2018 Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive - Long Term Review

I'm 62, riding a motorbike since I was 19. I have a back wear and I have an older Suzuki Burgman 650 from 2002. I have driven a lot of heavy motorbikes, but this Burgman is the first that I can ride that I have no problems with my back. But also in the driving experience, it is not far from an older Goldwing.

I had a 2009 Burg and what a great machine! It WILL, as you say, do 110-115MPH per speedo which is pretty much correct standard and not the usual 5+- mph deviation of most Asian bikes. EASILY 100mph for nearly everyone (ummm, so I'm told :). The point is though is that it can cruise all day at highway speed. It also gets there QUCK and will rival street bikes. I was complimented on my scoot by some very talented young street bike riders as to its speed AND it is just a 650! It is the most stable machine I have ever ridden and I bought mine after breaking my neck/back ending my 30 year police career. I could not get my leg over a bike for a long time BUT the step through and comfort of the Burg was perfect. I know you are quoting DEALER costs for maintenance, which IMHO is VERY HIGH and way to SHORT of interval. It is NOT what my excellent dealer even came close to and my insurance agent LOVES the Burg with a very low rate of around $125 /yr with full coverage. They may not look like it BUT they are really easy to work on and the body molding comes right off with a removal of a couple bolts. The engine is UNDER you and opposed so it is smooth with a super low center of gravity making it so stable that low speed maneuvers are easy. I took a riding course for instructor prep with it and it was so easy to do. It is automatic OR you can use the thumb shifter. It also has a really nice/smooth SHAFT DRIVE! It has a TON of storage under the seat that lifts up as a TRUNK and your fuel is also BEHIND you and low helping handling. AND when it rains you are completely dry (while moving) by the front fairing which does a great job even protecting your arms from getting wet. The electronic windshield raises/lowers instantly to keep the wind/rain off you. IF I did get some drops on my helmet visor I would just drop the windshield for a second, the wind blast would clear my face shield and then put the windshield back up. I bought it used in 2012 with low miles from the said dealer who had it traded in by original owner for a new Burg. I only say this because the dealer actually BOUGHT MY BURG when I traded it in for my 2014 STROM 1000. I bought the VEE because I was recouping well at the time and wanted to be able to get down some fire trails, etc in my travels. I SHOULD have kept her but did not have the space BUT when my leg will not get over the saddle again, I'm getting a BURG again!!!

Did you say "shaft" drive? My '03 had a CVT gearbox with stacked gears all the way back to a gear drive for the rear wheel. In fact there were three different oil changes required for servicing the engine/drivetrain; The engine, Gearbox (CVT) and final gear (rear wheel). Not as bad as it sounds.

"I've used it a lot more than I thought I was going to do". That is such a common response to owning one of these, I've heard it many, many times. It is just so practical and useful. I use it as my primary transportation, almost every single day. Grocery store runs. Back and forth to work. You name it. And then every summer my brother and I tour cross country, thousands of miles. 500 miles in a day is common, and I arrive relaxed and comfortable! The price can be a little eye-popping, but I've never paid retail for one. Plus, you really don't need to buy anything else. It's a compete touring package. Ready to take you to the four corners of the earth.

Very nice review. I live in Taiwan and already done 30000km with my 650 Burgman. Here heavy traffic in town (23M people, 13M scooters), lots of mountains (300 pics over 3000mt). Frankly speaking, best bike ever... really multi-tasks and so confortable.

I have owned a 2008 Burgman 650 Exec for the last 8 years. Rode it almost exclusively for the first 3 years, and put 27K miles on it during that period. Touring ability? No problem. I added a pair of Givi panniers and a Shad top box, giving it Goldwing-like capacity, with plenty of room for a large duffle on the pillion seat if needed. Did a 500 mile ride one day, no issues. It has since been replaced as my main ride by a Triumph Trophy SE, which is one of the greatest touring bikes ever assembled. But each time I hit the road on the big scoot, I can’t help but get the famous ‘Burgman Grin’! I do agree that cruise control is the missing link to complete the bike, although backlit switchgear would be great as well (even my Trophy doesn’t have that). And the bike is sneaky fast! Anyone who knocks it, obviously hasn’t ridden one. Thanks for a great review!

I have a Goldwing and have had a Burgman, I think the Burgman is the nearest to a Goldwing type experience of any bike. In fact sometimes I wonder why I don't just get another Burgman, it's much more practical and nearly as comfortable.

@@RufusCapstick I've actually got the money to upgrade from my 2007 Burgman to a Gold Wing (automatic tranny, of course) and I'm thinking now that I would be better off just to upgrade to a new Burgman. Maybe I should go rent a GW for a day and see if I can fall in love with it. Even if I purchased a GW I think I should keep the Burgman. I just don't see myself hopping on a GW for a quick run to the store like I do with my Burgie.

Bought my AN650 Burgman at the beginning of 2015 and still have it. It has been the most reliable and best ride of any bike I have had (since I started riding in the mid 70's). Totally agree about the protection provided when riding in the wet as I used to wear a suit to meet clients with an all in one over the top. I always turned up presentable in the worst of English weather. This was the reason I got the bike in the first place, to be able to ride to work across long distances on motorway and inner city rush hour conditions anywhere in the country and that paid off when I was the only thing moving (with other bikers of course) for 20 miles or more in the jams (love the ways those mirrors folding makes me as thin as any other bike...and after time the buttons become second nature). The only point I would make with you is that you didn't mention this bike is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Flicking a switch turns the bike from a sleepy automatic (relatively speaking) into a very nippy manual (change up/down is by button like grand prix cars and when you stop you automatically go into neutral). The other button you didn't mention is the sport button which is rather like a kick-down on a manual car... press that and the bike changes down and you discover exactly how much power was hiding under the fairing for that get out of jail moment. I am retired now and the bike still suits me because (as you said) its cheap to run and great for everything else non-work related.

I own a 2018 BMW R1200 GS Rallye as well as a Yamaha Tmax 500 and I know I should not say that, but I love riding the scooter more. It´s easy handling, the smooth an relaxed riding, the storage capacity, the wind protection. I don´t miss anything, not even the power, which is more than enough for relaxed and fast touring. The Burgman 650 stands head and shoulders above the rest . I have toured to Portugal , South Spain, Scotland and in the last 2 weeks Berlin . 1600 miles riding in 4 days . All luggage [50 ltrs] stored under the seat . Top speed during the trip 110 mph . Kept up with everyone one the trip including a Triumph Rocket 3 . What more do you want ?

The "crashiness" of the ride is due to small wheels increasing the effect of surface defects and that the lowest suspension setting being for a super soft ride. Turn it up a couple notches and the handling tightens up a lot.

After 11 years and 76,000 kilometers, my Burgman Executive is still my favorite motorcycle. Great in town, you never have to get back to first gear at every stop. Lots on integrated secure storage. Good weather protection included. Smooth power delivery. Comfortable on the highway. Very user friendly. My friends and I always got burned by our bikes when I first got into riding (hot engine parts and exhaust). You would have to try really hard to burn yourself on a Burgman. I don't like the digital speedo on mine. It is the only bike I have seen with a gear drive to the rear wheel. It is hard to push, since you can't take it out of gear. It is easy to push when it is running, but since you can't take it out of gear it is not safe to push while running. I have three other bikes; SR185, CX650E, and an XV1100.

Fantastic review, as was the other video. I have had a Burgman 650 2007 model for 7 years and some 80,000 miles in that time. Its an incredible ride for me here in Spain after years of London riding. I just purchased a newer one a few days ago as I don't think there is another bike that suits my needs. I use it for touring and days out hiking in the mountains and countryside , where i can take all my kit and stow helmet , jacket and trousers under the seat. After hiking I can stretch my legs for the home ride. An awesome ride. I have to add that I was crying with laughter at your last three negaative points about the looks, price and size. I have the older Burgman which is even bigger looking. I love it, its a tank. I see other bikes being blown about in the winds here and my 249kg tank just cuts the wind. The price is higher than a normal motorbike but in the end the service is cheaper. I rememeber paying 180€ for my Michelin Anekee minus vat and mount. The Burgma cost about 120€ all in.

Pretty much how I feel about my Burgman. One thing you missed, the power button is good for engine braking. I use it all the time coming to a stop sign. Also in the twistys.. that power button is really great and braking is minimal due to engine braking.

I owned one of these from 2007-2014 when I sold it to move to Germany. I wish I had left it in a storage unit because I'm going back home now and still miss it. Of your negatives, the only one that actually makes sense is the lack of cruise control. There had been many times I wish Suzuki had added that. As for it being too car like, you mean with the extremely readable dash? Or the fantastic headlights? Or maybe the side fuel door that prevents you from overfilling the tank, but stores the fuel at the bottom just above the drivetrain, like a car? Adding to the fantastic low C.O.G? Yeah I would take those over a top heavy motorcycle, or being in a cage stuck in traffic. The idea that they are expensive, and instead you could buy a cheap car.... almost none of us buy two wheeled machines because they are cheaper than cars. I just spent $24k on a 2020 BMW. Instead I almost bought a $30k Harley. Bike prices, especially ones that can perform on the highway like the Burgman 650 are crazy expensive these days. As for the suspension and slinging it through the winding roads, maybe you didn't have the preload set right. Roads in California and Idaho are not the best in the world. In fact I would say they are quite a mess most of the time. Idaho because of the weather, and California because .... well just because ;) With the preload set, I've never once come close to bottoming out of getting a wallow from a poor suspension. In fact quite the opposite. The only bike I've ever owned that even came close to both the ability AND the comfort doing it was the BMW R1200R. They both corner like a dream and can flick back in the other direction almost like there is some kind of psychic connection rather than any input I had in the bars. They are amazing. As for the large wheelbase, it is almost identical to the Harley Road King. Which is part of what gives it the stability it has. And yet it can out corner and out accelerate a Road King, albeit while not looking as cool. It can take most other bikes out on the road, and in the traffic, stop light to stop light, perhaps the only cars that might be able to keep up are million dollar supercars. Top speed by the way is 135 miles per hour. And that's only because Suzuki chose to govern it electronically at 135. If you have a friend at Suzuki somewhere... well ;) Unless I was really getting on it, normally my fuel mileage was around 60-65 mpg combined. The best I ever got on it was 72 mpg while on a ride from California to Idaho through the desert back roads of Nevada where I was keeping around the speed limit. So Highway mileage may vary ;). As for tour riding, one of your plusses, There really is a crazy amount of space on them. Something most people don't know that maybe should have been suggested, the backrest is removable and replaceable with a top box from several companies. I chose a Givi, but one that was color matched and more of a square profile (as much as Givi seems to be able to do) that didnt look like a hovering UFO. So if you're two up touring, which it is amazing at, and you swap out the backrest for a top box, they are fantastic. They are touring clubs all over the US that cross country ride the Burgmans, both the 650 as well as the 400's. The only time I ever got uncomfortable on it, was after 13 hours in the saddle. The shape of the seat and the firmness of the foam used started making my butt and lower back numb. Thank you Corbin seats for never letting that happen again. Oh, the first thing you mentioned as a negative, was the fiddly buttons on the right side, while working the throttle. There are no buttons on the right side to fiddle with while riding except the windscreen height. The top red button is the on/off button for the bike. Underneath is the start button. I assume if your riding, you already have it running. Then there is the windscreen button. Everything else is on the left where it should be. I also agree with you that with the amount of buttons over on the left, some kind of backlighting would be nice to have, but in a very short amount of time, you get to know where everything is. Besides in most cases, once it's on, the only thing you might mess with is the high beam switch, or the turn signals. Everything else is pretty much play time. Whether or not you want to shift manually and the up-down buttons. Or the power/default button which only changes the shift points on the transmission. Which allows it to accelerate even faster, like that was necessary. lol. And then the horn button, which hangs off the bottom like most bikes these days. I don't know. I have always had a really hard time finding any faults to the Burgs. They are just amazing bikes for what they are. Technically a long distance commuter scooter with crazy easy controls, especially for those that have issues with clutches and shifting. And yeah, those folks still exist out there, which was the reason I bought the thing in the first place back in 2007 (an ex-wife had the problem, not me. I've been pulling clutches for almost 50 years now). Just a little side note here, you want to drive a sport bike rider in the 600cc class crazy? Pull up behind them in the fast lane. When they accelerate to get away from you, roll on the throttle a little more. Keep doing it until you hit that governor, or go visit your "friend in the service department" at Suzuki and take it up to 150. Shhhhh I didn't say that out loud.....

I set mine up with a set of Wilber’s rear shocks and progressive springs in the front. It is an absolute weapon now. I have done 13000 Klm in the past 12 months, while my poor 2017 BMW R1200RT has done 970 Klm in the same period. Does that tell you something 😉

It seems to me the only downsize to a Maxi Scooter is crash guards. I may be wrong. But, a ordinary tip over, then lots of expensive plastic repair. The reason I went with the Honda CTX 700 DCT. By far the easiest bike to ride in all my decades of riding. We men, at least this man of a certain age is through with mammoth motorcycles.

I'd like to establish my bike/scooter owning credentials before providing my thoughts on the Burgman. In the last 10 years I have owned a Yamaha XV1100, a Piaggio MP3 400 both sold and I now have a Kawasaki Voyager 1700 and a Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive. I bought the Voyager while I was still working and my daily commute was 200kms. In the 2 years prior to retirement I racked up close to 70,000kms and since retiring 5 years ago I have added close to 20,000 more. You would be right in assuming the Voyager is my main bike. I keep the Suzuki at my holiday place and in the time I have owned it I mainly use it for short runs to the shop or around town although I have take some longer distance trips on it. The Burgman is an excellent scooter at home on the city streets zipping in and out of traffic and lane splitting (if that is legal where you live the fold in mirrors are welcome). It will hold its own at 110km/h the national speed limit in Australia although I once took it on a back road and ran it up t o168km/h before I decided I was out of my skill and comfort zones. The CVT means twist and go and it pulls away at the lights quickly so the lane splitting is a good idea. I find full auto mode is best but there is a manual mode if that's what you want. There is also a power button for extra revs when in auto mode for over taking. I have never used either of these features as I find the bike does what I need when I need it without more fiddling so I can enjoy the ride. The ABS brakes with 2 discs up front and one on the rear bring the machine to a quick stop. The parking brake provide a bit of extra security when the bike is on the side stand. There is plenty of information provided to the rider via gauges, read outs and warning lights and a good throaty sound form the pipe. At 638ccs it is a big engine by scooter standards but not when compared to big bore cruisers nevertheless it is meant as a touring scooter. This is where the electrically adjustable windscreen is a bonus - it provides excellent wind protection at high speed taking pressure off the chest, arms and shoulders but can be lowered while riding for more airflow once you enter low speed areas. The on board storage both in the dash and under the seat is good for carrying a few groceries or two full face helmets plus phones and other stuff in the dash compartments. I would recommend if you budget allows that you remove the pillion back rest and add a top box - this will give you a small suitcase size removable box and still give the pillion a back rest. My one accessory that I have not fitted but suggest you do if you plan to do a lot of open road riding is a throttle lock or breakaway cruise control. The riding position is comfortable but the grips are hard and holding the throttle open to keep a constant speed is tiring in the right hand. A machine that is fun to ride as easily at home on the city street as the open road.

I had a 2007 Burgman 650 that I put 25,00 miles on. It ran perfect up until I decided the buy a brand new one this year. I think the new Burgman looks better in the rear end, but that's where the likes stop. Dont get me wrong, the Burgman is a top of the line Scooter, no matter what year it is, but here's my thoughts on the two: I liked the 2007 better than the new one for these reasons: The 2007 was wider, which gave a little more protection in bad weather. For some strange reason, the 2007 was smoother. The new one has a bit more vibration. Not in the entire bike, just the engine. Both bikes suffer from an electronic fuel gauge. What this means is that you really have no idea who much fuel you have left. The new one however does a better job of giving you a better idea. I took some gas with me and allowed the Scoot to run out so I knew the exact millage I could get from a full tank. Now, I set my Trip Meter for every fill up and watch that, no matter what the gauges say. The old bike was a much better creamy white color, while the new one is "ice box white". The old bike had silver wheels, while the new one has horrible black wheels, which makes the bike look very plain. I put silver pin striping on mine to break up the monotony. As far as the electric mirrors on the new bike: That's just something else to break. The old bike had a serious electrical issue with the plastic contact in the key switch. Suzuki issued a recall on it. Not sure that helped a lot, but with all the extra electric options on the new one like heated seat, grips, movable windshield and mirrors, I hope that Suzuki re designed the electrical system to handle the load. As mentioned, this scooter costs as much as a cheap new car in the U.s. .. about $11,000, so to own one, you must be a serious lover of this machine. I am.

Can we have her on more often to review the back seat? ;) My riding buddy started off with the Yamaha family of X-Max scooters (went through 125, 250, 400) and he's now a happy owner of the T-Max 530. Sacrificed a bit of luggage space for a faster ride. He's been supper happy with all of them and toured on them a lot (even the 125). I always envy the amount of storage he has at hand. Underseat to lock the lid when going sightseeing, small bins in front for highway cards, rain gear, spare gloves etc. He's always ready first and needs to wait while I finish faffing about with my top box and jacket pockets. Also the wind protection on these things is really great for long highway stints, there's plenty of room to sit in a couple of positions and the rain is not a problem. Also a lot less bugs on your lid and jacket. Not to mention the thing is stupid easy to ride, the low centre of gravity is like magic, it just stays upright on its own, full lock turns are child's play.

Thank you for a very fair, balanced and comprehensive review, TMF. The Big Burger has moved on a lot since I owned one of the first UK ones, but it's always been a mile-shrinker and has always had bundles of comfortable get-up-and-go. The 'crashy suspension' can be adjusted for preload and I wonder if yours was simply set too low. Certainly, mine used to handle securely on fast sweepers - two-up, too - and never caught me out. Being very tall, I installed a Givi screen and never had reason to complain again. I dare say that you could do this to the electric screen too? Pity you didn't show the cargo hold in all its glory. It is absolutely massive and for some folk it would be the ultimate selling point, I'm sure. No Real World motorcycle comes anywhere near to the BB's load-carrying ability straight out-of-the-box. I'm currently looking to swap one of my bikes. I took a long hard look at a VStrom 1000 and a KTM 1090 yesterday but I was seriously attracted to a new BB as it stood menacingly, gazing down on the surrounding commoners. If I can make a bit more room in my garage alongside Herman (my old R100GS PD) then who knows? Great review, TMF. Thanks mate! Safe roads 👍

That's not really a fair comparison, is it? I am not sure about the prices in Europe, but here in Japan the Suzuki is 1 million Yen and the Yamaha is 1.4 million Yen. The Suzuki is, and is only meant to be, a scooter, whereas the Yamaha is also meant to be like a medium sized sports touring bike. I think the price difference makes a direct comparison of the two bikes less valid. At this moment I am torn between the two you mentioned for my next bike, moving from the superb 2013 V-Strom 650 ABS. More money but for something that will also thrill me a bit, or less money for something that will take me and my wife in complete comfort on days out and short touring breaks over a few days.

I have just done my cbt. Got a vision 110. The idea was it’s all I want. Work to and throw, cheap as chips to run and I love it. I watch all your videos as I think yours are one of the best. Now I’ve had my bike 2 weeks I already want to get my test done and I’m torn about what bike I want. I wish there was not so many choices it make it hard to decide what bike and riding style suits me. I think I’ll end up with the garage full the way I’m deciding. Anyway rant over. I borrowed a Burgman 400 while my V-Strom 1000 was being serviced. It was great, although I am 6 ft (183cm) tall and it feels a little cramped to me. It is also a little harsh over the UK’s potholed roads 😖 The 400cc was surprisingly quick! And during my time on the bike, it returned 77mpg 😮

i have a 400 and quite like it. the 650 no doubt has more balls. the 400 is not so bulky. it handles like a 150 but has more muscle. i'm not so sure i want a 650 because of my age and slight build. if your ok with speeds up to 70 mph. the 400 is the better deal. above that and i would get big burg.

I had a massive accident at work when 2 tonnes of steel gate collapsed on my, smashing my ankle & leg along with many other injuries. But the problem is I can no longer change gears on a conventional bike. It's a bit of a silver lining as I was introduced to the Burgman last year and I love it! Mine is an 07 that had been dropped. Minimal damage (scratches and broken indicator). However, time uncovered a few more faults. The front mud guard is too short so the tyre throws up all manner of cack into the radiator and mine was pretty much scrap. East End Radiators of Glasgow hand build a brass & copper replacement for 250 quid. What a difference! To keep my new radiator in tip top order, I bought a beak for the mudguard for less than 20 quid. Looks good too. The other problem I had was the ABS lamp would be on more than off and sometimes the handle would vibrate upon hard braking. Turned out to be a rear wheel bearing. 20 quid from a local bearing supplier & fitted myself. My bike is 11 years old with 26k on the clock so all in all, it's done well. I get my mate to do the heavy stuff and servicing on his ramp as I have problems kneeling and lifting. But for a fat bloke with damaged limbs, this bike has saved me. It got me out of the house and feeling human again and my 9yo son loves it too. We're not long back from a two day trip where we did fishing, ate ice cream, went to play parks and all round the city of Aberdeen. It eats up the miles whether it be motorway or twisty highland mountain roads. I highly recommend the 650. FYI the 650 was built from cutting a 1276cc Hyabusa in half at Suzuki... It is affectionately known as the "half-a-busa!" It's detuned for reliability and is epic reliable. BUT you MUST change the CVT primary pulley stopper bolt at least once a year or two years if you do low miles. It gets chewed at the ends and if not changed it can allow the CVT to self destruct. But an awesome piece of Japanese engineering at it's best. Love this bike.

Great review. I did own a 2006 Honda Silverwing back in 2019, and absolutely loved it. Great commuter bike and was able to ride to work in the rain and did not need to wear rain pants, even with the spray from the highway. I got rid of it after that season as I couldn’t shake the stigma of a scooter. Scooters are not popular here in Ottawa, Canada. I regret that decision and am looking to get another maxi scooter. I am leaning towards the Suzuki Bergman because of the bigger engine and larger wheels/brakes.

I bought one while holidaying in Italy - 2100 Euro/40K km on the clock. After having some oil changes done, and the air filter, this thing carried the wife and I all over the place - 10,000 km's in 3 months ! It had a 45 litre top-box, and with the room under the seat, we went for more than a week at a time on our explorations. The only setback was the previous owner/s had not followed the service schedule, and the belt in the transmission failed at motorway speed - just coasted to a stop - but destroyed the internals of the transmission. 3600 Euro for parts to repair a 2100 Euro bike !! Brilliant machine - we had it up dirt roads, on the Autostrada, and every back road the GPS took us, and it was comfortable, quick, and being a scooter, we parked it anywhere and no-one got upset. Is there one in my future ? Very strong maybe !

What a wonderful review, I have had three of the 650 Burgman's and think they are a fantastic machine. I regularly took mine down to Andorra and the Pyrenees in France . I was the only guy out of 15 motorcycles that had the scooter (if you can call it one ) and was alway's up front with the best of them. I am 70 now and thinking of getting another.

2018 is not a long term review. I've had one of these since 2011. It's been mostly fine but is falling apart now at 52k miles. The bike is now at the end of it's life, needing complete rebuild and much work doing. This is my long term review: *Things that are great* : Folding mirrors, brilliant traffic beater. Press a button and leave the cars for dead through narrow gaps. Engine is bullet proof. Good power and completely reliable. Manual gears at the push of a button if needed (more economical and easier to drive at low speed) Ample luggage space. Fairly maintenance free. *Things that suck* : The weight is ridiculous. Feels like a Gold Wing. dropping it is a no no. In the snow you will not pick it up on your own. This affects your brake pads, as you will go through them as it takes so much to stop it. Brakes: These as usual with Suzuki suck bad. They easily seize up in winter and require brake cleaner solvent spray on them regularly if you don't want want nightmares. They often bind without this care and will affect your MPG. At their best they never quite let go of the disc fully so constantly wear out. Wheels: These are practically impossible to clean. I have older ones to you which are embossed alloy. I gave up many miles ago. Even Wonder Wheels is too much hard work for it to be worth it. My next bike will be something lighter with better brakes, like Kymco AK550 which I will test ride soon.

I love my burg 650 but yeah the brakes do seize in the cold, the service interval is insanely short and putting air in the rear tyre is just terrible. It really needs angled air filler nozzles as standard. I have about 70,000km give or take in mine and I will probably have to get rid of it this year before stuff starts to get unreliable. It is 15 years old so to be expected.

@@SurmaSampo I second that. I had a slow puncture in the rear which carried on when they replaced the tire, so it was always a pain until I put some tire weld in it. I've gotten rid of it now. It was going to cost £4k to put right all the things that were wrong with it. I got £800 for it, and I was happy with this since they didn't notice the oil leak and all the problems that were diagnosed when I tried to get it fixed. I ended up with an AK550 and I'm so glad I swapped. As much as I miss the luggage space, the electric screen, which the AK could really do with, my new bike is so much more fun and easier to ride.

Around town and one up I think that it's a bit lower geared for me which means that I feel it at lower revs in a higher gear than I would expect to ride at. This can be overcome by putting the bike into manual mode and changing gear with finger and thumb but its not too uncomfortable to just let it ride in a higher gear. That certainly makes it more economical as well as I got 70 m.p.gallon at reasonable speeds out of town. 60 to 65 around town. The gearing is not a problem two up for touring or on main roads. It balances itself out nicely except the smaller wheels do not take to the potholes or other rough surfaces. Its got a top speed reputedly of 110 mph and in POWER mode it will do 0 to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. not a lot can keep up with it. It's totally responsive and can keep up and surprise many a motorcycling mate. Have had mine for nearly 3 years and got it due to arthritic legs letting me down [ result of an RTA on a motorbike 30 years ago ] Last say.... it's a great bike worthy of consideration. It holds its price well in the market place and it's a wolf in sheeps clothing. One to just enjoy.

I'm going today, 11/3/18, to buy an 03 for $1,500. I've ridden a couple and really really like them. I've been wanting one since the first ride. I have 5 BMW bikes among the 8 bikes I own. But I have a feeling the Burgman is going to be my go to motorcycle. I bought a Honda Helix after I rode the Burgman, I really like it, and I have used it quite a bit, but it's not a Burgman. I will say it is probably the most comfortable bike I own. Ergometrically it's damn near perfect, there's nothing I would change, the bars are perfect. One thing I don't think I'll like about the Burgman is the rear brake location. On the Helix it's operated by the right foot, which is where it should be in my opinion. At times I've found myself reaching to pull in the non-existent clutch lever. When this happens on the Burgman, and it will, I'll be grabbing some rear brake.

Good! It'll take ONE time pulling on the rear brake lever before you figure out how wrong you are. THE one complaint I (EVERYBODY) had about my Helix (other than "only a 250") was that damn rear foot brake. You'll be glad you finally have plenty of room for your right foot. Now go get the Burgman, stretch out a bit and enjoy!

Very comprehensive review. I wish the magazine ones were this good! I recently tried this model and I got pretty much the same conclusions as you did. My only "but" with the bike was the seating position. The feet forward arrangement takes some time getting used to, specially coming from regular bikes, as it's more difficult to unload weight via the feet and everything falls on the back. Which by the way requires a pretty accurate adjustment of the back support. Also, my wife being petite at 1.56 m, was not not that comfy on the back as the seat is 50cms wide and "felt like being in a gynecologist chair". Too bad, because it fits the bill in every other front. Particularly in terms of providing engine brake, essential in mountain touring. No other scooter can do that. Otherwise one is being left with only brakes going downhill, not very reassuring.

The problem is the market in each country, I'll give you my example: I live in Mexico, right in the border with the US, in Mexico most of the bikes you see are 100 to 200 c.c, and are owned by working people, and those bikes are around 600 dllrs US, if you see a bike bigger than 300 c.c is a BIG bike and in the US that's the entry level bikes or even considered for women, so I think the problem is what the society dictates in each market.

Maxi scooters and the cheap 50cc scooters are like night vs day. Yes the maxi costs more. But it is nothing like the little 50cc. They have far more power, range, and load capacity. Fuel injection, better suspension, and tires. Electrical extras like heated grips, seats and powered windscreens. Trip computers, anti-lock brakes, traction control, and much stronger cvt transmissions. Not to mention more materials. Maxi scooter prices will come down some, if more people would give them a try. Like cell phones, an increased market will bring economies of scale along with more competition for sales.

Then there are distributors, like if you want something special, like Ural, Guzzi, Enfield, KYMCO or even Piaggio, you have to travel because dealers are few and far between in Canada, outside major cities, or go UJM again, if you buy local. I'm waiting to see if Yamaha's 3CT gets here. So far it only has a 300cc engine, but like Juan said, 300 is considered big in his market, though one YTer here tours the world on Honda Cubs or their clones because he enjoys the views and he says, parts are everywhere. Yet the 3CT is over the bar for travelling on a 400 series highway {250cc-but why would you, no scenery and a danger of highway hypnosis-go scenic and enjoy the picnic stops}. The 3CT will give Piaggio a run for its money, if only for the fact of dealer access and looks like a clone of Kwang Yang Motor Company's CV3, except ATM, it is not known if KYMCO is going to use the engine developed for the AK550 scooter.

I had as a 2000. I put around 10 k miles on before I upgraded to a Gold Wing. Put a trunk on, and enjoy all the extra room. One trip was 478 miles from. San Francisco to San Diego. I did one ride up to 170 kph. The bike kicks ass, and is super comfortable. Women complemented it all the time. Buy her!

Good long term test. 👍 Perhaps the benefit of it being like a car in design, etc, is to attract car drivers and give them additional benefits of easy parking, filtering, fuel consumption, protection, etc. Mentioned the fuel consumption but think the fuel range was missed. Also, covering any touring luggage accessories available, e.g. panniers, top box would be handy. Would panniers cover the petrol cap?

I agree with Michael - if you look at the Burgman as “half a car” then it makes much more sense if you are coming from the “car side” of the divide than the “bike side”. This is a much less intimidating step into the world of bikes for a car driver than say the z900. If you live in or around a big city and are regularly stuck in traffic on your commute - this is a much better option if you decide to swap to 2 wheels: - Integrated, invisible lockable storage - Great weather protection - No gears or clutch to distract you so you can concentrate on bike control, other traffic and directions (this alone probably halves your chance of an accident as a newbie) - low centre of gravity and foldable mirrors makes filtering less scary, which if that was your motivation in the first place (avoid traffic) makes huge sense. Car > Burgman > z900 makes more sense than z900 > Burgman > Car

I own a 2006 Burgman 650, and adore it! I was told that Suzuki will no longer make a 650 Burgman, so hang on to your 650s out there! I had to part with my 2018 Burgman; I liked the better body style, and the higher grade black plastic they used, but hated the new dashboard. I had, and many others, had issues with seeing it clearly. All in all, these are amazing machines. Great review! :)

Thanks for the review. It was interesting to see a bike I am considering being reviewed in the UK, not only because I am from there, but because living in Japan where road speeds are 1/3 lower, I can hear how the bike handles at speeds I would do here on a quiet road with few police cars - the motorway limit here is 100kph (62 mph) on limited stretches and 80 kph (50 mph) generally. You mentioned Suzuki's official MPG figure, but did not confirm it by measuring it properly when filling up. That would have been helpful. You said the bike had a stack of storage, but details of top-box and side cases - if you can fit them and what is available - would have been good. After all, no-one tours without them on any kind of 2-wheeler, do they? It would have been good to see how easily you can filter through traffic, rather than seeing how easily you can ride on a quiet town road. Of course each rider must decide whether he/she can filter at any given moment, and it's not to be expected of a 650 scoot' as it is of a 150. A great review over all. Very useful, thanks.

FYI: I have Givi saddle bags, 22 liters each, and top case of 47 liters. You can also add a tunnel bag up to 20 to 25 liters and top the top case with a luggage rack adding a 30 liter case on top. This gives me about 20 liters of storage for tours and my wife over 180 liters. In all seriousness, for touring I have about 205 liters of enclosed hardshell storage, it can spoil you quite easily. In practice we leave much storage available so we can place our helmets, leathers all in secure storage while we explore on foot.

Even the Suzuki Burgman Street 125 rides well and is very comfortable. I had two 125cc and two 150cc bikes before having this one. This is by far the best scooter that I've had when it comes to comfort and fuel economy. It is one of the best selling scooters here in the Philippines.

Nice review but you didn’t show under seat storage and right hand switch gear on the move? Start /kill switch/hazards and screen...so screen is the only one used when moving....small point I know. Also petrol cap it’s easy when you line up the arrows...even with gloves on !

Excellent review and, as always, very amusing. I am 73, although I hate to admit it, and now considering a Burgman 650 for recreational riding. My BMW K100RS 16v may have to go - a pity, after I've done so much work to refurbish the machine but it's something of a beast to move around on foot. (Guess I'll have to find out how to use the engine lol). No, but you know what I'm talking about. However, and this rather surprised me, the Burgman 650 is actually the heavier of the two! Some figures:BMW K100RS 16vPower = 100hpWeight = 518lb (full tank)Suzuki Burgman 650Power = 55hpWeight = 558lb full tank)Which means that the power weight ratio of the Burgman is approx. half that of the K100RS. One great advantage though, is step-through mounting. No more having to cock your leg.

I had a 2nd hand 659 Burgy 14 years ago and kept it for 4 years. I went touring on it with my, then, 15 year old Grandson down to southern Burgundy. Mine did not have all the bells and whistles in those days, but I had a Givi 52L top box on, so we had roughly the same space under the seat and in the box. We did nearly 1500 miles in the week and had no problems and averaged 55mpg. We cruised between 80-90mph on the autoroutes in great comfort. Your bike is obviously a much more modern version than mine, but have they removed all the electronic gearbox options and the power button, which you made no mention of? I might add, that I had a number of other bikes at that time, including a Blackbird(which I'd had flat out a few times), and i thought the Burgy was just a great bike and still think about getting another one. You're right, the handling at speed through 'twisties', takes a bit of hanging on to, BUT it's a scooter and I loved it. By the way I loved your MT10 review, and I've had mine for 3 years now. Utterly besotted by it!

So...I was really enjoying your review, until you got into the negatives. Sure, every motorcycle has them. But, as you admitted after you shared your impressions of them, you still found this particular scooter to be to your liking. Sorry, but I don't follow any of yiur negative impressions...and as a motorcycle tourer on a bike that cost over $22,000, this bike is a blast! As much as I would love the styling of a classic Vespa, nothing even comes close to the comfort we have with two up riding, lots of storage and unbelievable handling. I purchased my used 2013 Burgman 650 in late November with 1926 miles...it sat through the winter, having only put 200 miles before I put it into storage. I'ver ridden over 2000 miles since mid April and LOVE it far better than any second car I could possibly even consider owning for well over 2X the amount I paid for the Burgman. Passionate you say, YES! As for your initial review...thumbs up! But, honestly, your negative comments don't resonate well...and I can't imagine that anyone who is looking for the perfect maxi scooter could do any better than a Suzuki Burgman 650!

I aim to give balanced reviews when I can, as you say, no bike is perfect and I feel I should point out the negatives as I see them as well as the positives when doing these long term reviews (I get fed up of watching reviews where reviewers only gush about bikes they've been riding).....

Isn't the competition for the Tmax more likely to be the Kymco AK550? Both are sporty scooters that mimic medium sized sports bikes just a little. I think the Suzuki is merely a very comfy scooter, having borrowed one - and I am thinking of getting one.

The 4 competing big maxi scooters are 1; BMW C650gt. 650cv 2; Suzuki Burgman 650cc 3; Honda SilverWing 600cc 4; KYMCO MyRoad 700cv In the US, the Honda and the KYMCO are no longer imported, so you will have to find NOS or used.

I have a 2010 Burgman 650 Exective have a Trinity Trike Set on the back. It is by far the best bike I have ever had. Bukris comfortable, easy to ride great in the rain as you don't get very wet, just a great bike with never any issues

Im 25 and I ride an burgman 650 and a SV1000 and a Gixxer and if i had to choose one bike to to it all it would be the burgman. Whatever you do with it, shopping, commuting or riding through the twisties it does all of it. You can easily keep up with almost everyone who is not a complete hoonigan and you will at first get some comments from other bikers if your ride with them the first time. That changes when you pass them in the corners :'D I like the isolation from the weather the most. You can ride almost the whole year without getting cold, have a lot of storage and a lot of power. The biggest annoyance is the small 15 Liter Fuel tank. I had a scoute before which had 17 Liters and you felt like you never needed to fuel it up. With the burgman and around 5-6l/100km it feels like i ride from fuel station to fuel station.

How about the Burgman 400? 3 grand cheaper, and more than enough to take on the motorway. Also if I recall correctly, the service costs would be much cheaper, and less to go wrong with simpler transmission.

Yeah, the 400 has a simpler single cylinder, but is a conventional scooter and a part of the swing arm. I myself bought a used 400cc Yamaha Majesty last February, and haven't regretted it since!

TMF the Suzuki bosses haven’t upgraded the styling since the 2013 model. Seems that they should have made some changes. I actually think that they should have made a tall rider option. At 6’3” the bike was cramped my knees always just touching the dashboard, my 34” inseam also made the seating position punishing after 75 miles. Since you have the ear of Suzuki please offer them my observations and ask them to make these changes for future TALL RIDERS. 😉

Same issue on the Honda Xdv. I'm the same height, most scooters are cramped and I've ridden quite a few. With the weight all in the rear, on rough roads I find scooter tend to pummel you butt and your lower back gets hammered. It's just physics, the engine is over the back wheel on most scooters. I live in Thailand, rough roads are the norma and because of that, I'm selling my Honda Forza and getting and adventure bike.

Pomoz7 I got rid of the Burgman a few years ago after only 18 months and 5000 miles, bought a BMW F800GT, then switched to the R1200RT... happy camper now.

@@Pomoz7 The engine on these Burgman 650's is not over the back wheel but under the "tunnel" between the rider's legs, thus centering the gravity low and slightly forward--attached to the bike's frame and not the swingarm like the other scooters you are referring to. Unless a person overloads the under seat storage, the weight of this bike, as reviewed should be nicely distributed.

Very thorough review. Not many reviewers show the machines in the bad weather as they're usually shot in Spain or somewhere exotic like that so well done for that I,d love one of those, so cheap to run and would be great for running around town. Fantastic night time lights. I even like the look of it.
