here's my experience with r & r the water pump. the pump cost $43. i was under the hood for probably 7 hours. some of that is because i don't have the right tools to do things quickly and it's my first time doing the job with this car. a time consuming job but definitely doable if you have the tools. you need some way of working with the tension pulley or you won't be able to r & r the serpentine belt. i estimate i saved myself about $300 parts and labor over taking it to a shop.

Just so you know, all these come from the factory with grey silicon gasket maker on the water pumps. Its a very common practice on Japanese imports to use silicone instead of gaskets. I'm replacing mine this week, has a small leak at 80k miles, 2004 aerio. Thanks for the vid!

@@redshirt-scotty thanks! The whole job took around 5 hours, but I also took the time to add a transmission oil cooler. I replaced the pump with a NPW Japanese replacement, which came with the housing o-ring and all, and also put in a new thermostat and accessory belt. I replaced the rad cap as well, so we might call it a “complete” cooling system refresh. Thanks again!

Just took off my water pump with the aid of this video after it did the exact same thing as yours. Thank you! Now, I just have to wait for the new pump to arrive in the mail. That serpentine belt looks like a doozy. I’ll try to use the method you implemented.

I bought a 2006 Aerio SX brand new back in 2005. The water pump failed at around 13,000 miles with some audible warning about a week before failure but it could only be heard when next to a cement or brick wall like at a drive-through window. I wasn't sure what the sound was but sounded more like a squeaky suspension component at the time. If failed right after I started up the engine after being parked over night, dumped all the coolant on to the cement parking space. Luckily I noticed the liquid on the ground. Dealership was only a few miles away but it was summer so only could go about 6 blocks at a time before the engine would reach the red temperature zone. Took a couple gallons of water with me and re-filled several times before reaching the dealer. Of course it was covered under warranty. I think there must have been a bad batch of water pumps that made it in to some 2006 models.

l had a 2006 Aerio SX that lost its water pump at around 13k miles. Covered under warranty of course. Sounds like there must have been a batch of defective water pumps for 05/06 model years. BTW for jobs like these it's a good idea to have some AT-205 Re-Seal on hand for all the seals and o-rings that may need to be reused. You can just coat the seals/o-rings in the Re-Seal product and it will restore them to a flexible condition for reassembly and dramatically reduce the chance of a leak occurring after reassembly or not too long down the road which of course would be hugely frustrating after having gone through all that work. When ever possible l like to soak the rubber seals/o-rings in the Re-Seal for about 24 hours then reinstall. When that's not possible then even dabbing them with the Re-Seal while they are still in place works too but wait 24 hours after reassembly to run the car. Re-Seal has saved me many times when l haven't had a replacement seal/o-ring on hand or l got shipped the wrong one and had to reuse the existing one to get the job done. While l'm at it l also spray some of the Re-Seal on all the rubber suspension boots, exhaust hanger gaskets, and motor mount gaskets as well. Keeps them soft and pliable for decades when applied regularly.

yup, how does a new with the vehicle water pump fail? you're the first to post a comment about losing a pump in the first 20k or less besides me. re-seal good stuff. my pump is still going. ac/delco unit is solid.

@@redshirt-scotty if you havent visited AerioStyle.com yet there are others there that have had the water pumps fail early. The other issue with these years of the Aerio was abnormal tire wear due to suspension issues. Suzuki didnt really have an effective fix for the tire issue but an aftermarket bolt kit solved it for most people. Really wish they hadn't discontinued the Aerio though. I ended up trading for an SX4 but the Aerio SX was more practical size wise. The S-Cross would have been a good replacement for the Aerio but unfortunately we never got those in North America due to the ASMC bankruptcy.

@@JA-rn5qv i'll have to do some aeriostyle reading. i also looked at the sx4. hatchback is TOO small. i like the sedan though. tire wear has been a problem for me. the original yoko geolander on the car were shot when i purchased it, cupping. but the geolander was a lousy tire and other brands and models also had issues with that tire. i'm running a bit of toe out these days instead of toe in and the tire wear problem has been reduced.

why did you remove the entire housing? Just to replace the o-rings for the heater coil and the thermostate housing? Seems un-necessary to me , if youve already removed the engine mount, and supported the engine on a hydrolic jack....? I'm doing this job tomorrow.....
@redshirt-scotty
@redshirt-scotty 4 жыл бұрын
it's next to impossible to pull the impeller off the housing while the assembly is in the car since it's next to impossible to gain access to all the impeller mounting screws. no engine mount removal needed for this job. inspecting o rings on a 15 year old car while a part is out? probably a good idea. thanks for watching. good luck with your repair.

I did a coolant flush-refill and the next day the car started losing all coolant from the water pump side. I have yet to check where the coolant is leaking from but from the direction of the leak I am thinking it's the water pump. I have to move the compressor to see what is going on. If it is the pump I do have a new one I had already purchased. What I am wondering is since there is little to no space to remove the exact part you replaced, I would like to check if I can remove the front and side motor mounts to be able to lift the engine In hopes that i can take out the pump without having to remove the part that has the thermostat on it. Guess i will try and see, or else i will follow your procedure.
@tomascordero2099

I am aware that the leak can come from the o-ring, in which case I would have to remove everything anyway. Still worth checking if the leak is limited to just the front part of the pump.

@@redshirt-scotty Lifting the engine almost worked but one of the screws was too close to the engine block and there was no space for any tool to fit so I had to do it as you did. In my case the hardest part was dealing with the screw that holds the heater pipe. Replaced the pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, O-rings, and gasket. So far so good.

i checked to see if i could monetize a couple of days ago. a year or so ago i qualified based on view minutes. now i neither have the followers or the view minutes. the best alternative pump vid to this one has 17k views in 4 years or over 10+ views a day. i need those views. i don't want to monetize the vw stuff but rest = you bet.

@@SladesVWBeetle it's tough. the young people who make up the bulk of the followers have short attention spans and skip a lot. make a longer vid and they skip even faster. i know some of my vw content is way out in the parking lot so i'll not have many followers. you're a good guy with a solid folksy presentation so that's step one in the process. step 2 is repeat views. that's really hard to do.

I honestly do....but I think people get on KZbin and skip through the videos as fast as they can. I don’t like doing that because I feel like I would miss something vital that I needed to learn.
