Definitely the argento version. But the 2018 version was surprisingly really great though. Also, the Synapse 4k release of Suspiria 77 is absolutely beautiful and you should definitely get it. lol

I think this is one of the greatest movies of the past 10 years. It commits to a style and a tone, and it doesn't waver. It depicts chaos and insanity with detailed precision. And it makes outstanding use of the period and location. I think it can stand proudly alongside Argento's original; but in execution it was much more similar to "Possession" (1981) -- one of the most overlooked horror-dramas ever made.

You should go over to the RegionFree Season 3 crowd and give them your mind. They refuse to talk about this movie without derision. The host of the channel is a published novelist and yet he prefers the original which has no story compared to the remake which is rich in depth and storytelling.

Super underrated remake! The first watch I had a lot of questions. The second watch answered them for me, then learning Tilda played three roles made it an instant favorite for me. I watched the original many years ago and as much as I appreciate it, I like this remake more.

I'm glad you enjoyed/were moved by this. For my money it's a criminally underrated work of art that is definitely due for reappraisal. It works on a purely narrative level, and its world building is immersive. But its dissection of facets of human psychology, how those aspects then plays into our ideologies, following which how those ideologies can become fanaticism, is inspired. Such a rich thematic experience.

As a fan of the original, I really enjoyed this film. I adore the stylisation of the OG, but this feels more like a fully fledged film if that makes sense.

I remember seeing this in cinemas when it first came out and thinking that the Thom York score didn't quite fit the mood for me. Upon rewatching, I can't imagine anything else in its place. Such a haunting and beautiful film, and a wonderful score that gives it an emotional depth that trancends the screen.

It's so great to see deeper Horror dives here, yeah it was a more mainstream release but it's not the typical film, and the Analysis at the end is so much smarter than I'm used to from places, they really understood quite a lot of this fairly difficult high concept material.
@chriswerth918

One most stunning things about this movie is the nearly perfect pronounciation of the german words, by Tilda Swinton. When you are used to hear german, you will quite easyly recognize if someone, who doesn't speak German, is just recapitulating words. I'm not talking about accents. You would just recognize if the one knows the language , or not. As it is in Tilda's case. She does clearly not understand the language, itself But her pronunciation, the timing and the rhythm of the words are almost perfect. Dispite the fact that she played three different roles in this film - which in itself makes this movie her masterpiece - the time and effort she must have put into her way to speak one of the most difficult languages, is awesum!

Damien Jalet did the dance choreography which was the main element missing from the original 1977 version of Suspiria. I find both films equal in what they present to an audience. One is much more subdued and intellectual approach while the other is a candy coated rock nightmare fable.

I'd argue that this is one of the best remakes ever made based on how singular, but still familiar to the original it is. Plus the cinematography and editing feels so frightening and unique, but still fitting to the tone of the film. And the nightmares renind me of The Ring.

The choreography of Damien Jalet is otherworldly and very disturbing. Every dance I’ve ever seen of his performed makes my skin crawl. He really goes for something ancient and superstitious… violent and abstract. And he and other choreographers like Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker used that floor geometry in their stage performances… This movie came out right as I was getting ready to transition out of a dance company and I was amazed at how the politics of a company reinforced the themes of the film. Very powerful, but deeply disturbing.

I love this film, (far superior to Argento’s ‘77 film of the same name,) it’s a 5/5 for me. When it comes to Argento’s trilogy, I personally prefer Inferno to Suspiria. Sure, the original film is good but I find there were plenty of giallo filmmakers at the time getting just as experimental, not to mention one of the earlier works in the genre, Mario Bava’s Blood & Black Lace. I will say, I do kind of see the 2018 film as an evolution of what Argento was doing with his films, if he’s not created that mythology I don’t think this film could have been what it was. I’m glad y’all seemed to enjoy it. I put on Thom Yorke’s score every so often as well, usually that and the Mandy score.

I don't understand why movie studios don't respect the original versions of their classic films. I have an idea.
