Exceptionally well filmed, thank you! Many outboards have black/dark colors on the engines themselves, and many outboard videos are filmed inside or under shade where there just is not enough light or color/shade contrast to see clearly the various pieces involved in whatever they are trying to demonstrate. You expertly avoided all of that-thank you again for such a superior demonstration and educational video.

@Dakimis3 ай бұрын
@@kpjsportsmaster The fuel filter was NOT the problem. The motor was overheating which caused the motor to go into idle mode. This is a safeguard to prevent serious damage. After the motor cooled down it would work normally for a couple of minutes until it overheated again. I finally fixed it by removing the engine head and manually removing salt deposits that were completely blocking the water passages. I tried to flush it out with Barnacle Buster first but it was too hard packed. These small motors are susceptible to clogging and you have to flush it out really good with Salt Away after each use in salt water. The mechanic that was working on it said that was the last resort but said it would cost more than the motor was worth. So I did it myself.

My name is Josh and this is my wifes account, So I have a 2021 9.9 and have been going through all kinds of problems. Mostly it wanting to die on me. kept thinking it is a fuel problem or fuel pump issue. tested fuel pump and it works and injectors are clean and working. But i did a tune up on it and changed spark plugs MR6K-9. Those are the plugs that came with it and what came in tune up kit. So i was checking gap from the manual and noticed the manual says to use NGK CPR6EA-9 plugs. I happened to have a set from my 6HP suzuki outboard so i just tried them. It has literally solved the dying issue and my motor sounds so good. My question is why really? Im umsure what to do now?

I know these are all old comments, but for future people that might see this later on. Usually the only things that go wrong with the smaller suzuki's are simple Fuel filters clogged or just needs new spark plugs. The low pressure and high pressure filters are around $20 each or less. It is so easy to work on the small suzuki outboards. I have a df25A with low hours as well and it was ran with approx 10 hours on it, then I put it in storage for 3 years. It was transported as I moved and was in a rush to get out of the house we sold. I advise if you have to transport the outboard on its side for any reason, to drain the engine oil out first. If you don't drain it out and lay it on its side, the oil can work its way to the air filter and leak out. It can work its way in the intake and you will need to take the spark plugs out to be able to turn it over and get all the oil out of the cylinders. This can also foul out the plugs if you try to reuse those spark plugs. This can also get oil in your fuel lines, etc which can cause issues with the filters and such. So, just keep that in mind, if you have to transport the engine on its side I would just drain the engine oil out, it can save a lot of headaches. You will have some people say you can transport them on one side, technically yes you can on the side the manufacturer suggests. However I suggest draining the oil / gas out first regardless as you never know how rough the transport is going to be. The smaller suzuki outboards are just about bombproof if you keep up with maintenance.

What does the ecm add to opening up the intake besides upping the rev limiter? I'm running mine on a 33' catamaran so displacement hull not planing. I put a 16mm hole in my restrictor plate. It pulled 5500 rpm before with a 5" prop and now pulls about the same with a 7" prop. Will the 20hp ecm help lower speed torque which is what I'm after. Thank you, your videos have been very helpful.
@laingej4 жыл бұрын
Yes get a 20hp ecm.. dont drill the restrictor any bigger.. or you will redline at 5700 rpm. With the 20hp ecm tou will be able to remove the restrictor completely will get more torque and you can go higher prop pitch maybe a 9” for your application good luck
@thedogsailor4 жыл бұрын
@@laingej Thanks, two things though. I don't want to run it much passed 5000rpm, too noisy. It's a big, slow catamaran so I'm looking for midrange torque. Unless I re-hub a different prop, the 10" diameter, 7" pitch, square tip, 4 blade, hi thrust prop is all they offer. It is quiet different than a plaining boat prop. I need the reserve as well for the times I'm forced to motor into waves and 20 kt winds. Does the 20hp ecm change any mapping other than rev limit?
@laingej4 жыл бұрын
@@thedogsailor yes just get a bigger pitch propif you rev pass 5000 or get a 4 blade prop that will be best for you for mid range. Rpm is lower and have more trust

@@laingej I appreciate your videos and replies but I still don't know if the 20hp ecm will make any difference for my boat? I already have the 7", 4 blade, hi-thrust prop and in flat, calm water that prop with 16mm hole in the restrictor, full throttle does 5500 rpm, which is great. For everyone fallowing this, we're going out for a few days so I'll post how this works, real world. It seems an awesome motor, especially for the price and should work well on a pontoon boat, too.
@laingej4 жыл бұрын
@thedogsailor i understand just keep an eye on it ..it could run lean with a 16mm hole in the restrictor..im not sure yet if the 9.9 ecm can compensate fuel for the extra air. I drilled my restrictor center hole 8mm max to be safe. With the 20hp ecu you can remove the restrictor completely and you will double the power.. you can still keep it at 5000 rpm limit you like with a bigger prop and it will get a faster top speed because the pitch is greater. Im yet to test and compare the fuel amounts injected by the two ecm’s maybe the 9.9 can match the 20hp fuel ? I dont know will find out
