I did this hike in 2015. As a 62 year old (at that time) with joint, muscle, and balance issues, it was a challenge. On the narrow ridge portions, I had to often get down and crawl on hands and knees. It took me 3 1/2 hours to get up as I recall, and about the same to limp back down. Worth it? Hell yes! Thank you for the video. 👍

I hiked to the top of Angels Landing three days ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. And I'm two months shy of 74. I first became aware of the climb last February from Tristan's excellent video. Over the last year my wife and I have become big fans of his adventures which I usually watch while walking a treadmill. And was sufficiently inspired by them to take a trip out west this summer. The week before going to Zion we drove down the Shaffer Switchback and entered the White Rim Trail for three days of camping and sightseeing. I want to say the hike looks a lot scarier on video than it actually is. Remember, you are not being sent to your death by the park rangers. The trail is sufficiently safe if you don't do anything stupid. The chain is placed where you need it. Watch where you step so you don't trip or get your foot stuck between rocks. Eat a good meal prior, bring at least a gallon of water, wear hiking boots or sneakers and stay on the trail. Do not go up or down the steep sections with the chain like you would walk a stairway. When going up face the rock. When going down do the same. That is, repel down using your arm strength. Trust yourself and good luck.

As British people we were lucky to get numerous visits to ZNP in before Covid hit. We made it up to Angels Landing in August 2014, by which time we were already in our mid-50s. Watching this video makes me wonder how the hell we managed it. Not only were there numerous people but also a father had insisted on taking his terrified handicapped son up which was causing quite a few issues. We get a guy who was Chief of Police in Provo UT and had come over from Maryland to take up the post - told us all his stories of trying to get to grips with being a cop in UT where the whole station went to breakfast on Sundays. We were finished for the day after the hike so we're amazed you were done with Angels Landing before 10am! Hopefully we will get back one day if we're ever allowed, but we long since learned to visit other quieter places and state parks. One of our most memorable Zion visits was at night in a full moon. That was truly astounding. We recommend Observation Point as a terrific hike.

I went to Zion in May a couple of years ago. The main canyon was so insanely crowded that I didn’t even bother. I had a really nice time in the Kolob section. The drive in in the Mt. Carmel highway was incredible as well. It was blocked by a rockslide when I needed to leave so I drove around and then circled back East at cedar city. This led me to discover the plateau and lava fields north of Zion which are a whole other brand of awesome. Basically the entire southern half of the state is incredible. I don’t know how anyone who lives there gets anything done.

I'm glad I got most of the main canyon stuff done years ago before it got too crowded. Though I still wanted to check out the hidden canyon hike. Best thing to advise is weekdays and get there when it opens. I'm a morning person, so not a problem.

@@jimmym3352 by all accounts I’ve read winter is the only time it is not overloaded now, and even then you have to start popular hikes early. I think eventually they will have to have a reservation system just to enter the park.

@@jimmym3352 I just looked up the visitation stats. December visitation increased from 70k in 2010 to 170k in 2019. This past December it was it was 230k. The big bump last year was probably from the pandemic.

Tristen, without a single doubt, this is amongst the most spectacular footage you have ever shown me, your fans, or for that matter, you have ever recorded. I'm 72 years old now and will never try that hike due to my age and increasing issues with vertigo that have been brought on by age. Also, I appreciate your efforts to visit these sites when there is less of a crowd of people. I'm not sure I understand why, but for me, so many people detract from the outdoor experience and add to the Disneyesque-like atmosphere. I guess it just boils down to the fact that the world is just too crowded for me LOL...

I've been up Angels Landing 3 different times when I was young and strong. Each time was terrifying and I had a hard time understanding how the park allows anyone up there considering the litigious nature of the world.

Very appropriate tone throughout the whole video: dangerous places... in your car you said "something mortals can do" and I started laughing out loud for real... to prove they are mortals? you cracked me up!!! when your camera dropped I gasped! By far the best video I have watched of Angels' landing (and I have watched a ton!) I think I have completely scratched that hike out of my bucket list... do not want to kick the bucket there for sure! although as you very well pointed out: it wouldn't hurt for too long, LOL OMG, so many funny comments rushing through my mind. And then you kept going with the decimation of the crops and the little cemetery at the end. You could say this is a very existentialist video! What did I like best? Over a period of decades I spent time doing many backpacking trips into Zion and exploring many of the canyon systems. The places there are so spectacularly beautiful it is like you are transported to another dimension. The adventures I had there are among my most cherished memories. Thanks for showing us this; it was over 35 years ago I did Angels Landing and it is still as beautiful as I remembered.

Great video! FYI for viewers - The Kayenta Trail is a nice option if the Angel’s Landing heights freak you out. It starts in the same place (the Grotto), gets you up 100-200 feet above the valley floor and meanders south along the west wall of the canyon. It eventually ties into all of the various Emerald Pools Trails and will dump you back out near the Zion Lodge along the Virgin River.

When I taught school in St. George, I'd take my kids hiking in Zion weekly in the off season. The best hike is The Narrows. Either direction is awesome. A side hike to Orderville Canyon is a must. The hike down from Kolob is another incredible hike and can be done in a day. After the hike don't miss a meal at the Bit and Spur. Best Mexican food outside of Mexico!

Loved the Angel’s Landing hike going up but it would have been nice to slow the camera while hiking down so that we could see more of the scenery. Angel’s Landing is easily one of my favorite all time hikes. For anyone wanting to do it, I suggest riding a bike in at like 5am and to start hiking up in the dark to beat the shuttle crowds. You can rent a bike or pedal assisted e-bike nearby in Springdale. Sunrise on top of Angel’s Landing is AMAZING! Great video as usual, Tristan!

I really want to do this hike, but i have a bad ankle that I’ve broken more than a dozen times so it’s very weak. Is it as hard going down as it looks? That’s what I’m worried about.

@@ivybrooks7963 It is not nearly as bad as it looks, but I would recommend bringing along trekking poles, especially for going down all of those relatively steep switchbacks before the “climbing” part starts. If used properly on the decent, you can take a lot of pressure off of your knees and ankles with trekking poles. I also put “climbing” in quotes because most of it is all kinda just like steps and the chains made me feel very comfortable. It gets crowded early, making going down a fairly slow process, so you can take your time and take it easy on the ankle. The hike is incredible and a workout for sure with many switchbacks leading up to the actual chain section, but not as dangerous as some make it seem. If you are in relatively decent shape, then I highly recommend grabbing some trekking poles (and a backpack you can store them in when you get to chains), wrapping that ankle up, and giving it a go! It’s amazing!

Thanks for another wonderful video adventure. Not going to lie, I had to close my eyes a few times watching this video. Thanks for sharing such spectacular footage with those of us who will never do this hike. I live in and enjoy the beautiful state of Utah and am trying to get to as many nooks and crannies as possible now I have the freedom of retirement. I was able to enjoy Zion back in the 70's while attending Dixie State College, long before Zion became overcrowded. Zion is one of the many places of breath taking beauty in our state. Grafton is a fun stop as well. Your videos are truly some of my very favorite, thanks again for sharing!

We went to Zion in mid-May of 2017. It was to warm and to crowded for us plus we travel with dogs so this wasn't going to work. We did eat our lunch in the shade by the stream near the parking lots and it was just far away sort of from the crowds. We left and went to the other side of Zion to the Kolob section and had a fine time (more elevation and a nice cooling breeze and way less people). We later went towards Cedar Breaks and saw Navajo Lake and snow alongside the road and lava fields.

My all-time favorite hike! I've always said that this hike isn't dangerous at all if you are in good health and make good decisions. I also recommend to others all the time to try to complete the hike as late in the day as you can. This allows for the most beautiful light for capturing photos/video, the temperatures are cooler, and you also have far fewer people to contend with while traversing the chains. Awesome video as always!

Just did Angel’s Landing last week and it was already way busier than when you were there- I think the most nerve wracking part was just trying to strategically make room for all the one-way passing (including some traffic jams that took forever)! Incredible trail though- amazing how the NPS was able to make this hike (fairly) comfortable/accessible for the average person! Thanks for the great tour, as usual. I’ve been covering a lot of ground myself, and do a lot of photography, but I appreciate seeing your vids!

When I did it as an add-on to an ultra-distance trail run called, Zion Traverse (from one side of the patk to the other in one day), I came to Angels Landing mid-day. There were TONS of people and, as this is very narrow, and even the narrowest parts are two-way traffic, that might be were the real danger comes into play. Yes, definitely not for anyone with vertigo! Take your time. Be patient! Bring water. Wear appropriate shoes, not sandals or flip flops (saw some weirdos in those). For you, me, and those in halfway decent shape, it is definitely doable, but if one is not in shape, do your loved ones a favor and stay away from it, and only virtually attempt it by watching Tristan's video. 🙏😊 Thanks for including the Ghost Town as well. Really enjoyed that part of the video, too!

We have been to Zion many times since 1987. I really love that park, but I'm afraid it is now way too crowded for us. We are glad to have seen many State & National parks in the 1980's and on before they became so crowded. Nowadays we just drive to out-of-the-way off the beaten path places where there are no or very very few people. We enjoy your videos very much and relive many of our memories reminded to us by you! Thank you for having me along! I have been to Zion on a work retreat and can hardly remember where I went exploring. Members of my party did the Angels Landing hike but, at the time, I was too intimidated by the descriptions of it to join them. I did a short hike and then ate at a local restaurant that served a bacon and cheese encrusted pancake which was good. I want to take my wife there for at least the experience I had (and more). That ghost town was pretty cool. I love to be in places that tell our history. Thank you again.

You were so fortunate to have almost nobody at the trail. When I did it, it was like the picture on the trailhead. You have to come down in the same trail , so that’s the problem. A lady was freaking out and she clogged the trail! I did 4 years it in my early sixties,, so most people can do it. Love your videos! LOVE UTAH AND ALL THE COLORADO PLATEAU!

Angel's Landing 30 years ago on our honeymoon. My wife opted out of the last section. Definitely one of my most memorable hikes. We did it on Halloween so there was snow and ice in parts. That narrow canyon section was serene!

September of 19 my wife and I rented bicycles at Zion Cycles. Free all day parking which was great. We rode to the park entrance and put the bikes on the front of the shuttle bus. Did the hike up to the narrows then biked all the back down to town with a stop at the lodge for lunch. We had a great time and I highly recommend it. Thanks for stirring up some great memories.

Soon after my wife and I got married, we camped at Watchman Campground in Zion. I think that was in the late 70's. I remember that in the evening we walked around and picked cherries off the cherry trees - it was very romantic. Yes, the campground used to be in the middle of a cherry orchard. I think the trees are gone now.

I've done Angels landing 3 or 4 times. It literally gets busier each time I do it - as the whole park has steadily increased it's visitation over the years. I think at some point it will become a permit hike, like Half Dome in Yosemite. I'd think you'd be able to hike to the overlook, but the chains section would be the permit part.

This is such a terrifying hike I did it halfway and I had to go back I was just too scared.

I agree that if you’re not scared of heights Angel’s landing hikes is not dangerous if you pay attention and don’t do stupid things like selfies on the edge on top. Yeah, I did the Half Dome hike last year and halfway up the cables where you have to step up a thick slab I really got scared for my life but managed to pull myself up. It’s one of the scariest hikes I’ve done.

OMG! We stopped at Scout's Lookout, mainly because Angel's Landing was closed due to Covid (June 2020). In my youth, I would have done it. Now at 60, Scout's Lookout and a little higher on the West Rim Trail was plenty for us. It is a gorgeous hike up there. The Narrows was also great. We went up the river a little more than a mile, but it got too late in the afternoon to keep going. We'll definitely go back for a longer hike in the Narrows, starting in the morning. You'll have to do it one day. Once you get up in the gorge, it's even more amazing. We always enjoy your videos! However, we both gasped a little when your camera fell over, thinking you were falling! 😳

Funny thing. My old hiking shoes started to fall apart hiking up the trail. So I stopped at Scouts lookout. Didn't even try continuing up to Angles Landing with broken shoes lol. We camped in beautiful Zion canyon 3 nights. It was about 100 degrees so we chilled in the river. Great relief. Hiked up the narrows wearing shorts. Fun times😉

Yikes, the parts without the chain handrail on precipices mad my stomach fall away just watching. Imagine doing that trail before the improvements and handrails were done!!! Couldn't even keep drinking my coffee after part of your camera system dropped. Yikes again. This is not one to take my dog on! Thank you for doing and recording this hike for me so that I can pass on doing it myself at 74, but still get to enjoy it :)

I'm gunna guess the trail was easier then the face accent...I use to build towers. Tall ones. But I could never grow a pair to further any rock climbing. Had a slot in a ice climbing school in N. Conway NH back in early 80s but wall was too unstable so it was canceled. So Big Kudos for climbing that face! I'm older now, mostly luck and some preparedness. So I wonder if...rather die outside then in a hospital bed. This is gunna be one of my favorite videos you have done, Tristan. Really. Amazing in every detail and second. Man. Whew. Stunning. Brilliant. And I knew it had to be your new camera...just the way it goes... Thank you, Tristan. Outstanding again!

Loved this! When I did it, the hardest part was making my way down from the top of Angel's Landing with all the human traffic going up, fighting for the chain and space to get down. I felt like, one little bump and over you'd go!

Unfortunately, I get vertigo very easily. My mind wants to, but not my body when it comes to hikes like that.iI get dizzy just watching you do it. When you dropped your camera, my heart skipped a beat, lol. Very thrilling and beautiful hike, Tristan.

Some of the best footage I’ve seen of Angels. Beautiful saturation. I can barely watch the footage though. It’s just too risky. I’d take a hike up the switchbacks but no way I’d hike to the summit, unless I had a parachute strapped to my back! 👍👍
