I've heard of the research and the test trials look promising. As with anything when we try to engineer ecological systems, it may cause other unforeseen problems. Still, we're in a desperate zone. I'm all for more research and expanding that effort but the whales do it better. Thanks.

And Japan, Norway and Iceland still hunt whales even though theres no need. Its cruel, inhumane and bad for the ecosystem. Not to mention that whales are incredibly intelligent and have human emotions.
@joshwatkins4310
@joshwatkins4310 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think its fair to say that emotions are "human." After all, they were here first. This is just one example of how humans try to think they are separate from the animal kingdom. We are not special, we are animals just like whales, the fish, the plankton, the krill, and any other animal you can think of. However, I do agree with your point about whales being intelligent and your criticism of Japan and Norway.

Brilliant. We need all wildlife to remain exactly where it is if we are to survive as a species ourselves. Survive in a balanced and biodiverse world anyway. We have a responsibilty to protect all living things, not just for ourselves, but for all other living things. The living planet works in mysterious ways, ways in which we are only beginning to understand, so let's be sensible and brave and make big changes to the way we treat the planet and all it's inhabitants, before it's too late to save these keystone species.

A similar "interrelationship" was discovered between bears and salmon several decades ago in the Pacific Northwest. Apparently some "genius" got the idea that humans should kill bears because they were eating the salmon. Sure enough, the salmon population declined! (Turns out the dead salmon on the banks nurture the the entire river ecosystem/food-chain, all the way down to insects.) P.S. I found it difficult to understand the narration due to the level of the background music.

I love the video, but what it doesn't address is the ph levels of the ocean, due to increased freshwater infiltration from increased land ice melting, absorption of carbon and other factors. Plankton need a very specific ph level (8.2-8.4) to form their exoskeleton. Not all trophic cascades are from the top predator down thru each ecosystem. For example, the wildebeests are the keystone species in Africa's savannah and plains (primarily prey). Take out the wildebeests, the whole ecosystem collapses. Look what happened in the 1970"s due to a mass disease thru them. Sure, a rare example of an herbivore keystone species but each ecosystem is different. I'm not trying to be negative, only realistic. Mankind has more than beyond the intelligence these days. We need to learn to co-exist with nature in all ecosystems, before it reaches a point of no return in each one.

Great video! I would say that the same argument holds not only for whales but for all fish in the sea at their own scale. When we fish, we mine the atoms that make up all the marine biomass and this poses a limitation as to how many animals can be present in the sea. With less animals, the nutrients are not dispersed and remobilized into biomass efficiently and falls to the bottom. The role of animals is underestimated in the IPCC reports as their actions are not taken into account in the climate models so far. The overall logic is that the physics determine the climate on its own when animals could help us maintain good living conditions on Earth.
