In 2015 it was estimated that approximately 5.5 million tons of plastic waste were generated in scientific labs worldwide.
Depending on the research topic a scientist can generate between 60-1,600 kg of plastic waste every year.
These numbers are astonishingly huge and we as research scientists need to do better to ensure our research in understanding and improving health and the rules of life in general with transformative technologies does not come at the detriment to the preservation of our ecosystem and array of wildlife that inhabits it.
In this video, I have a special guest Adriana Wolf Perez (PhD) who is a research scientist at Cambridge University within the Center for Misfolding diseases but more importantly, she is a passionate writer and environmentalist who co-hosts an amazing podcast known as The Caring Scientist: Mission Sustainable ( linktr.ee/thec... )which delves into the area of sustainability in science.
Sustainability within research is feasible and there are little things that could be done to improve your labs' sustainability like Increasing the freezer temperature from -80 degrees to -70 degrees to help reduce energy consumption by 30-40%, turning off chemical fume hoods helps to reduce energy consumption as they can use as much energy as 3.5 households every day and to minimize plastic waste we need to try and REDUCE plastic usage through planning, REUSE through decontamination and RECYCLE whenever possible.
Hope you enjoy the video. Take care, Stay Blessed, Dream Big and keep being inspired.
