I maintain boats for the US Navy. The absolute best thing you can do for any vessel is to run it. Run it. Run it. Run it. We have outboards in the SE region with over 8000hrs on them on many original factory components. Outboards are made to be ran. Not to sit. Run it often and run it hard.

Great video. I just purchased a boat with a 2002 Mercury 115 4 stroke and it's not running much above 2000 rpms. Got to do some fuel supply cleaning on it as it's been sitting for over a year. Compression is good so it'll be a learning curve on this 4 stroke compared to the 2 cycle Johnsons I've always owned. Thanks for taking the time to upload this video.

Ethanol gas and boats do not mix. Especially if they sit for 5-6 months or more. You’re right, additives are nothing but snake oil. Eventually this WILL happen if you use ethanol gas in anything that sits for extended periods.

You have to use fule stabilizer on anything you don't use weekly period, and everything needs standard maintenance. People don't read instructions! Sea tow loves it😂

We use a biocide for our inboard diesel (sailboat) and I was wondering if we need something like this for our dinghy outboard, a tiny 6 HP 4 stroke Suzuki that's running rough. I got new gas today and ran her for a while around Annapolis to clear out the old fuel from the lines. That helped her start more easily but she revs up and down so she's still not happy. Do you think a fuel stabilizer will help that?

Excellent explanation. FYI Its the same type of system of every 4 stroke. Just went through this on my Yamaha 4 stroke...it wasn't this bad..but the hi pressure pump sat in contamination and died. Don't trust your big name marine service shop with a good reputation to do this...mine was serviced yearly...then I bought it...and died from Corrosion...incomplete maintenance

I got a brand new 140 and it always hesitates, stutters. Just changed plugs for first time so hope that’s it…don’t want to deal with all these fuel issues. Primary filter on mine looks good and fuel has always been new.

I just did a series on rebuilding one of these motors for my brothers boat on my channel… his is a 2018 Suzuki DF140… he had extreme blowby by the time i got to it… the readings that were written next to the plugs were 140 140 170 170… and my brother said that those were he old ones and the new readings were 90 90 120 120… and all they wanted to charge him for was a new cylinder head at $9k… hence why i worked on it… can that excessive blow by damage the lift pump?

The lift pump thats mounted on the valve cover works off the pulses from crank case pressure… i was figuring if there is excessive blow by it might stretch the diaphragm of the lift pump… but now im also considering the issue that my brother might have is the needle sticking… i may just tell him till continue running it the off season when it can be down for a little while then well look at it… thanks for the video, it really helps for me to trouble shoot the loss of power while its running

@@hotheadzmarine Hey guys, i could use some advice. I have a 2013 DF140A. It has 200 hrs. It has a stall issue after i put the power on then pull back to idle. It stalls. It always restarts. I have to goose it a bit to take off agian. I noticed the low pressure paper filter next to the plugs gets air in it at idle. It drops half way down. Definitely has alot of air. The previous owner was a ding dong but he never put ethanol fuel. So i pumped the tank down and it wasn't to bad but it had a rusty water filter. It has a new racor 10 micron and fuel lines. It has a shitty atwood bulb. But the bulb builds pressure. I guess a new decent bulb would be the first thing and my tank fuel line is 3/8. The rest are 5/16 i believe. Any suggestions? I would take it in if you guys where close i just dont trust people around here. I can tell u guys know ur shit

@@jeffmech600 That's a little difficult to diagnose in a message without having the engines presence. Could be a number of things. My first thought is spark plugs. Second is overheating. Primarily the combustion Temps. Fuel is always a concern but if sucking air at low but runs good wot then doesn't make it a suspect but needs resolved for sure. To much fuel additive is becoming a big issue now days as well have you added some recently?

Hello, thanks for the video 😊. Got a DF50 1999. Motor starts well, after running 30 minutes if set to idle, motor cut off like no fuel and won't start until 20 to 40 minutes. 😕

If you’re running ethanol-based fuel eventually you will still have problems we service, mini mini watercraft with you water separator’s that have damage fuel systems from water, however Yes and I mean if you drain your fuel water separator frequently into a jar to check for water you will probably be ahead of the game regularly, but like I said, if you run ethanol-based fuels every couple of years, you better tear the fuel system down and give it a good cleaning, and I mean all of the fuel system, VST tank, fuel, injectors, fuel rails, fuel lines, gas tank, etc. etc. that’s just my opinion from what we see in our business thank you for your comment. the manual. look for an online manual. If not You can always use bolt torque by bolt size charts. just google it. off the top of my head I would say 12-15 ft pounds if size is 8MM diameter threads.

@@hotheadzmarine um. My training in engineering told me the more air in the tank, the greater the possibility for the moisture in that air to condense in the fuel, thus MORE fuel decreases this risk, not less. I'm clearly misunderstanding something here

@@scottgarriott3884 lol... 👌. Atmospheric venting of ethanol enhances opertunity for accumulated moisture within the air. We Marine engineers used to tell everyone to keep a full tank but now we have to do just the opposite. We see this on a daily basis. We pump more water from fuel tanks than ever before in 43 years of my mechanic stewardship and engineering. You should see some of the stuff We do.. crazy stuff.. the vids are and started out as customer files only and still basically are to show our customers and give them a laymen understanding of the scenarios to maintain and repair there particular watercraft. It just starting helping some folks as well. We are so busy anymore we rarely have time to go in depth and produce even a tainted video. There are however, many Marine mechanics on KZbin outlining water and ethanol based petroleum in intellectual detail and I urge anyone desiring the knowledge to view several others to enhance there knowledge. I do appreciate and understand your comments and value them as a report on how we should better propose our intellect. If i unscrew the bolt on the fuel rail and cycle the key should the electric fuel pump continuously try to prime or does it only for a moment or would it keep trying to prime due to the rail being unscrewed

Trying to use SDS software on a 2015 DF20 outboard. DF20 has an ECM, but it looks like you have to actually power the ECM separately (since there's no "on" switch for the motor and it doesn't have to be connected to a battery to run). Can you tell me anything about this ECM power cable and how to connect it?

What if the motor runs strong, but is dumping fuel into the water and you can see it around the back of the boat and smell it. Obviously its a leak, but I'm thinking it may need a carburetor rebuild?

I have a 1999 70 go Suzuki that is only getting 6.4 volts when checked at the fuel pump connector using a volunteer with the red to pink and black to the black/white wire and 12.2 volts with the black wire grounded to the engine. The manual says to replace the ECU which is over $1000.00. Could I ground the black/white wire to the engine to make the pump get the 12 volts needed for it to pump. I have already replaced one pump before I found the low voltage problem.

Need to think why is ECM shutting voltage off on ground? Is it because ECM is bad or is something telling it too..Limp mode..overheat, low oil, etc.. I dont have much to offer on it unfortunately I would need to have it to check and verify all systems but likely and very well may come to the same conclusion of R&R emcee. This is a GREAT QUESTION. I used to recommend seafood but "sea" no benefits on today's 4 stroke FI engines. I also used an enzyme treatment for a while but also didn't witness any benefits. What we are seeing A LOT OF is customers using fuel treatments and not using recommend amounts and causing fuel to lose octane so much engines will not even run. So at this particular point I do not recommend any but only recommend non ethanol based fuel or draining the vst tank regularly as well as dual spin on water fuel separator filters

Yes pretty much. Owners need to empty these fuel systems regularly. The manufacturers have put all kinds of drains to be utilized. Todays pressurized fuel systems are less problems pertaining to contamination and separation/phasing is my belief and must be there's as well or why would they do it.. the b.s. is eco fumes..etc...truth is evaporation and condensation

@@christiandrumr80 I honestly dont know of any product that will eliminate the issue's resulting from ethanol and atmospher vented fuel cells.
