Its always sage advice to slow down. Time and time again a Im a victim of trying to rush things only to have it all fall apart.

Yep, that happens a lot I think. I think it comes from too much emphasis from demonstrators on water loading, talk of acceleration etc. and over emphasis on a dynamic D loop etc. and the truth is, some very accomplished casters can use those techniques to push the envelope to create line speed and power but a decent D loop with a light anchor can create sufficient line speed for most situations. Watch the line speed Ed Ward creates at 1:25 using primarily the forward cast kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIbQqYN5raZ7qpI

As for myself, I will try and let the anchor soak once I get the darn anchor set properly to begin with. My casting stroke is way too fast already, from the beginning to the end as if it is going to bite me if I don't get it out and away quickly. I hope to have a video or two in the next couple weeks for your amusement as I restart my spey casting campaign for this year a little, heck - a lot later than I wished.

Hey thanks buddy! I’m excited to see how your casting improves this season. I am really looking forward to seeing you slow down!

Riddle me this oh wondrous one - What is/are the determinate factor(s) in how long you let it soak? Terminal tackle (type of tip, fly type, etc.), the spey line itself, the style of casting (Skagit, traditional, scandi, etc.), current speed, wind, mood, or some other metric? I would hazard a guess as current speed and terminal tackle, but I sense a shortcoming in my analysis. The interaction of the spey line with the current nags at me some.

Good observation Water Sprite! This is primarily a Skagit casting principle, set forth by Ed Ward and the Skagiteers. You are correct in that the heavier the flies and sink tips, at least for me, the shorter the soak. if so much as a bead headed wooly bugger is used I soak longer to avoid the heavy skagit head blowing the anchor on the sweep. If a soak is required in fast water the anchor can be set further upstream. Also powereing way down on the sweep will help from blowing anchors. Looking forward to those casting videos my friend, but no pressure, keep relaxed, take your time, have fun and enjoy your health!

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins "Also powering way down on the sweep will help from blowing anchors." Do you mean keeping the sweep low as opposed to a higher sweep? Or, do you mean lessening the power in the sweep?

Would this help with a single hand scandi line? I just bought a single hand Scandi line for my 9ft. 6wt rod. I haven't tried it yet.

Hey Big Ron good to hear from you.Yes, these principles are pretty universal, although , depending on the length of your new line it may be a little more forging than some of the heavy, short skagit heads. What line did you get for your single hander?

@@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins I got the Rio Single handed Scani
@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins5 жыл бұрын
Yes Ron these principle should apply although the longer lines may be a a tad more forgiving so the blown anchor issues may be less of a problem. Give it a go and see how it works for you and let us know how you like the line.

I will be moving up to 12ft or 15ft leaders next for more slick on the switch rod but on the single rod 5ft or 7.5ft is good .Jedi i tell ya, i blew a lot of Anchors last year because (1) casting to quick with shorter heads.(2) Over powering the cast.
@LineSpeedJediTimRawlins5 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The long leaders should help with the Anchor. I will be interested in hearing from you how longer leaders affect your hook up rate versus the shorter 9‘ leaders. Thank you for your continued support Stephen. I appreciate hearing from you every time you comment. Thank you again....Tim
