Suspected cerebellar hypoplasia (severe case if so)

This stray kitten came into our hospital at approximately 4 weeks of age with severe intention tremors. This is the kitten 2 weeks later and as you can see, he is demonstrating severe intention tremor activity. These tremors do not occur at rest (at least not as bad) but they do seem to interfere greatly with movement of all kinds, including eating and drinking. The foster mom is hoping that with time and as he matures, he may be able to compensate a bit better than he does now.
We suspect this cat has cerebellar hypoplasia. This is caused by in utero infection with panleukopenia virus. The virus attacks rapidly dividing cells, in this case, the external germinal layer of the cerebellum. The cerebellum doesn't develop normally (i.e. is hypoplastic) by the time the animal is born. A lot of times cats and dogs can lead good lives even with cerebellar hypoplasia, because the rest of their nervous system and body in general, is unaffected by the virus and should be normal. It’s not constant. On their page the cat is fine when it’s walking slowly and sleeping. Also this disorder gets better as they grow. A person I know has a cat who had it this bad as a kitten , the cat is now 6 years old and it’s almost unnoticeable. He says the only time it comes out is during really bad thunderstorms with a lot of lightning and thunder. So to the people saying they should put it down, that is the least of their worries

My cat had the same disorder and she got better growing up, we would stay close to her after every episode and she would slowly recuperate. She's passed away at 17 years old, and had a happy life. Do not give up just because it starts off hard.

I had a kitten with this, but unfortunately he started having bad seizures. After two of them, he couldn't walk anymore at all and was bedridden. My mother and I took care of it constantly day and night for over a year and gave him as much of our love as we could, but he sadly passed away at about 1 and a half years old. My kitten had this and she went through hell. It was mild at first and then rapidly progressed by the time she was 9 months old. It impacted her respiratory system and she struggled to breathe...we had no choice ..we put her to sleep at 10 months old. I was absolutely gutted. It shattered my heart. If it's not treatable, then normally the best thing to do is to put it down. People can hate those words all they want, but in the end, I know I wouldn't want to live through suffering like that myself.

I work in a shelter and unfortunately we get a lot of cats like this. Mostly kittens. Also called wobbly cat syndrome, it usually happens when the mother cat has an infection while pregnant and feeding her kittens. The case can become better over time, but this isn't always true. The best you can do is help them to understand that there is no threat and you want to help. These cats will always have a special place in my heart ❤

My boyfriends parents brought home a little kitten with a cerebral hypoplesia (We think, the vet couldn't confirm but he has the symptoms and behaviours). He couldn't stand at all at first but now he's starting to learn how to walk and help himself (he uses walls to keep balance, for exemple). Still a bit messy when eating but he's making so much progress! He's adorable too. He's a flooffy white kitten with blue eyes.

This breaks my heart. Reminds me of our cat when he was very old. He would get these uncontrollable leg spasms where he would bite himself/anything nearby and pee. He was always exhausted and ashamed after the episode passed. To see a tiny kitten going through the same kinds of episodes and for it to be crying in confusion makes me cry. I hope it gets the best quality care it can.

I don't think they could do much. Literally had a patient that killed himself on accident. He said that he was waiting for one of his attacks to put him to sleep. Was just like that. He smashed his had against the wall and got an irreversible brain damage. He had something like this poor kitten I cannot watch some people suffer from their conditions and not being able to end this. For some illnesses there should really be a law about being able to end it all at will

As someone who has studied this for a hot second, I can confirm this is indeed CH. However, it isn't as bad as you think it is. Because the kitten is so tiny, it's bound to be thrown everywhere because of how light it is. The kitten, at such a young age, may have a hard time moving around because of this. If treated properly and is given the correct attention it needs, the kitty should be able to grow up with an easier life. Obviously the kitten is crying because it's scared. I think you'd be pretty scared, too.

@@Oi_Iggy Unfortunately, you can't find a true treatment. The kitty needs more attention and support than other cats do. When the kitty is under someone's watch, it'll be able to move safely. I've seen many people put landing pads around their house. I've also seen some people put their cat in a wheelchair (animal accessible). It's a lot easier to care for the kitty once it's older, but there are simple coping strategies the kitty can learn at a young age.

My sister's cat had a bad case of cerebellar hypoplasia when he was a baby (not as bad as this, but pretty bad) and my sister gave him super fancy kitten food and worked with him for several hours a day. @@justalex8502 I'm not sure if really REALLY bad cases are untreatable, but my sister's cat, Zen, was a very wobbly kitten, so it's good to always have hope with these cases! There are exercises you can do for dogs or cats with CH. A few exercises you can do for you CH kitten: (my sister did both of these with Zen) 1. Sit the kitten on a small pillow. Put the kitten's legs on either side of the pillow (like how a puma sleeps on a tree branch) such that the belly is flat against the top of the pillow. Their paws should be able to touch the floor. Try to keep the kitten calm with lots of support and words of affirmation-- this will help keep the nerves from overworking. This is for kittens that have a hard time standing up on their own, like the kitty in the video. 2. Take 2 long body pillows and place them parallel to each other a few inches apart. Put the kitten down in the beggining and help them along the narrow paths between the pillows. This is for when they can stand on their legs mostly on their own. I hope this helps someone!! 💜💜💜💜

Sounds like the time the vets told me my kitten would be paralyzed for the rest of his life. He had swimming kitten syndrome, he was dragging himself around by his front paws, his back legs were just spread out behind him. I quickly looked up methods to help him, came across one that sit right in my gut, and tried it. 2 weeks later, no more floppy back legs. He was running around the house and didn’t need his little tape casts I made for his legs anymore. He ended up being the only cat from his litter that is able to JUMP on top of my fucking fridge from the ground. We literally named him Legs. Never give up on your animals, especially when you have a weird feeling they WILL recover. You’ll have a feeling when they won’t be able to.

Since they have bad muscle spasms, their voice is more likely more strained due to them trashing around. It’s normal for cats with this condition. If that kitten was in pain, you would be able to tell because it would be yowling. It’s a awful sound that is very recognizable. Saying they should be put down based just on their meow is fucked up. Unfortunately this case is so severe it can actually cause severe discomfort and even pain. The poor thing must struggle so much to simply eat or drink. There are treatments that you can try, and sometimes they can minimize the severity, but I'm afraid if this case doesn't improve quite a bit.. the best option is euthanasia. The cry the poor thing makes in the clip is one of confusion and fear. I've seen cases like this at the clinic I work at and never one this severe. Sometimes the kindest thing we can do is help them cross over
