I loved the serial "Pyramids of Mars," And while Sutekh is cool, and all, my favorite part of the story is Sarah Jane. This is the story where we discover that Sarah Jane Smith is a crack shot with a rifle, and she shows off that skill while wearing former companion Victoria's white lace dress. (also, this is the story where we learn about the Doctor's bypass respiratory system ...or whatever the techno-bio-babble is... which is the same adaptation that saves him on "Mummy on the Orient Express") As for how Sutekh could come back, well, the Doctor trapped him in a time tunnel... in a show about time travel. What if a well-meaning, but clumsy and amateurish, time-traveler does an experiment that somehow causes the tunnel to break?

At no point in the orbits of Earth and Mars is the distance between them two light-minutes. Of course, most of the time they're somewhere between six and ten light-minutes apart.

Ah, The Pyramids Of Mars! I'm glad you talked about Sutekh, because I own a copy of this episode, but I've never watched it! I've got a ton of Classic Who episodes that I've picked up, but I've never seen, including some Second and First Doctor stuff recently, so this was super neat! Definitely talk about more Classic Who, Travis, because I enjoy a lot of it (in fact, it would be cool if you went into the Classic Series ties to the Sontarans, the Sea Devils (they're not in New Who just yet, though), and the Silurians), because learning the history of the show is super interesting! It would be great for fans of the last few Doctors, too, who weren't familiar with the Classic Series at all, so by all means, keep it up, Travis!
@brokenbridge63167 жыл бұрын
I'm simi-familiar with Classic "Doctor Who" Bradley Christensen. I once saw the "Genesis of the Daleks" and found it quite entertaining.
@bowtiesarebrilliant7 жыл бұрын
Genesis Of The Daleks is great, and one of my favorite Classic Who stories. There are some key differences, though, mainly that the episodes are longer (that one is around two-and-a-half hours, I think), but the writing and acting is superb, so you're getting quality work, regardless, even if the stories can run long and the effects can be hokey, but that's part of the fun.
@brokenbridge63167 жыл бұрын
Bradley Christensen---My favorite moment from that episode was when "The Doctor" was giving the expose on "What if" you were told a child would grow up to be a monster would you still kill him. Best moment of all the episode. Outside of Davros seeing his own creations destroy him, which reminded my a little of Frankenstein's monster killing him.
@bowtiesarebrilliant7 жыл бұрын
I loved the messages throughout it, because there was a lot of small messages within the episode, like Davros' own creations turning against him, the question of killing a child that you knew would grow up to be evil (they kind of did that in Series Nine, actually, when the Doctor saved Davros as a child, which I thought was super cool and interesting), but the moment that is most iconic from it is the Doctor holding two wires together, deciding whether or not he should commit genocide against a race that does the same thing. If he did that, would he be any better than the Daleks, and ultimately, the Doctor being the Doctor, he chose the path of peace.
@brokenbridge63167 жыл бұрын
Very true Bradley Christensen. I remember when the "Doctor" saved Davros as a child. It made an impression on me like no others. I also thought it was really low of Missy to trick Clara into a deactivated Dalek just so she could try and manipulate the "Doctor" into killing her.
@JohnAShort7 жыл бұрын
Fantastic! It's a great primer for Sutekh (and the classic Fourth Doctor adventure The Pyramids of Mars' mostly the work of the great classic Doctor Who writer Robert Holmes.) I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see what Sarah Jane Smith got up to while she was a regular in the show. When I saw that Gabriel Woolf was credited as the voice of 'The Beast' in the Impossible Planet I assumed that it was going to be Sutekh (since the Doctor calls the Osiran 'The Typhonian beast' in the original adventure. And indeed the story is partly inspired by Pyramids of Mars with this all powerful creature held in check by a more powerful force, but still able to take control of other's minds. Did you know Sutekh's original fall from grace was covered in the Faction Paradox audio series... Coming To Dust, The Ship of a Billion Years, Body Politic, Words From Nine Divinities, Ozymandias & The Judgement of Sutekh. Like the Big Finish audios you mention (The Triumph of Sutekh in which you battles the Seventh Doctor) they got Gabriel Woolf to voice him. He is about to return again in a Big Finish story up against Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor.

@justinodemon6196 ай бұрын
Susan isn't a Harbinger. Harriet is. I think Susan is just being possessed and I think she really is the Doctor's granddaughter and she disguised herself like the Doctor and Master did with the stopwatch. I think Sutekh is just taunting the Doctor when he says "You thought you were releatd?" This explains the dreams and her showing up as human. I also beleive the TARDIS anagram was meant to be a warning. I also think she's is Ruby's mother and that she was pointing at the TARDIS, again as a warning. She was likely also not able to be seen because of the same stopwatch thing. It's meant to have a kind of perception filter so people don't ask questions.

I remember watching the first broadcast of this story as a small boy in 1975 and what was fascinating about it was that it followed, only months before, the launch of both Viking Probes to Mars in August and September 1975. So, for us in the UK a mythologised explanation about why there were pyramids on Mars and Earth was fixating on the possibility of an alternative to our creation. Decades later Stargate was released and then a very successful franchise but I suppose America was secular enough then to think it possible to believe there were alternatives to the biblical narrative?
