I agree with you in that not all handmade gifts are appreciated. I only make things for people I know will want them.

We’ve never done Christmas jumpers - but the idea of basting on festive motifs to an ordinary jumper is a great idea. I used to help my mum make Christmas crackers every year when I was growing up, again with home made items in them. She has instilled in me the idea of reusability, and thrift. All this was borne out of necessity!

I am from Austria and in my family we haven't used wrapping paper in at least the last 20 years. Luckily I own quite a lot of pashminas (nice Indian shawls), plus there were always plenty of big fabric pieces in the kid's dress up drawer. Perfect for wrapping up all the presents. Since our kids are now young adults, we don't have a dress up drawer anymore, so I sewed couple of bags. Even easier ones, than you did, Sam. No drawstring, just 2 ribbons sewn into the sideseam. Even part of our Christmas tree decorations are selfmade: stars made from straw, golden walnuts (First try to get the walnut out without damaging the shell. Then add one of these ribbons you get in rtw clothes at the shoulder between the shells, before glueing them together. Colour in gold or silver.) This year I also made some small ornaments, by piecing fabric scraps together, cutting out triangles, attaching them to felt, adding also a treetrunk from felt to them and a ribbon for hanging. And voila, beautiful patchwork trees. My sewing machine has couple of fancy stitches, so I sewed "girlandes" on top of these mini trees, so now also the back looks very pretty. Golden girlandes on red felt. And my scrap bag is a little bit smaller. Sam, I really enjoy your series. Well researched and you offer quite a lot of ideas.

I think my current favorite handmade gift idea (idea because I just heard about this but haven’t done it yet) is giving a gift inside a handmade pillowcase! That way the wrapping is usable. Happy new year Sam!
