The Hobbit Panel Q&A with Dean O'Gorman and Aidan Turner at Boston Comic Con - Part 1

Dean O'Gorman and Aidan Turner (Dwarves Fili and Kili of The Hobbit) answer fans' questions at Boston Comic Con on Sunday, August 4. The video starts shortly after they sat down. The camera bounces around a bit so apologies for that. On a personal note, I have to say that Dean and Aidan are incredibly sweet, genuine, down-to-earth guys. They really seemed to enjoy meeting/chatting with the fans. And they were truly appreciative and touched by the gifts given to them as well as the show of support and enthusiasm for their work.

These guys seem like so much fun to be around. Would love to just casually hang out with them. And even though I do acknowledge how beautiful they both are, I also agree the fangirling in some cases is absolutely riddiculous and pathetic. Like, where the hell is your dignity, girls?

So true. I mean, I think I can't really avoid finding them very charming, they have a great sense of humour and seem overall just lovely. Of course I'd love to meet them or get to ask them questions. And I can't say I wouldn't smile like an idiot on one or two occasions. But hey, we're old enough to know how to behave, right? They're still human beings, not freaking pastries behind a shop window.

OMG, I love these guys! I love Aidan's smile, it just lights up his face, and he's almost always smiling. He also has beautiful eyes, they always have a sparkle to them. He's such a wonderful actor!

They handled every question with class and suavity-- even though most of the questions (especially from females) were... horrifyingly embarrassing to have to watch/listen to. They handled that so well. I respect their charisma as well as their acting ability now.

True Cat None of them were "horrifyingly" embarrassing - what an over-reaction. They're grown-ups - they can take a funny question about getting married with good humour (which they did). Most of the questions were fine, and some of them were good. So many comments here from 'holier than thou' folks - it's just fandom, people!

I'm not talking about O'Gorman or Turner. I'm referring to the crowd. There is supposed to be a level of sense in a question, no matter how "funny" it was trying to be. So, in my opinion, I find it horrifyingly embarrassing.

I wish they had assigned people as monitor(s) for the questions like they do at other conventions when actors attend. Basically, people would line up, tell the monitor their question and the monitor would either approve it and let the person ask the actors or disapprove it and not let them ask. It's mainly to avoid people asking awkward, too personal, or uncomfortable questions/requests. Majority of the time it's "Can I have a hug?" or the more awkward questions that wouldn't be allowed to ask. I've had friends at conventions that had really good questions before that just barely missed their chance to ask because the panel time was taken up with "Can I have..." or "Can you do..." questions or spending the time to avoid awkward questions while trying to be polite. (Which Dean and Aidan did very well when face with it, I am very impressed.) Suggestion to Boston Comic Con, question monitors are not only good for actors (and also makes them feel comfortable) but for other fans who miss asking their questions due to awkward ones taking up time.

i have absolutely nothing against people doing their own thing, it's none of my business, but for the love of all that is sacred, don't go to a q and a just to ask something that you know will make somebody uncomfortable, they don't deserve to be treated like that, just allow them to remain blissfully in the dark and refrain from creeping them out. (sigh) now that's over with well done these two for handling such an embarrassing situation like pros, you could almost see the silent dialogue in their body language, Aidan looked like he wanted to panic before Dean stepped in with the sarcasm, Dean himself almost looked quite amused to sort out the problem. Again, please don't go around freaking out innocent actors. and lastly before i end this lecture, isn't it great to see people whose characters are friends and who're also friends in real life?

This whole interview made me laugh like crazy but there is one question I always hated hearing in an interview... When they ask two guys about the whole "OTP" between two male actors... I don't know.. It just seems so rude and inappropriate.. I have nothing against gays srsly, I have my own gay OTPs but insinuating that to actors or actresses who probably is privy to those sort of things... It's really pissing me off.. Luckily Aidan and Dean simply dealt with it with a grain of salt... Love these two^^

but really, the question about OTP was absolutely inappropriate -.- i absolutely have no objections against gayness but to ask an actor, who acts the BROTHER of another actor, if they will get married is totally wrong and NONE of the fan's business. If two actors will get married then they will publish it if they want to but did this girl or woman really expect an answer like "oh yes, we're already engaged and think about marriage"? to ask a question like this and causing the actors to get uncomfortable is just bad and disrespectful. that's just what i think about that.

There are so many American accents, being such a huge country. Which specific accent? I find some regional accents in America really irritate me, and some don't. (I'm an American btw. But my grandfather was British and had the craziest Cockney accent that was so fun to listen to.) That aside, I love listening to the standard Kiwi accent. I think it's a shame that with all the TV shows that have been filmed in New Zealand for American consumption, so few of them are filmed with actors speaking with a Kiwi accent. Like there's something wrong with Americans hearing a Kiwi accent? It seems silly to me.

I'm seeing all the comments saying stuff like, "Omg the fans were so rude!" Can anyone tell me where the fans were rude? I did hear some questions that had nothing to do with the books or the movies or their characters, and I did get confused, but that's all I got from this. Also, I think people shouldn't full out judge the way people react to meeting their idols. You never know, maybe some of these girls have been watching their work for years and that could be why they're crying. It's understandable why people cry when they meet their idols; because they've probably only have ever seen them through screens, and to physically see your idol in person is a lot for some people. I know I would probably tear up and stutter out of nervousness, and probably cry hours after... but I wouldn't have a panic attack as some of these girls were claiming.(Again, people are different. Some people have more anxiety to meeting their idols than others.) I do believe there are boundaries though when it comes to questions and how some people react. So, where specifically are the fans being as rude as the comments are claiming? All I really got was a couple fans made some comments, but that's about it. P.S: Dean and Aidan did "handle" the crowd well.

If you're referring to appearances by Dean and/or Aidan, I recommend you follow Hobbit/LotR-related sites such as The One Ring and Middle Earth News, along with their twitter accounts. They stay on top of current news pertaining to The Hobbit cast members, including fan convention appearances. Both Dean and Aidan have fan sites and will share the same info. News is pretty quiet right now. To my knowledge, there are no scheduled U.S. appearances for either of them in the near future. Dean, however, is scheduled to attend HobbitCon in Germany in April. Hope that helps. :)

I think the majority of the annoyance is specifically at that question on when the two will be getting married. Mostly that it's in poor taste and it's presumptuous. It also perpetuates the myth that if two men are close friends, something sexual must be going on. Asking a question like that, even as a joke, to actors on a panel is also rather inappropriate. That girl didn't know them personally and didn't know if they'd take it as a joke or if it would upset or embarrass them. Ultimately, it was in poor taste and showed some poor social skills.

Sorry, but... I really hate when someone mention gay couples or something like when it's about the history of Tolkien. It's an amazing history with full of true friendship, respect and human values. It's not about the gayness! Never were and never will. It's about friendship when there were true people without fake. There are fangirls who can't understand the values of the story and I really feel sorry for them because it means they are so poor. Oh, don't get me wrong! There's nothing wrong with being gay. That's all.

Ian Mckellen didn't seem to think there was nothing to the gayness and the man lived this source material every day for 6 years collectively (rough estimation combining the 3 trilogies so pardon is that is a bit off). And so don't MILLIONS of others who read/watch the same source material as you and look beyond obvious and into the unspoken. Not everything is default straight or spelled out in an author's works. A number of character's sexualities were never defined outright leading people to believe, for example, Bilbo is either asexual or remained a bachelor in a British like country side (where he could've been judge more harshly for more than just his odd behaviors and adventure goings) because he was gay and didn't want to marry. Not a big deal one way or the other if the characters are or are not gay in any media including LOTR/Hobbit. And clearly in this video, the question seemed VERY much a teasing jab, a joke at the fandom/fans, not overly serious. And just because someone likes couples in a story (real or made up), doesn't mean they don't also comprehend the plot/values of it.
