Most folks don't realize that under normal circumstances valve clearance decreases as the miles add up. This is due to valve face to seat wear. Checking the valve adustment at regular intervals is key to preventing burned valves. Good video.

Thanks for the video. 2 1/2 hours is good for the first time, took me longer. It is a pain in the keister to adjust them accurately. The valves do tend to close up, because the heads are aluminum and the valve seats wear, causing the valve stem to move up and close the gap. If any C50/Volusia owners read this and your bike doesn't idle like an angry sewing machine, but is too quiet, get your valves adjusted. The valves can potentially get burnt and it's not cheap to rebuild those engines. When I did mine I bent the feeler gages in an upside down J with a 3/8" 90 degree tab at the top bent inward. Then I scooted the tab under the adjuster with a long screw driver. This made it much easier to assure accuracy. Also, unless you can elevate the bike on a stand, put the seat bake in place and sit on it while doing the work. Maybe next time I'll do a video.

Thanks much, you made it look so easy. I would not be afraid to do this job in my garage at home.

Got mine done finally, thanks for the advice. I found the specs for the valve clearance. 3-5 thousands for intake 7-9 for the exhaust. Hope this helps someone else.

Hi Adam! thanks for the vid. just did the rear cilinder. inlet needed no adjustment but outlet had no gap at all like you said. made me hesistate and i thought i did something wrong. seeing your vid made me see that it's plausible so i went on. now waiting for bloodflow in my legs again ;-) and then i'll do the front cilinder.

Great video, I am working on mine today. It is the same way. Zero clearance and the adjustment screws are a pain

Hey Adam Great video thanks for sharing. I bought my C50 new in 07' and only had the valves adjusted 1 time during the first recommended time. I now just hit 31K Miles on it so it is beyond due for a Valve adjustment. I hope to attempt this job this New Years Weekend. Take care! Brian

Took me the better part of 2 days to complete the Valve Adjustment, change the plugs and detail the bike top to bottom. Thanks for helping me accomplish this tedious task!

Some audio of the proper sound of the engine would sure be helpful, especially for someone who's not sure if they need to make an adjustment or not.

Question for you... can you describe the sound it made before you adjusted the valves? Thanks
@adamamundsen31577 жыл бұрын
Jazz King it had started to make very little noise, as the gapped closed on the valves.

@ponca6226228 жыл бұрын
I was going to do this but the timing cover plug had oil coming out of it. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Pulled the plug and oil came out I don't think oil is supposed to be in there. Any info would be grateful.
@adamamundsen31578 жыл бұрын
It is normal for oil to be there, it is where your clutch is at. If you do the valve adjustment after you have drained the oil you would not get any oil out, you could also put a block under the kickstand which would lower the oil level enough to remove the plug.
@ponca6226228 жыл бұрын
+Adam Amundsen I thought I had a problem but after leveling on the jack no oil come out. Found the timing marks. What is the gap on intake and exhaust?

Adjusted mine twice, just to make sure. She sure does tap....A LOT. Called a Suzuki shop and they said it should not tick/tap. I've never know an engine to tick WHEN the valves are properly adjusted. Who do I beleive?

Adam how would you find tdc on this model?
@adamamundsen31577 жыл бұрын
Charles Kubiak I believe there is a mark inside if you take out the plug on the front of the left side case, but I simply pulled one spark plug out and then turned engine until compression stopped building and that is top dead center.
@pgmac17779 жыл бұрын
if you never done this, watch someone you trust do it first time. hint... if it ain't tickin' your valves are stickin'

They do on all motorcycles, unless they have hydraulic adjuster to do it for you. Yes it's weird to hear at first. lol

Fairly useless when you don't show the procedure regarding timing marks on the flywheel etc.
