardless of their wealth status, went to free state schools. When the new system allowed the opening of private schools for the paying public (i.e., the non-aristocracies) those schools came to be known as ‘public paying schools’, or public schools as we know them today.

一直以為英式發音就是這麼posh , 感覺很有特色 , 最近看了很多民眾前往Westminster Hall 瞻仰女王的影片 , 也覺得英國的屈膝禮好美好優雅 !

Many many years ago I went to England and did A-level in a boarding school in Watford. I didn’t know the differences between British accents when I first got there until I met some English friends outside school, and they really disliked the posh accent and took a mickey out of it 😅

We also encounter this kind of 'classified tone' when speaking Cantonese. But, In general, we called it "Lazy Tone'. Since I started studying in early 60s, I was requested having the correct English pronounciation. For example: 'Can't', I was taught to pronounce as the tone of "Count...." not "Can...." . anyway, I prefer 'Count...", I thinks it is more traditional.

No, it’s different. Public school accent is to distinguish they are much higher class, not due to localization.

Coming from a native speaker of Mandarin; Your Mandarin is very good,I could understand you very well just by listening. You basically got the tones correct, it's clear without the kind of 'foreigners speaking Mandarin' wierd accent.well done! You must have spent enormous efforts in learning Mandarin (it can be very difficult for non-native speakers because it's totally different from other Indo-European or Latin based languages)👏👏👏🙂 你的华语说得非常好,语调基本也都掌握了,没有很重的‘外国人说华语口音’。

不一樣的就是funding,The main difference between public schools and private schools stems from their funding and administration. As the names imply, public schools are administered and funded by the state or national government whereas private schools are funded wholly or partly by students' tuition and administered by a private body.

@@boatie7x 說實話裡面的人差蠻多的。private school出來的人背景比較普通,沒有特別posh的大多都是middle class的。口音也是一般rp南方口音。但如果有人說自己上public school那就基本上暗示他們背景不是很一般,口音也會偏posh。和人打交道的時候問到學經歷的時候, private school 和public school 包含的訊息就非常不一樣

Suzie, try to use the International Phonetic Alphabet to describe the differences between your pronunciation and those of the public schools. You could use either the broad type or the narrow type, or both of the IPA.

"My Fair Lady" was an interesting play about accents and how it influences one's social standing. I studied 2 years in a "grammar school" in Sydney, church run private schools. When I watched Harry Potter movies I felt rather at home with the school's interior scenes, starting from the sandstone buildings.

Hi Susie I went to St Peter's York when I was 12 and recently switched to Cheltenham Ladies in Southern England. Since I'm originally from Hong Kong and did not speak very much English before I came to the UK, my accent was largely shaped by the North Yorkshire accent prevailed in my school. When I first arrived at Cheltenham people commented on my accent and I persume that might be the “public school accent”🤭
