TBR - Ep. 006 - Unsprung Hero (Violet Crumbles - Part 5)
In this episode we start out with good intentions of getting a ridiculous amount of work done to our RA23 Toyota Celica "Violet Crumbles" - aspirations are quickly bought down to earth but we still get an amazing amount done and overcome some big hurdles on this old school restomod.

Stumbled upon this series after looking for a First Gen myself, and yeah I'd say you've hit the balance perfectly about being informative and entertaining and everything. Everything's so clear and laid out and even just little bits of things you say here and there are pretty useful as well. (Just simple explanations about how points works, even how to crank a car over just on the starter without it firing up which seems like such a basic thing but i honestly had no idea about it before)

Another top episode mate. For underbody, I used POR-15 on my Silvia when I did the underbody. Brushed on myself, but can be thinned and sprayed. Flashes off to a nice semi-gloss finish that’s pretty hard and relatively easy to clean.

Thanks for the tip - I've picked up some rubberised undercoat already but have been wanting to try something like POR15 or Raptor Liner on the underside of my next project.

FYI, on the back of the backing plate, there is a small wide hole where you can use a flat blade screwdriver to kind of tick back a gear to back off the shoes from the drum, which greatly eases drum removal.

Hey man I've just found this video on reddit and it's great! I really like the fact that you took some time to explain which parts you were going to replace, and getting below the car and showing the steering mechanism gave me a notion of the work that was about to be done. "this is probably more things done wrong than done right" absolutely, but one sure learns a lot more when doing things wrong than doing things right, because we're then obliged to deal with the consequences so cheers to the learning process! Thanks to this video now I know better than using the impact gun when getting out a drum brake 😂 Definitely subscribing, keep it up!

Surprised you didn't try and give the drum a few love taps from the outside to loosen the center? I know they get full of muck inside and always found that helps.
@TheBuildRoom
@TheBuildRoom 3 жыл бұрын
Oh there were plenty of large love taps with a mini sledge but it didn't want to budge. Lots of heat too - i think it took the combination of all the methods. I don't know how people who live in countries with salted roads would even start with cars this old.

Liking this Chanel. I’ve just started a 28. So a lot of what you have done is relevant to me so far. I’m fixing rust first then mechanical just wondering why you went the other way. ? As far as video goes, content and length are good. IMO. Keep up the great work. Just watch out for those USB cables 😀
@TheBuildRoom
@TheBuildRoom 4 жыл бұрын
Great question Owen - the main reason for starting with the mechanical was to stay motivated - its very easy to lose focus on a project when you strip it down to an empty shell and all that's left to do is "everything" this way I have a bite size chunks of work to do but the project always feels viable, even when things get tough. I've been victim of the "too big to finish" demotivation before. Secondly, I'd love to have it running and licensed as a semi rat-rod before I go whole hog repainting as I have lot of other projects I'd like to take some time on also. (I also have two '28s) - doing it this way just keeps things fun and interesting.

@@TheBuildRoom I think you might have hit the nail on the head with “everything left to do”. But Resto vids Like yours go along way to keeping up the motivation. So keep putting them up. There has also been some useful info in there. after my floor pan rust repairs. It will be time to redo all the running gear for me. So looking forward to see how it all goes back together and how the RA40 idler arm fits. Cheers O.

Hi there from Brisbane and subscribed. Just stumbeld on this the other day, great videos. Im currentlly doing up a 1976 TA23 Celica with a 18rg motor and W50 gearbox. Just got to respray the engine bay and put motor back in and suspension etc got all new parts like you too,. Any ideas on what front gas strut cartridges your going to use with your king springs. I know superspares sell monroe and I think Pedders sell them but im struggling to find any other brands. Also is the Ta23 and RA23 celica struts the same.?

I've got an RA20 and the 1st gen Celica steering boxes suck. Surprised you got all those parts. I'd like to know where you got all those suspension parts, I might need to rebuild mine. Surprised to see a Celica with an 18RC, most have been swapped out. I've got an 8RB with an 18R block, so it's 2L with the dual side draft carbs and closed chamber head.
@TheBuildRoom

I got the majority of my parts from SuperSpares, an eBay seller - They sell kits for the RA23 with almost all the parts so it was an easy and cheap(ish) way to do it. Once I have a change to get them in it will be easy to evaluate whether they're a good deal or not!

There are you tubers in the UK if they are watching that would be in awe at the lack of realy badly rusted bolts but it lokked easy except gor one brake drum on another l know why you chose the Celicas to work on is that they look so good and a very sporty looking car also in the North American these Celicas had the 20R engine in them
@TheBuildRoom
@TheBuildRoom Жыл бұрын
Yeah if Toyota had figured out a way to get 18RGs into them all they would probably have locked out a large section of the market. Would have been nice if they'd stolen the Datsun IRS design for it but at least the solid rear design is a decent one.

It's odd to see how they did that front grill. The turn signals are in the bumper, and the clear corner markers don't go the full width of the fender. I guess they call the earlier ones the "slant nose" or flat top because the hood doesn't bulge. I thought the center bulge hood was 1975 and was for the 20R engine, but it looks like that's just a US thing.
@TheBuildRoom
@TheBuildRoom 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah RA20/21 and TA22's all had the flat bonnet and slant nose, TA23, RA23/24/28/29 all have the bulge, there's also a RA25 & TA27 that has a half bulge that extends all the way to the front - its amazing all the cool options that existed in different markets. Always sad to see what the safety bumpers did to the looks of some of the US models though!
