Sussex Toll gates have now disappeared from the roads. In this vintage episode, the Bald Explorer explores the remaining toll gates of Sussex. Join the adventures of the Bald Explorer as he discovers Britain
Before the Turnpike Trusts of the 17th century the roads were dreadful, barely more than simple tracks. When the tolls came into being things took a lot longer to improve. Richard Vobes goes off in this short documentary to find some of the Sussex Toll Houses that once graced the roads and were responsible for collecting the money to improve the roads.

That was brilliant, we live in Polegate East Sussex. We had a Tollgate at the top of our high street. It was pulled down in the 1900s with the blacksmiths and many other buildings.

Fascinating film Richard. I always wondered what the round building was next to the A27. My mother’s sister, and her husband, worked on a farm in Staffordshire, where I would visit and stay every summer. They rarely left their village and that was only to attend the weekly farmers market, or go shopping, once a week. Each year they would travel to London to stay with his relatives. It’s amazing to think that in 50 years how things have changed! 🤭

Have driven past this many times. Thought it was an ice house! Great pictures from 'back in the day' Richard, thank you! Especially impressed to see the picture you found of the original pair of structures framing the toll gate. How many others have been lost due to road widening?! One long winter's day, we can talk about Coal Tax Posts that were on the boundary of Greater London and even a Coal Tax OBELISK or two! (I have many pictures of the aforementioned). And don't even start me on the Pelham Turnpike with the Bow Bells symbols on the A22 and A26 milestones! Bless you for educating us on your historical finds - you are an inspiration!

It might have been a vintage one, but it was a good one! Who woulda thunk the history of English roads was so interesting?!?!😄 Amazing that 117 Roman roads still exist! Bramber looked like a wonderful little town. I know I got hooked on you (& found you) because of my grandfather's Bramber Castle. Now I need to see if you have done a walking tour of Bramber the town.
