The pairing of their combined artistry never failed to reproduce the exact same sensation! The magical synchronicity, the timbre of one voice complementing the other rewarded the spectators with an ethereal opulence of sound, rarely matched and never bettered.

Siderale.

I believe that TV programming changed because the viewing public changed. The younger viewers wanted more of the Beetles and every type of rock music that came after it. Classical, big band, easy listening, Sinatra and the like went by the way side. TV stations and advertises wanted to appeal to that segment of the population that they felt would generate the most revenue. Even the old country western music faded away. Country is very. Popular today but for the most part it is rock with a southern accent. Then came the rap craze. Young people became drawn to this music with all of its vulgarity. Much of it degrading to woman in particular. It goes right along with the violent vulgar movies that have been produced by Hollywood over thy past 25-30 years, and on tv I might add. Then we all wonder why we see so much violance amongst young people especially. It’s all part and parcell of our decline as a society. Sorry for the rant. Just my opinion.

Have had the privilege of hearing Ms Sutherland sing multiple times. Certainly one of the top singers of the 20th century. But what many people don't realize is that she was a fantastic comedian. Got to see her in Fledermaus in San Francisco and she brought the house down.

Oh Joan...such Glorious singing that fills the soul to overflow with a kind of enthralling joy, a joy that is so close to tears paradoxically because we sense that we can only soar so high for every real but, in the end, fleeting moment...

Such clarity of sound, and great focus her voice had in the early days of her career! As time progressed, the sound became darker, heavier, overly covered, and even "hootie".

What I've always found most interesting about comparisons between her recordings made years apart is that the performance does not essentially change. When she prepared the aria with her husband, it was locked in place; there were no interpretive alterations, so second thoughts about phrasing. She learned it, performed it magnificently, and that was it. Unlike Callas, whose thoughts about an aria were constantly evolving and where a multitude of differences in interpretation could be found from one performance to another, Joan's version was set in stone. This is not meant to be a criticism of her, since her art is of the highest caliber imaginable.

Bel canto trios, quartets, quintets and sextets are just better than what came after. Everyone gushes over the 'Rigoletto' quartet (I have a feeling the movie had something to do with this) but these are just better. Donizetti, Mercadante, Bellini, Rossini...endless thank yous

Her voice was so huge in the theatre that it seemed to be coming from all around you and enveloping you rather than from the stage. She was also a delightful person. After one Sonnambula performance, I waited at the Met stage door, with at least a couple of hundred others at first, to catch a glimpse of her. It was January and an exceedingly cold night for New York. After more than half an hour of waiting there were only three of us left. Suddenly the stage door opened and someone came out and said "MFiss Sutherland wonders if you would have tea with her." I think all three of us thought we had died and gone to opera heaven. For the next 45 minutes we were able to sit and talk with her and Richard, ask questions about performing [the other two were voice students] and sit in awe of how down to earth our diva was.

The greatest recording of this sextet ever made. It is musically and vocally untouchable by any before or since. This one is for the history books. You have incredible greats all in their prime and the sound is the most incredibly beautiful amalgamation of voices ever put to record. Sutherland, Merrill, Siepi....ungodly fabulous.

Extraordinary Joan. Music, no matter how fiendishly difficult held no terrors for her. I get annoyed when people try to denigrate her when comparing to Maria Callas - they were very different artists with their own unique talent.
