phantomsmom1 Possibly this was the Ed Sullivan Show. He was one of the last from the time that USAmerican television was replete with Culture, Science, Art, Music and more. Perhaps you are not old enough to remember. Like USAmerican education...... all art and music departments have disappeared in most of the schools across the nation. My quite young father bought a television 1948, I was nearly 2. I don't remember what was on then but I do remember as of the early 50's. There was of course silly programs and children's programs but there was also an enormous variety of programming. Live mostly but then filmed. Nearly everything was educational of some type. I watched live plays, ballet, opera, science programs, astronomy, mathematics all made very interesting. There were university debates which I probably did not fully understand but the sheer excitement teams of students made the prospect of learning thrilling. There were also intelligent discussion programs with some of the great minds of the time and true journalism with reporters that were actually brilliant and had travelled the world. Not like the plastic barbie and ken types that now flood every network who are idiots and no nothing about real journalism. Alas it all went. The low minds that took over wanted to appeal to the masses who were the small minds who would by any rubbish they were sold so there were ever more advertisements and ever lower mentality programs. It has been a tragedy for the States and the turning of a valuable tool into something quite destructive to the society.

@globalman7 жыл бұрын
The thrill of listening to these two magnificent singers has never abated since I first heard this area many decades ago. And until I die I will never tire of listening to the sheer perfection that these ladies displayed. I have heard most of their recordings of this duet and also many other recording of other singers including Callas. And while I will not be unfair as to the brilliance of many other duets there is simply nothing the comes close to the magic that was Sutherland/ Horne. Certainly they were the last of their kind. There are no other names that dominate as we once had up to the late 20th Century. Everything now is manufactured and marketing. Sutherland, Horne, Callas, Tebaldi, Flagstaad, and their male counterparts became famous not with marketing but because they had genius talent and dedicated their entire lives to their Art. Thank you for this reminder of what we had and most likely will never come again. Not to mention that this is the last minutes of any culture on usa television. The dumbing down process had already begun in the 60's but was not completed until mid to late 70's.

I was in the audience the first time they performed Norma together - here in Vancouver 1963. What a beautiful memory!

Tell us more about it, please!
@vanmusician8 жыл бұрын
I was a teenager. I knew Sutherland's voice from her Art of the Prima Donna recording. I couldn't think of anything else for months leading up to the performances in October of 1963. I bought a ticket for opening night - their very first performance of this opera. Sutherland sounded a bit nervous in Casta Diva (compared to the recording I had). I found out later that she had been ill during rehearsals. I still remember the high E flat at the end of 'In mia man'. Horne was someone new to all of us. When she sang her opening line in a pianissimo from upstage it seemed the whole audience stopped breathing! Years later when I was getting into the opera business I got to try on the brick red cloak which was in the cover photo of her first recording of Norma - made with the other 3 leads from the Vancouver production.

This is from "The Ed Sullivan Show." I know because I saw the original broadcast. I didn't know much about opera and didn't like what little I knew. And I remember being absolutely stopped in my tracks when I heard this music, sung by these two women. Sounds cliche, but this broadcast changed my life. I was hooked from then on, especially to bel canto and to Sutherland.
