From Texas and have filtered water on a summer hike from a hog wallow (no other sources nearby) with a Sawyer Mini and had no bad effects. There is a charcoal filter that I purchased from REI used downline from the filter and the filtered water is indistinguishable from spring water.

I’m very curious to know how one of these gravity bags works in the cold. I had a failure of my Sawyer mini on a CO elk hunt and had to resort to boiling and then filtering snow with Folgers singles bags.

My favorite way of filtering is two smart water bottles and a full size sawyer filter. It allows time to fill up on water and go within less than a minute. The sawyer will screw directly to a smart water bottle or similar bottle like a 2 liter coke bottle and in my experience the full size has the best flow rate with the least amount of drop in flow rate as it is used.

The Survival Filter personal straw can be purchased with 2 water bag canteens that you can fill relatively quickly at the water source to carry the water until you attach the water straw to the bag and filter/drink straight from the bag. The bags are approximately 1 liter so you can also pre-treat the dirty water with a 1 liter dose of Iodine tablets or even a few drops of chlorine for a half hour or more before drinking with the water straw to layer up protection.

Trace mineral drops. Google them and order a bottle. Good for hundreds of liters.

the life straw sucks, you have no other use for the water than to directly drink it, so i bought a siphon pump and used it with the lifestraw and the "in" end of the hose, now i can filter water for many uses.

Look at what Thru Hikers use on the Appalachian trail Pacific Crest and continental Divide. 90% use a SAWYER SQUEEZE I’ve used it over 3,000 miles and it really is the standard for filters. Many different ways to set it up. Please don’t buy a life straw.
