When we get older many people end up with arthritis, and it makes riding a regular bike difficult. So in '07 I bought a new Burgman Executive because it was a step through, had a comfortable seat and had decent speed, acceleration and handling. That step through design made it possible to ride, since the arthritis in my hips made it impossible to throw my leg over the bike like I could many years ago when I was younger. Everyone gets old, and many suffer ailments through the so called 'golden' years. So while it may not be cool for a younger person to ride a scooter like a Burgman, it does allow some of us older riders to enjoy many of the aspects and freedom of riding!

I agree. I have a Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 cc. I am almost 60 and thinking of getting a big scooter. We rode the Piaggio MP3 Wheeler 400 cc in Italy for a week. SO fun and so easy in corners etc. One guy with us had a Burgman 650 and he loved it too. I did not get to ride it, but I could see how fast it was. All the bigger scooters have really comfy seats now too. I don't have arthritis...yet... but I totally see your point about the step through.

I purchased the 2018 model after driving my 2008 model for years, and then recently sold it. I have driven every motorcycle on the market since 1965, from Honda's to Harley's. I average about 8 thousand miles a year, and that's all local riding for the most part. After having a total knee replacement in 2009 in May, I knew two things: 1... I would miss out a half summer of riding because I couldn't through my leg over my motorcycle, and 2... I've never give a damned what people thought of me. So I walked in to a dealer that I've dealt with for 35 years and he had a while 650 Burgman with 4000 miles. I told him that I wanted to try it out. He said "I've known you for 35 years and I know you wont like a scooter". I said, "we'll see". I took it out for 15 mines and LOVED it! It's SO fast that you wouldn't believe it. I've raced 3 Harley 1200s with stock carbs and beat them all. The first thing ALL motorcycle riders will do when riding the scooter is squeeze the clutch lever. WAIT! That's not the clutch! That's the brake! It's a habit that will take a good rider just a few minutes to get past. After that, the Burgman is without a doubt, the BEST two wheels that I have EVER ridden! No Harley, No Honda... NOTHING can beat it for comfort and rideability. I've said to myself many times over that years that I should have bought a Burgman 3 motorcycles ago! Anyway, I loved it so much that I bought a brand new one this past Spring. I dont consider this to be a "scooter". It's big, it's bad, and it's FAST. So if you're looking for something that's easy to ride (no foot controls whatsoever. Just hand throttle and hand brakes) super smooth and fast. Can tear up the curves because the center of gravity is so low, then I highly recommend the Burgman.

Here’s some truth coming from an owner of a 2008 Suzuki Burgman 650 motorcycle scooter. Now keep in mind I own a Harley Electra Glide Classic, a Honda Goldwing GL1800 and a Honda Reflex 250 motorcycle scooter. I enjoy riding all of them immensely. But the following information may surprise a few people. And just for the record, I have owned several other types of motorcycles in the past too to make this comparison. For the most practical fun, handling and overall performance, I prefer riding the Suzuki Burgman the most. The seat is comfortable, the cornering abilities are fantastic, it has great styling, is 100% reliable, acceleration is beyond unbelievable, braking is very effective and excellent night lighting to see the road. The cargo space is huge (take it grocery shopping sometimes) and it is fuel efficient. I took the Suzuki to the Black Hills and road many of the twisty roads out there to compare handling. It was better than anything else in a motorcycle category. Got a few strange looks from other travelers because the idea of seeing a motorcycle scooter design in the Black Hills was a little odd for them. I didn’t mind. It was great fun and never had to worry about shifting either with the automatic transmission. I take this Suzuki to lots of places. It’s great! Hope others get the opportunity to ride one someday.

This video is over 2 years old. Don't know how I missed it until now. In 2015 I bought a 2008 Burgman 400. My wife and I rode over 1500 miles to Colorado and back. The next year we went from Texas to Cincinnati and back. The next year, we decided why not. We drove from Texas to Washington State, down the West Coast to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and back to Texas. These bikes are super comfy, have great power (even the 400 with two up) and are loads of fun. I still feel like people are like, why a scooter, and don't give me respect? But I just remember how much fun I am having. We bought a 2007 Yamaha Royal Star motorcycle and went to Washington D.C. and down the East Coast in 2018. It was fun but not as fun, and on our way back through Texas my wife almost had a heat stroke from the engine/exhaust heat coming off the bike onto her. You don't get that with a scooter.

@@rudeawakening3833I never tried the 400. Sat on them many times. Just has much less heft than the 650. My guess is that it would get blown around more when passing trucks. Also, one BIG difference is that the 400’s CVT works by centrifugal forces. The 650 is electronically controlled. Translates into a much calmer ride when tooling around at lower speeds. The 400 has to wind up all the time. I had the BMW scooter for a while. It too worked centrifugally. Always wound up no matter how fast or slow your speed. The Burgman is the Lexus of motorcycles!!

Negative, scooters are cool in the US. They are not as popular in the less progressive cities or towns, but in the Carolina's, New York, LA , San Fransisco, but in Mississippi and Alabama etc. they are a bit slow as those places are in every thing else. Scooters are more popular than motorcycles in every other part of the world.

I think there's a lot of riders (especially the boomer Harley guys) who think because they got this huge expensive machine they take out when the weather's nice they can look down on people who ride anything different. I had a 650 Burgman just like that one. I have a biker bar 2 miles from my house. Whenever I got on the burgman, I would head over to the bar. I would wait for a Harley to leave and pull out behind him and pass him in front of all the guys out front. The guy would get on it and chase me I would leave him in the dust. Racing Harleys was my favorite pastime on the Burgman. I never even had one come close to beating me. I have owned many motorcycles and had my own repair shop for a few years so I can honestly say this is an unbiased opinion.

My father was a life long BMW rider, an avid touring rider. One day I came by the house and there, to my total shock was a 650 Burgman sitting in the garage. Actually, Dad hadn't been riding BMW's for a number of years. As time went on, BMW's got heavier, harder to work on, and a lot more expensive so he took to riding smaller, lighter machines. He settled on a 650cc single cylinder standard motorcycle called an MZ and loved it. So, as I said, I dropped by the house and there's this Suzuki Burgman scooter. Turns out, he was finding it harder and harder to swing his leg over the MZ, especially when he had it loaded up for a trip. He had heard about the Burgman, checked it out, and bought one. He rode that bike all over the US for the next 7 to 8 years and loved it. It was still a 650 so I figured, that the heck! One thing about it though, while it is definitely styled like a scooter, it's not a conventional scooter. Traditional scooters, like the old Vespas and smaller Yamaha's and Honda's have the engine and drive train built into the rear suspension and swing arm. Suzuki's 650 Burgman's engine and transmission are laid out more like a true motorcycle with the engine and transmission forward under the foot boards. The interesting part is the final drive. It's not a belt or shaft as you might imagine but a set of gears placed in order from the output shaft of the transmission back to the rear tire. It's strange but it works. That Suzuki wound up being my Dad's last motorcycle that he did any significant distance riding on. It was a good bike for him.

The Burgman 650 is a fine little machine and is much more capable than it's "scooter" persona would imply. I got to ride my fathers a couple of times through the years. I wasn't totally comfortable on it basically because of a lack of experience with it but I could see why my Dad liked it.
@kennolte58016 жыл бұрын
You're so right. By today's standards the Burgman is a relatively simple bike. The power-train layout is traditional and down low. The styling is more like a motorcycle with a relaxed position for the rider and passenger. That plus the fact that in almost all cases, just as reliable as a hammer. I don't mind doing some wrench time but as I get older, riding time is far more enjoyable than wrenching. One of the things that did sell me was the final drive. No belt, no chain and aside from an oil check on occasion, maintenance free. Gears spinning in oil. Whuda thunk it?? I have another sport touring bike again as my riding habits have again changed but the Burgman has a place in my garage still. I get a fair amount of ribbing when I ride on some benefit rides but when out of the group it takes a pretty good sport bike to get away from me. They ain't fast by any standard I know of but there are a lot more popular slower bikes out there. All that and I can bring home a weeks worth of groceries without even thinking about where to carry them.
@684046 жыл бұрын
Steven, don't feel the need to make excuses for him riding a scooter ("It was still a 650...it's not a conventional scooter...") It doesn't matter what he rode, whether it was a tiny Honda Monkey bike or a 2300cc Triumph. The important thing is he was still out there enjoying the road. You need to do a road trip on a big scooter. Not to prove anything to anyone but yourself. Riding a scooter (big or small) does not define your sexuality, just as riding a Harley doesn't make you tough. I'm proud of your father; he changed machines to reflect his ability. In doing so he managed to keep riding. More the power to him.
@Intrepid175a6 жыл бұрын
@@68404 - wow dude. You really know how to read a LOT of BS into stuff I never said. I wasn't making excuses for my Dad in any way, shape, or form. The bike he traded off of to get the Suzuki was a 650. Until he rode the Burgman home, I didn't know they made a scooter styled bike with that big an engine. I was just glad it had the same displacement range as the bike he got rid of. I didn't want to see him riding cross country on something 400cc's or smaller. It can be done, but I was a lot more comfortable knowing he was on something that had a little better chance of keeping up with traffic. And where in the world did I say anything about sexuality?? That's your interpretation. Please don't try to lay it on me. Given the overall tone of your reply, I think we're probably not that far apart in our attitudes in such things. I don't care who you are or what you ride. One doesn't have anything to do with the other. That you "ride," is the important part! My Dad rode as long as he could. I will always be proud of that. The part that I was even more proud of, was the fact that he was sharp enough to recognize when it was time to give it up. One thing I most dreaded was the possibility of having to fight him to get him to quit riding but that situation never materialized. He did it on his own and I will forever be grateful for that. I lost my Dad on December 15, 2016. Watching Srkcycle's video on the 650 Burgman just brought back a lot of great memories. That's why I felt compelled to respond here.

no matter how much my ex-wife tried, she simply could not get that whole clutch throttle thing down. I bought her a 250 Rebel, sent her to school. She passed the school. Rode that 250 rebel for over a year, and finally wanted to get a "real" bike as she put it. She was 6'1" and couldn't fit on a Sporty. So we went down to the Suzuki dealer and looked at the Boulevard C50T (T=touring). 800 cc, very well balanced and plenty of power without being crazy. At the time I had a Electra Glide Ultra and loved it most of the time. Until I was out in the middle of the desert somewhere and out of cell service and it would blow a oil seal somewhere. Always a real PITA. It was really getting up there in miles, and she was interested in the C50T but was whining that I had a Harley while she would be stuck riding rice. Now personally, I have been riding both HD and BMW most of my life. Except for my first bike, a 1978 Ducati 860 ( bday present for my 17th birthday. I think my stepdad was trying to get me killed). The Ducati was a great bike and when I went off to the army, I took it with me. It was stolen and never recovered on Ft. Bragg NC. I have been looking for a replacement ever since. Until then tho, I'll keep riding BMW's and HD's. But anyway, back to her whining. Since the miles were high, and I was tired of getting stranded in the desert, I suggested we buy matching bikes. I know, too cute. So she got the C50T and I got the C90T. Something really big enough for both of us, if she didn't want to ride her own. Never once did she ride on the back of that bike.... So a few day trips under her belt, and she was doing quite well for someone that still couldn't drive a stick shift car, we finally went on our first "road trip" San FranFreako to Reno Nv, up I-80. Visited with my sister and bro in law for a few days. Went riding with them a couple times and she did fine. On the way back home, we chose hwy 50 back. Mostly sweeping turns until you get to the town of Placerville. Then it was basic open hwy again. We decided to stop in P'ville to get a bite to eat. As she took off from the end of the off ramp and needed to make a left hand turn, she tagged the far side curb and laid it down hard! Apparently all those high speed sweeping turns, she forgot that at very low speeds, you actually have to turn the handle bars to initiate the turn. Bent front rim, lots of scrapes and crap all over the paint, slightly bent right handle bar and really tore up the chrome on the pipes. I remember all this because I had to replace it. She claimed it was the clutch/throttle thing that threw her off. She was thinking about that, instead of how to make a turn. Whatever. We made it home without further incident. Then I spent the next few weeks repairing all the damage that was done. She never got back on that bike. I had 2 very close friends that wanted to go for a several day road trip. One had the Suzuki M109, the other had just sold his old Goldwing. So I suggested he ride her bike. Off we went. on day 2 as we were coming into Reno, the friend riding her bike, said he could hear something rattling. Afraid I might have missed something in the repairs, we went to the local Suzuki dealership to have it checked out. It was still under warranty so why not. Turns out it was only the key cover for the gas cap lol. But while we were waiting for service, I see these Burgman Scooters. Oh and for the record, the wheelbase is the same as a Road King. I took a good long look at the Burgman. Since it is an automatic, and the executive model has some very cool features like electric windshield ABS etc. When we got back, I suggested this might be a way to get her back on the road, without having to worry about shifting. Just roll the throttle on and go. Nothing to worry about. Just enjoy the ride. Also, there are tour clubs all over the US that tour ride on these things. When I said scooter, she immediately said no. But I convinced her to take a look at one. Off to the dealership we went. Thankfully there was a really nice candy apple red one there. She agreed. So I came down the next day, with her bike, made the deal and rode it home. Getting on the freeway in the Bay Area is an insane feat. Most of the on ramps are in areas with lots of steep hills, and the on ramps are blind, until the very last second. So you can't see if you have an opening or not. So when I started on the ramp, I just rolled on the throttle with all it had. What I didnt realize until I got to the top of the ramp was my speed. I had hit 94 mph, going uphill, in a very short distance. Smooth as glass ride. Windshield up it was like riding a BMW RT. Nearly no wind at all. Well I had no trouble merging into traffic. After the break in period, 600 miles I think it was. Got the service done and took it out on the highway to see what the top end was. Reports from Suzuki said it was governed at 130 mph. They were correct. They are amazing scooters!!! Same fuel injection system as the GSXR's. One of my favorite things to do was to pull in behind sport bikes and watch them freak out because they couldn't pull away from me. While it might seem an uncool "bike", if you get a chance to ride the 650, exec or not, try it!! you will be impressed! Bob in Germany

Then he took it for a test drive. When I bought a new scooter, he bought my old one off of me. Scooters are a hell of a lot of fun and that is why he fell in love with the scooter. Personally, I use the scooter for taking my dog for a ride. My dog sits on that little platform on the floor. He sits there between my legs and he is so use to the scooter, that when I go around a corner so fast and on such a steep lean angle (I have had the rear wheel slip out from under me), that my dog does not even budge. Always love your videos, Sean! Especially appreciate the Words of Wisdom. Not an owner of a scooter, but have ridden several nice ones. The operative word for them is “fun”, I believe. It opens up the fun of riding to so many people who would be intimidated by shifting, or a bike with higher center of gravity ... I know my sister loves to ride scooters, and she would never dream of handling a cycle. Also, you mentioned the “economy “ leaves - that is a major benefit of tooling around on a Burgman or the like - the mpgs can be amazing - they just go and go on a gallon of gas ... Peace and blessings to you, my friend!

The Big Suzuki scooter is just to get you from a to b to c with minimal fuss. It doesn’t have the sound or anything special but it gets you there and makes you wonder what the fuss was ....

I'm not a religious person myself, but I appreciate your 'words of wisdom' segments. Also, do a Triumph Thruxton R.

I had a Burgman 650. Rode everyday until I could no longer use the center stand , because of knee surgery. I do miss it. Put 68,000 miles on it with not going wrong. My only complaint is the small gas tank.

Kevin Hannon what was the mileage per tank and miles per gallon? I love scooters and ride my Zuma every day
@kevinhannon61466 жыл бұрын
@@opichocal I got 35 miles per gallon. I rode mostly interstate speeds. For a tank of gas 170 miles per tank

I ride a Stratoliner and a Shadow because they are mine. If I run across an available Burgman it might be mine too. I call all my rides a scooter, a bike, my ride, and what anyone else thinks of me is actually none of my business. I'm over seventy and group riding is not for me anymore. Looking at some other bikes tail is boring and being the leader is too much responsibility. That BurgerBike looks tasty enough for me to bite on one. Imagine not worrying about a clutch or gear selection and a visor that goes up and down to suit my needs. Good video Sean,,, no wait,, FANTASTIC video SEAN! THANK YOU!

I got a used Bergman 650 not executive though but have to say one of the best things l ever rode on 2 wheels. I love the automatic transmission nice in town. I got into a race with some Harley’s coming back from the coast of NC l out ran them all except the first guy who was on a Royal Star.

These have been around for years in Europe. You see them in all the cities. Hence the folding mirrors.
@SikterEfendi3 жыл бұрын
"Not sure why you need that." You obviously never filter or lane split. My '07 Burgman's width shrinks by NINE INCHES (from 38" to 29") when I fold the mirrors. It makes a world of difference when I'm filtering between dozens of cars parked in front of a stop light in Toronto. I know that if my handlebars go through so will my entire bike, with room to spare. Also, estimating the width of the gap is much easier when my width is exactly where my hands are. I had a smaller scooter before and it was great, but Burgman Exec. beats it in dense city traffic hands down.

I was riding with my friend who has one of these. I laughed at him. He passed me, super fast, on a twisty back road. I looked down at my spedo and I was going 100 mph. That convinced me.

What impresses me about your shop is that you do nice things for people who can’t possibly return the favor. Obviously you can lose money by doing favors, giving surprises and being good guys. Unlike an old joke you don’t make up for those losses with volume. You seem to be able the thrive and be there to back up your buyers purchases that’s a principle not many companies understand. I know this is an older video but it has me pumped about learning to ride a scooter and buying one for my own use. Is a scooter considered easier to ride? I’ve got a feeling that you’ll be selling a scooter to some guy in Arizona in the near future.

I have the Burgman 650. Great bike. Smooth, fast enough, comfortable and relaxing. I drive on the freeways in SoCal all the time. It's 650cc and it moves pretty good. This is the SUV of motorcycles with a huge trunk under the seat for 2 bags of groceries or a case of beer with ice.
