Suspensions Music Theory For Guitar (Sus2 and Sus4 Chords)

Suspensions add interest to your regular chord grips but they have a bigger function when you learn how chords work. In this video I show you how suspended chords in music theory using sus2 and sus4 chords on guitar.

The naming protocol makes total sense as the notes you need are expressed in the chord name. Think of chords as being chemical compounds and it should make more sense. Next weeks lesson will clear up the add chord question. Thanks for watching :)

@@satchrules101 Suspended implies the 3rd is altered (ie like augmented/diminshed means the 5th is altered) so saying sus3 as per your proposal is saying the same thing twice! ;-) Take this with a pinch of salt as there's a risk I'm talking rubbish. lol

That bit at the end is crazy. I have always played with the Am pulling the first and adding the 4th. I had no idea until today I am playing with sus2 and sus4 and resolving back to the Am. I am getting so much out of these lessons, I have played for over 40 years and still learning every day! Thanks for the great lessons, keep that theory coming.

I’m enjoying these lessons thanks Ricky. Love the theory then the practical too. I always think the sus2 and sus4 are used when banging on the same chord for a few bars to add a bit of interest but I guess you have to be aware of which key your in to determine if it’s going to sound okay? Is there any other times you’d use a sus2 or sus4?

I realised I probably have to do a video covering this. There are some pitfalls with sus chords. For instance if it’s chord IV you must play a #4 which sounds quite odd. So a video looking at applying suspensions within the context of key would be useful for you.
