this was an absolute masterpiece, especially for the horror genre. I felt like I was under hypnosis the entire time, it was like I was being forced to watch something I wasn't supposed to watch. I was enthralled by every scene, every detail, every shot every sound every visual. There were scenes where I literally couldn't breathe, and I was just staring at the screen. A horror movie hasn't made me feel like that in a long time. Definitely worth the watch.

I concur! The acting was also remarkable esp. Tilda Swinton in her roles. Madame Blanc was simulteaneously creepy and congenial in ... prepossessing way. Her chemistry with the character played by Dakota (Susie Bannion) won me over. I felt simulteaneously ... dirty, cathartic and emotionally exhausted in a good way after.

@Amber, I was not planning on seeing this but your review has me intrigued, maybe this will be Black Friday movie, while everyone is shopping I'll go to see Suspiria. I just saw Overlord and enjoyed it. Its not artistic in any sense of the word but the monsters are brutal and it was just fun.

THIS is how you do a remake. Go in a completely different stylistic direction than the original film to give yours its own identity, yet keep the general unsettling atmosphere that made said original film work so well. On top of that, expand upon the characters and world in a way that works and - there you go! A remake that not only stands on its own, but is worthy of being placed alongside the film it’s based on.

@AL I agree. I’d love to see inferno or mother of tears done in this style. Too bad most of the actual artistic and brilliantly done films never succeed because they’re niche and no one cares. Same thing happened to Hannibal and channel zero.

Yes, I'm a pretty big fan of Argento's work (along with other Italian masters of horror like Lucio Fulci). And this remake seems quite dedicated in creating that same amount of sheer madness and the creeping build-up towards it. Also they didn't change the setting/timeline (70's Berlin), it has a 152 min runtime ánd an Italian director. So, what else could go wrong? Probably everything :(. But nevertheless I'm keeping my hopes high and my expectations great for this one. So fingers crossed... @@christophertroy1333

Another great example is a moment in his 2010 film "I Am Love" when Tilda Swinton's character rediscovers passion in her life when having a plate of specially prepared prawns. The way its shot and paced makes it feel like you're smelling and tasting the prawns as she does.

As a big horror film enthusiast, I can tell you straight up Hereditary & The Witch are two of the best modern horror films of the past 10 years. Both fall in line with what Ti West did with The House of the Devil. All 3 were incredible in developing an ever-increasing suffocation and overwhelming sense of hopelessness (in a good, horror-movie watching kind of way). I know many who felt Hereditary was overrated, but the movie fell victim to the type of excessive & unnecessary pre-release hype all too common these days. This is the danger Suspiria is in right now, because this trailer is one of the creepiest I’ve seen in a long time. You see inspiration of Kubrick all through it.
@adam-ll1yf

Beau Hinely I fear the same thing. I don’t think Amazon is trying to hype it up as much as A24 did with Hereditary. That is one of A24’s biggest flaws, they market niche horror films to mainstream audiences which is why they often have high critic scores and low audience scores. Still, Hereditary was their biggest debut of a horror film, but how much longer can it go on? Amazon seems to know what their movie is and who to sell it to.
@beauhinely6905
@beauhinely6905 6 жыл бұрын
Adam Taucher I’m hoping you’re right about Amazon. Truly looks like a great horror film from the trailer. Can’t say I blame A24 though: I think they go in to the marketing phase aware of possible overhype. I’m guessing they’d rather have that kind of problem than having to deal with failure to get the word out on a good film due to poor marketing, which is something a lot of studios seem to struggle with.

I'd rather see the Oscars divided by genre than by gender. That gender category has been used to hide the fact that women so rarely make up leading roles for decades, because there's always an Oscar for lead actress (usually given to a supporting actress to a male lead). Comedy, horror, animated voice work, and dramatic roles should all be given their due for the different skill ranges they require. Rather than gender classifications.

@@alexpilgrim8248 - The subtext was about driving the point about extreme politics and how it compares with the coven and how situations/plots don't work out as intended for the "extremists" in the film. The desired result backfired with traumatizing results for the characters AND the audience. Those that were offended by the films' imagery and themes, are better off not watching REAL horror - which should have disturbing characters, themes, imagery, and subject matter. The "red scene" was shot in that way to avoid an NC-17 rating, no doubt about it. It was quite the spectacle and twisted.

After watching this film 5x already (yes i'm that dedicated to movies, and it never fails to amaze me) I'm confident to say that this movie is fantastic from start to finish. Luco guadanino really make this his own "cover" rather than a remake, and making sure that if you half-assed watched this movie you will forget it. but that's the real beauty of this film, you really need to understand every nook and cranny of detail that it has so that you can understand it even more, and the creep factor ramps up from beginning until the end, and by the time you're done you'll need a good breather just to process everything. Highly recommend going in this movie without knowing the original movie since that movie is it's own thing.

Color palettes brought a danger to the original film. While not directly copying it. So I like this director, loved bigger splash and call me by your name, Dakota Johnson is a great actress and Tilda Swindon is a chameleon when it comes to inhabiting a character. But I also like not being scared and sleeping at night. So this is gonna be a tough one for me

I think this is how remakes should be made by keeping the same plot and essence of the original while making it your own and improving upon the areas where the original failed in because whats the point of making a shot for shot remake if we have the original to watch?

I’m not a fan of horror films, but there’s a high chance that I’ll go watch this! The cinematography, the art direction, everything looks beautiful. This looks like a horror film that actually has substance, not just cheap jump scares.

I just watched “suspiria” Don’t think it’s officially out for another 3 weeks in the UK? (Halloween pre-release) I have to say that I can’t stop thinking about it. Wasn’t sure at first but then there was a scene that will stay with me for a while.....Set the tone for the rest of the movie. Tilda Swinton is brilliant as is Dakota Jonson. Very stylised and well done trippy romp. Loved the soundtrack too so googled it and it’s only Thom bloody Yorke!!! Well worth a squirt

Let's see what the reception at Venice is like first. Although if the movie itself is as great as the previews have been, it would certainly be an inspired nominee.

Luca did an amazing job taking a very unique and underrated source material and turning it into an art house gone horror flick that holds nothing back with its depictions of raw emotion, pain and violence. This movie was disturbing and beautiful at the same time and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a hypnotizing yet intense watch.
