Bought my 2018 KLR last summer after riding dirt bikes much of my life. Thought it might be to tall and to big for the woods, but it was a pretty easy transition. Love being able to mix trails and pavement in the same ride. No more loading the bike up to take it to the woods. It inspired me to start a Channel and make some videos myself.

I just purchased a GS650 and it's 5 inches lower so you really notice the difference. Also the gas tank is under the seat so the weight distribution is different. Please stay tuned for that vide. Don't ask me how I know a 11 hour walk descent off a mountain with a rib injury can happen. If wearing a broken-in pair of Moose Racing ATV boots in white you'll appreciate them more My DR650SE? I added bark-busting protection afterward onto my still bent handlebar and paid for front wheel repairs.

Nice comparison. DR650 was my go to for long distance rides for over 17 years so I can't speak about the KLR. DR650 is narrow enough for safe lane splitting in California. I carried a tent, a one gallon spare tank stuck to the back of a Home Depot tool box bolted to the rack. Carried spares, clothing, all behind me, so nothing stuck out on the sides, so no drag. For mods, I got a Shorai battery, an HD Mikuni pumper carb, a GSXR exhaust, a fork brace and a screen, and I cranked up the rear spring. I still have it, it has never failed me. The small tank forced me to take welcome breaks as even with the optional gel seat, that's about all you could ride at a stretch. I would ride between California and BC in one day at times. The whole installation did act a bit like a sail with Santa Anna cross winds on I5. An amazing bike that's never let me down.

Thanks for the comment. What an awesome list of upgrades. I haven't heard about the gsxr exhaust. Gene is already in Mexico city now with this DR. I saw him off in Baja (if you're interested the footage from that trip is in the Honda nc700x review). So reliability is the single most important factor when it comes to ADV bikes. I just returned to Europe where my klr has been sitting for 3 years, bought a new battery, changed the oil and coolent and brake fluid, and the bike started no problem. I love that about the klr. I'm glad you had a great experience with it (the previous commentator disagrees). Cheers. Nik

Very helpful vid. I am more convinced that DR650 is the best option for me. Mainly because it weighs a lot less, up-gradable tank (with a few mods, you can make a tank bag fit), easier to maintain, and when Im not adventuring. I can pretend its a dual sport around town.

Very tru - that's a good analysis. Have you considered the DRZ400? Lighter and more capable off road, yet still fairly equal to the 650? Please stay tuned for that review as well - I recently had the chance to get to know it. Best of luck and thanks for the comment.

I prefer the Giant Loop soft luggage. Riding atop rear finder (with my addition of a half inch nylon sheathed steel cable with fixed loops at both ends), an American Padlock secures the 30 liter carrier to the passenger foot peg mountings.

You guys are lucky that Suzuki still sells the DRZ 400 and DR 650 new in the states... here in Germany the DR 650 was sold till 2000 and the DRZ 400 till 2007.. I tried finding a DRZ 400 SM but I’m not willing to pay 5000€ for a used one. Now I’ve been trying to find a DR 650 SE (1996-2000) which also is nearly impossible...

Wow - that surprises me considering how popular these bikes are and how well they sell for the companies. Here too they retain their value quite well, and sell immediately. In fact Gene was the first responder interested din the bike and it sold in a day after advertising. Perhaps the market is saturated with the GS650 (which I purchased yesterday in order to test and review, so please stay tuned) Thanks for watching and please consider subscribing to be alerted when the new review comes out. Pegasus Motorcycle Tours & Consulting hey sure I’ll leave a sub👍🏽 i live between Mainz and Mannheim (those are the 2 big cities close by). They are still very popular over here but due to emission standards which neither the dr 650 nor the drz 400 passed they were discontinued (sadly). A GS650 is nothing for me though :D.. I just turned 21 and I don’t consider myself old enough for a touring bmw hehe :)

@@TDM0802 Nice to have you here! I am the current owner of three BMW and I gotta say the maintenance requirement is a bit much for my taste. For new riders I would definitely recommend other, smaller, lighter, simpler bikes. That seems a bit stringent - but good on EU for being ahead of the game on mitigating the climate emergency - writing from California whee the sky is red and the air smells like smoke from the whole 1000 miles of coast. I currently ride the DR650. I have no intentions of selling it, as I've pretty much got it where I want it, insofar as comfort and personal serviceability goes. I would, however, like to get a KLR650 before they're all sold out, for commuting and short road rides. It would allow me to turn up the dial on my DR more for the dirt. As it sits, my DR is a 70% dirt, 30% road bike. I'd like to crank it up to 90% dirt, as that's where I enjoy riding. I really enjoyed this video. Thanks.

Kentucky Justice: Keep your DR as is and add a dirt bike to the stable. I have a KTM 300 for serious dirt riding, and my klr for everything else.

Thanks for that. I'm glad you found the video valuable. I really do thing between the two that the Dr is a better bike for serious adventure riding. But have you considered the drz400 if you want a more dirt oriented bike? They keep their price high, people love them, and they sell in a week. Better suspension, much lighter, comparable power...? @@edfeten4724 very true. A proper dirt bike would be so much fun. The problem is that getting to the dirt inevitably costs many many more asphalt miles at 60mph. Even the drz400 is screaming during prolonged stints of highway. But highways is inevitable, even when we try to avoid it like the plague. In my 26k mile. Tour of north America I don't think 5 of those were on highway, but you hit Texas or Nebraska and it's 90 miles straight west for a few days even on the country road. The Dr650 is the best compromise On the market... Under 5 grand. In my humble opinion. Thanks so much for participating. Much appreciated. Nik

@@edfeten4724 That's a thought, but I want to be able to take any of my bikes on the street (legally) and in the dirt. I'm not what you might classify as a prepper, but sort of. My hope is to be prepared for anything and have fun while doing it. Thanks for your thoughts. I appreciate your post.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours You hit the nail on the head. I want to be able to ride my bike(s) on the trails, and on the interstate highway if necessary. (I do try to avoid the interstates though.) The DRZ is pretty much maxed out on an interstate, and it's light enough to get blown off the road by a big truck. That would be a constant fight on an interstate. A DR is difficult enough. I won't own a bike that's not road/dirt capable. Thanks for your post. I appreciate your thoughts.

My motorbike history involves starting in the 1980s in New Zealand on a Beneli 50cc, to a CT125, XL 250, XR500, a GSX-R 1100 and a few others... then I had an accident in the 90s and havent been on one since. Now, I'm in Canada and looking at getting back into the bike scene. Everytime I think I've made up my mind on a bike, a new video comes out and then I start swaying another way.... I think Im going for the DR.... Im older, I like the older style, it reminds me of what I saw as a kid and wished to have when I was older. No more KZbin until I buy it.....

Thanks for the message, and welcome back to the riding community. You wont be disappointed with the DR - although it will be a different beast compared to what you have owned. I recently purchased a BMW GS650 and it has a few amenities stock that you might enjoy, like ABS that one can shut off, low seat height (30 vs 35 for the DR), the gas tank being under the seat so the weight is low, and heated grips for you up in Canada - please stay tuned for that review, and best of luck searching. Great video. Very informative in many respects. Both bikes are a force to be reckoned with and it doesn't really matter which one you take. You will encounter hurdles to overcome with either. I rode my DR650 on a trip from Wales, uk to North Africa and it managed very well. Even riding some of the Sahara desert and flooded roads where I had to to be helped across the overflowing river crossings. I see that you've ridden a lot of the same roads as me too. I sat in that same spot in Arromanches looking down on the Mulberry bridges from WW2. Were so lucky in this age to be able to have easy access to the world of adventure travel. The Isles still remain on my to do list - one I am planning to do on my KLR with the wife (I actually got her nearly convinced that we must make a special trip just for the Moto TT race). I agree - we are very fortunate these intl trips are doable now a days - I was 23 when I started living on the bike, with 3 grand in my pocket. Luckier still for those who can make it a lifestyle. Great review! So spot on in regards to the safety aspect, I think is the first time I hear it in a bike review and people riding GSs worth 20k may be thinking WTF, a KLR being flashy? You were spot on bro, I did Venezuela to Argentina, crossing brazil and then back on a KLR (with my wife). On South America anything above 150 cc will get peoples attention, I made it safely though, maybe because my KLR was all black and not red :). No mechanical issues in the KLR during the whole trip. Changed chain, sprockets and tires in Argentina and nothing else.

Thank you for that - I agree, this is such an important factor that gets no mention. I lived in many parts of Brazil, in fact two of the most dangerous part in Maceio and in Rio, and I got to know the inside of the country as well far West, and Mexico is my second home (wife and her family) so I am well aware of the security issues throughout LatAm. I am glad at least with this video folks who are considering a ride down there now can have more factors to consider. Your odyssey sounds amazing - with your wife too - that would be a dream. My wife is pregnant so no more moto for her but luckily she understand what riding means to me so no restrictions on my end. I just picked up a. I had a KLR 650 like yours. I took it across the country several times. Superslabs and secondary roads. It's a good bike that is more road orientated than dirt. It never let me down. With the 6 gallon gas tank I would pass heavier cruisers that had to stop & gas up. It will do single lane dirt roads. It does it all but doesn't do any single thing well. I put ammo cans on the back and could pack my KLR like a mule. The long seat helped for long trips because I could sit next to the tank or I could move back and sit next to the rack. A expensive European bike road with me and he was locked into a single position which meant he rode less miles than me due to saddle soreness. The KLR was a great bike for me.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I'm currently not riding a motorcycle. I've had 3 bikes in the past: an old 70s Honda 500, Vulcan 750 and the KLR 650. I'll get another bike soon but I have a goal I'd like to meet first and I'm close to meeting it. I've been reading articles on various bikes and I'm intrigued. Recently, (this week) I took a trip from Central NY to VA and some of the vehicle drivers completely ignore safety and the lives of others. So, I think my next bike will be secondary roads mostly. Maybe a cruiser on the lighter side with a bit of performance.

I have put 17000 miles on a 2011 klr 650. My brother owns it now. 20000 miles on my 2009 klx250s and maybe 1500 miles on my other brother's drz400s. The klr went everywhere I pointed it. It was a very comfortable bike. I contemplate getting a dr650 for the weight issue but I keep coming back to the comfort of the klr and that my brothers 16 and 17 years younger than me would watch in awe of where I could take that huge, heavy beast. Great video. I will be watching more. I live in Utah and love the White Rim Trail and Moab.

This is one of the best comparisons between the KLR and DR that I have ever seen. The Rocky Mountain ATV comparison is the only thing that comes close. I have been comparing these two bikes for a "commuter" for a new job that is 40+ miles down a rough dirt road, and another 150 miles to the nearest city with a grocery store. I've made my decision with the DR, simply for the bikes ability to handle rougher off road conditions, but I applaud the fair comparison between the bikes with from a veteran rider that has been in most conditions the average ride would encounter. @@pegasusmotorcycletours I hadn't considered the wind. To be honest, I haven't taken any long rides on my DR yet, which is probably good since I don't even have a windscreen. I live directly next to a mountain so most of my riding happens up there.

I prefer the DR, even on slab. It's smooth even at the top end. I bought 3 used tanks for my DRs for less than 50% of new cost...2 IMS 5gal and 1 Safari 8gal. Wind doesn't bother me on the DR, but I'm only 5'8". If you need a screen, ScreensForBikes makes a nice looking one that works, but many people just cut and bend wastebaskets or lexan for cheap. The DR can be shaved to around 320lb curb, built to around 55WHP, and equipped with fully-adjustable suspension for relative peanuts. DR valve adjustments in BFE don't require shims. The only advantage I see in the KLR is spaciousness for a big rider or for carrying a passenger. The DR is basically a smooth and chunky, early-90s trailbike...that can slab a passenger and luggage all day at 80MPH. The KLR is an ADV moto...that's missing a much-needed cylinder.

@@RKmndo Very true - I don't quite know what to expect regarding "what comes next" after the KLR - but if the GS line is a tell tale than the new 310CC might indicate a smaller, more efficient ADV lineup. I am not sure. Kawasaki doesn't have an ADV bike past the KLR, and I don't think they want it competing with the Versys.

I totally agree, and I have owned both. The DR is smoother at speed, more stable, and runs up to 100 mph without feeling like you are hurting it. On fast dirt roads the KLR is twitchy above 70 mph and the DR is totally stable at 90 mph. No matter what you do, the KLR is still a fat pig. The DR has better ground clearance, more travel, lower center of gravity, and way lighter. The DR does not have a vulnerable radiator and a bunch of plastic to break, and the valve adjustments are easy. Just put a good seat and bigger tank on the DR and the contest is not even close.

I live in Guatemala and had many bikes, I have ridden all over Latin America. I just got my hands on a DR650. You are correct, I liked it because it is not flashy like other dual purpose bikes. you can ride it in more places and not worry about getting anything stolen. If he is riding bellow the boarder hard panders are better to lock down things. here we use liners to take everything out. Tell him to take a chain in case the bike is left on the street to lock both tires down. You are also correct, we are the same height and what I immediately noticed is that those handlebars a freeking low, especially if you have to stand on the bike for a while. I have done touring here on dual purposes and Harleys this bike will definitely be smaller than what I have ridden, but definitely more versatile.

Great review. Have been settled on buying a 2018 KLR650 but your review of the DR interests me. Most of my riding will be on highway and mild off-road so will likely got for the KLR.

This is Cole, I know almost never see these two compared head to head. But these in the XR 650 L are pretty close tell me the XR is a more dirt version Nichelle are is a Morse Street version in the DR is kind of in the middle of the two, a little better raking trail to make it a little smoother on the roads and I think the gears are stretched out a little more but the KLR is even more so with a little more faring on it and a more comfortable seat. All are OK off-road but the balance varies for doing more distance and on road riding the killer is your choice if you want something right in the middle the DR is great and if you want something a little more towards the off-road side the XR 650 L is your choice but they’re all very similar middle of the road dual sports the different manufactures just went a little more to one side or the other. The thing I love about these is the old simple technology all of these bikes will do 100,000 miles if treated properly they’re all very comfortable easy to ride easy to own low maintenance and built very tough and you can’t go wrong with any of them. These sort of pave the way from Enduro to dual sport in their predecessors and away from dual sport to adventure touring thanks to the KLR and some of the early BMWs do what is one of the hottest segments in motorcycling today on the adventure sport arena. The Kahler and the Honda Transalp are the first bikes I think of that took dual sporting to touring with machines capable of long distance riding but still able to go off road. I think that’s why they’ve had to keep selling them for so long they were innovative in their time but simple. I would like to see them update them a little with better brakes on some but I can’t get rid of them these bikes just keep selling and people love them for a reason. I love some of the new bikes but let’s be real, if I’ve got a KTM 890 adventure and some friends say let’s go to Alaska next week in the middle of summer I have to think about it with the KTM and check my maintenance schedules and do a ton of work possibly, if I’ve got a killer I just fill it up with gas and change the oil and I’m ready to go on a several thousand mile trip pretty much any time. The KTM 890 venture is a much better bike but it’s not gonna go to many places detailer won’t go and it’s ridiculously expensive and it’s an attention whore that needs a ton of maintenance and it’s a pain in the butt to deal with. If I’m rich I can pay somebody to do that for me great but realistically for 99% of the people out there a killer is going to be fine and if you really want to boost the performance Put some money into a rear shock, progressive makes a great set up for the front and back of the KLR suspension add some Loctite re-jet put some holes in your box and put a pipe on it to get a little more power out of it and it’s a pretty capable bike for a few grand as opposed to 20 or 30 for some of the bigger more expensive adventure bikes. I get it technologies cool but in the real world practical writing there’s a lot to be said for something very simple something easy to work on something that you can have forever. The cost to find ratio and cost to mileage ratio can’t be beat on these bikes you’re never gonna get 100,000 miles out of these new bikes that tell you they have to be rebuilt after 25,000 and computers are cool and all but The more stuff you have the break the more you have to deal with and anybody who works on any kind of old vehicle will it be a boat a car a truck or a motorcycle can tell you that electronics are a pain in the butt when you double and triple the amount of electronics on a bike The best thing you can do is sell that sucker before it gets too old because it’s gonna be a nightmare to keep running. Simplicity adhesive ownership are two things people rarely consider that’s where both of these bikes in the XR 650 L shine they’re incredibly easy and they’re pretty much always ready to go

Hundred percent agree with you here. The XR was one of my favorite bikes of all time, the main problem was the 39 inch seat height for me. Have you seen my review of it? I recently picked up a drz400, Its a fantastic bike I really love how nimble it is and I can commute and ride it hard for a week and it only takes 7 liters to fill it. That being said it doesn't feel like a mile muncher, I haven't taken it out for a long trip yet as it's not ste up yet but even going down 3 teeth on the back sprocket it's just not geared to sit on the highway all day, I know people do it but one of these 650s is far more suited to it. On a trail though, the 400 for sure, like you said you cant beat the weight advantage.

I also picked up a DRZ and am very eager to put some bags on it and see how it behaves as an ADV bike. I hear the 15/44 combo front and rear sprocket helps. I am also surprised how light and nimble it feels. IT gives so much more confidence on dirt, and makes one want to explore deeper into the woods. There are lots of dry river beds in the desert west of San Diego and each smaller stream creates a slot canyon that gets narrower and begs to be explored. I am very eager to take this bike there, but getting there is pure 80mph highway desert straights. Stay tuned for a review of it shortly and thank you for chiming in - much appreciated.

@@ridenm7748 Sub-fender removal, helmet-lock removal, passenger-peg removal, bar-weight removal, upper chain-roller substitution, mirror sub, reflector sub, signal sub, bar sub, taillight sub, fork-spring spacer sub, 520 chain/sprockets, etc. There's a lot of weight that can be pulled off, even on such a "naked' moto as a DR650.

Excellent review. I have a DRZ400e and I am kiting out for travel. I agree with you about the reliability of these and they are simple to work on. My partner was traveling on KLR650 when me meet and got sick of watching me scoot over soft spots only to sink when he followed. I have had to make some serious modifications as I am only 5ft but at least now I can touch the ground. I look forward to watching more

The GS is a good 5 inches shorter and feels lighter as well. I would highly recommend you consider that bike (the BMW made a bike comparable to the DRZ - it's called the Challenge - 650 engine but light, and has ABS and EFI. I have owned both, and in my opinion, the DR easily beats the KLR. Everyone says the KLR is better on the street but I disagree. The DR is way more stable at speed. The KLR seems to get blown around more. The DR engine is smoother at 80 mph than the KLR. And the DR will run up to 100 mph when passing a semi and it does not seem to bother it like it does the KLR. And there is no mistaking the fact that it weighs about 80 pounds less than the KLR. Yes, the seat sucks on the DR but is easily replaced as is the tank. More suspension travel, more ground clearance, and yet a lower center of gravity and way lighter. On dirt roads the KLR gets twitchy above 70 mph, but I have gone 90 mph on dirt on the DR and it is rock solid. The valve adjustments are easier on the DR, and the oil cooler is much less vulnerable than the radiators on the KLR. Plus the KLR has a lot of plastic to get broken. So for me, I would get the DR, change the seat, change the tank, and totally forget about the KLR.

I agree with you that The weight savings on the DR are too significant baking the bike superior even with the need to upgrade a few things to make it your ready. I can't say I find it more stable at speed though.

Great review coming from someone who is obviously experienced. My choice is KLR and I cant wait to get my hands on the new 1 being released.

Grea4 choice. I own two presently amd the one in Europe never let me down even when it has been sitting for a long while. I am waiting on Kawasaki to send ke the new one as promissed to get to know so please.cosnoder s7bscribing to get notifoed when that review drops. Hi. I just came across your channel & subscribed. I have a KLR650 which I bought about 18 months ago and which I'm enjoying (now that lockdown has eased). I have snagged my foot under my Happy Trails panniers, that's a little scary and I can see how it could lead to injury. In the future to replace my hard saddlebags I would like to buy the Mosko Moto luggage system, they are amazingly high quality and very well thought out. And the fact that Mosko Moto is NOT made in china is a huge plus.

When I was young (1992) I had a DR 650 SP44 (Kickstarter) with which I drove more than 60,000 km through Europe. Then, 17 years ago, I sold it for little money. Half a year ago my son (16) got a KLR Duke 125. His old man could not stand still. Last week I bought the exact same model with 55.000 km, that I used to have. It has a lot to do with memories :-), but the DR is also a great machine ...

It really comes down to preference they're a both fantastic bikes and will tackle any terrain. I own a klr650 gen 1 and it has never let me down, and having a long range fuel tank with a reserve helps but you can easily buy aftermarket tanks for the DR so it's not a biggy I've seen Klrs with over 100,000 miles and still going strong.

Those Tusk panniers look like exact copys of Overland Solutions ones which are amazing panniers and have been around for 20 years. I've done 420,000 miles with my ones via 68 countries

Awesome video! I recently bought a 03' dr650 that had a list of upgrades but the only thing the guy didn't do was the suspension, ive put about 2000 miles on it now I'm 6'1" and 250lbs, and want to upgrade the suspension, what would you reccomend? I am a college kid so budget is in my mind! Thanks for the awesome video!!!

Hey there, glad it helped you out. I would say a suspension upgrade for you would be extremely beneficial. One of the most popular brands is Progressive - the springs actually are progressive, true to their name, and perform much better. Depending on where you live, there is always a mechanic specializing in moto suspension, typically for avid sport bike track riders, so I'd start there first. Seriously awesome video with a healthy dose of the truth of adv riding. Weight matters, suspension travel and ground clearance matters, most all adv marketing is BS by greatly exaggerating the bikes ability, and no one cares what your bike looks like as much as you do. It matters how it performs for you and the riding you do!

You’ve got yourself another subscriber. Good luck growing the channel and your business. I ride trails and forest service roads on an 09 TE610. It’s as heavy as I’m willing to go due to the fact that I like trail riding and the TE doesn’t take away my confidence off road. I’ve also done the WABDR and plan to do more BDRs in the future and also The Tour of Idaho. Not really looking at month or year long rides at this point. I rode my Z1000 across the US back in 09. It was a great experience but my focus is more on my professional life now.

Great video. My 2p. Never ride off road with gs rider as they always load them to the gills and are a liability. Second I made a flat aluminium plate holder for my custom made large but narrow soft bags and it truly is the best compromise. Loads of crash proof luggage and bike still narrow. As for shade I always ride with an umbrella stashed on my bike. It’s not just good for fixing punctures in the rain!

242/5000 I really liked the warning of which bike to ride in Brazil! Yes, KLR would draw too much attention. Here, DR was commercialized until 98-99. Fortunately, DR is not "targeted" here. The trail bike that draws the most attention is the Yamaha XT600 and XT660.

What are your thoughts now that Kawasaki is releasing the 2022 KLR650? I know your projects are the DR400 and BMW650. I'm going to be upgrading from a CRF250L and looking hard at the new KLR650. I'm a new rider age 62. I was sold on the T700, but came to my senses that I would be spending a lot more money on a bike that I could never come close to riding it as hard as it can go.

Thanks for your question - the new KLR is good looking, and it's great that they made the much needed improvemente (EFI, doohickey, fuel gage, etc) but it remains heavy. I have reviewed the 2nd gen KLR solo quite extensively in this video, and in other's comparing it to the DR650, and BMW Sertao - I hope you find this KLR specific review more helpful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX65qaisrpx0bZY Glad to have you here - thanks for participating in the conversation. I am more in favor of much lighter bikes and have been getting to know my KTM SMC and Honda XR650L. I also released a video in the first week of this year showing what exciting reviews are coming in 2021 including the review of the rare and amazing BMW G650XChallenge - so maybe you find a bike in this list more suitable for your needs. Congrats on getting into the game - for new riders the T700 is a lot of bike with excellent capability,but I would suggest a simpler, lighter, more easy to get to know bike - the new KLR is a great option for you (price point is excellent) you get a lot of bike for the money, and if you don't plan on doing any hard dirt, it might be the one! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5W0Yn-DdqucjKs I hope to hear from you in the future. All good points👌 My 2011 klr has now 105000km and is going to be getting a 685 rebuild. After the first year I got used to it's height (32inseam) and put the longer dog bones and heavier spring. Has a yz250 fork conversion, crash bars, and barkbusters. The classic carb mods and a Trailtech Vapour dash. With the suspension upgrade it likes jumps and the odd log hop. Not MX jumps but just enough to make me and on lookers go 😆wtf? Never got into the whole pannier craze either. If I can't wear it or put in a pack on the rack it stays at home. Now have a bone stock 2009 with 11000km and mint. It will get a Cogent suspension in the future. But keep it relatively factory. That DR is noice though. I Keep telling my brother to get one. 👍

2008 klr650. Stage2 dynojet, opened the air box with a lexx exhaust also 16 tooth counter sprocket. Runs alot better than stock. Never left me ever anywhere! 30,000 miles. Just religiously maintained. As reliable as a hammer!!!

Thanks for your participation. MY 2008 also has a 16 tooth sprocket and that helped. How has the performance been improved with the dynojet? Noticeable difference in throttle response?

@@pegasusmotorcycletours oh you can definitely tell a difference but it I wouldn't say it's like putting a flat slide carb on there but it definitely increases the power after all it is a KLR, so your not gonna kust crack the throttle n ride a wheely!!! Lol. I cut 4, 1 inch holes on top of the air box n siliconed a piece of screen to help keep debris out.

I have a 2003 DR650 I bought it in 2005. with only 400 miles. The guy I bought it from also had a KLR650 and he had just bought a KTM 650. He had to sell the KLR or the DR. I bought the DR because it just looked more dirt worthy. He had jetted it for maximum power. It is a beast. I love it. Great on the road too. it hauls. I called the guy a few weeks after to see if he wanted to ride, he told me he had trashed the ktm bike the previous weekend in Big Bear on a light snow trail. I hugged my bike and I told him how sad I felt for him. am getting up there in years(66) and struggle picking it up sometimes, so my next bike will be a DR400 or that SWM 500R, supposedly about 300 lb and more dirt worthy. Maybe even the new CRF300L fuel injected bike. I like taking dirt traiIs and they can get difficult sometimes if they are not maintained. I still like the DR650 because it is better on the dirt. I enjoyed your review - good solid info.

I am glad you found the review accurate and valuable - My last review was of the DRZ400S so feel free to take a look - it has gotten nothing but positive feedback so far so that makes me happy. It definitely is a much lighter and dirt capable bike. Nice video! Truth is, if you're going for round-the-world trips, you might want to get the bike that's more suited to street riding in stock condition (KLR). But, if you're not sure what's more satisfying: tearing up pavement or ripping down trails, then the DR offers you a platform that can be built to either specification. You don't have the same flexibility with the KLR. The DR can be made into an ADV touring bike every bit as capable (and sometimes more so) as the KLR. But the DR will always be a better off-road bike than the KLR because of the geometry and weight. In my opinion, pavement is boring. Pavement isn't the ride, pavement is what stands between me and the ride. I want to see the dirt roads, two-tracks, and cow trails that 99% of people never get to see. I want a bike that can take on just about anything a mountain trail can throw at it and keep clawing for more. And I don't want to have to use a truck to trailer my bike until I can get to the trail (why I don't have a straight dirt bike.) So, for me, it was a no-brainer. The Suzuki DR650 was the winner, hands down. It's cheap, has an aftermarket community that rivals Jeeps, and it's simple enough that a knucklehead like me can still work on it. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes the thrill of the *_road less traveled!_*

Beautifully put - we seem to agree one hundred percent on this. The feeling and sound of the gravel crackling under the rubber is one of my favorite sensations, ever since I was a child. I have a 2013 KLR, and couldn't be happier, water cooling has it's value over oil cooling, as engines tend to last longer, the downside is crash & sump guards matter but add some weight, the doohickey balancer lever is Kawasaki's big mistake, replacement with the Eagle Mike kit & captive round torsion spring fixes it, soon both brands will need new bikes, Kawasaki should have had one in the market by now.

Traded my Versys 300 x in for a KTM390 Adventure and am very glad I did, great little bike. The only draw back is the 14.5 liter gas tank but can still get 400 Km per tank so not to bad. I put the Dunlop TrailMax Mission tires on it. They are a true 50/50 tire the best I have ever had by a long run, got almost 5,000 Km and they still look like new, Great on paved, gravel, and dirt roads, also good on wet grass, Even with my Trekker 33/46 liter hard bags on and full still average 3.3 liters per 100 km. Still looking at the KLR 2022 for a third bike, to have one with more weather protection, for the bad weather days and all so for longer trips, Love that 23 liter gas tank, and the great millage they get, per tank of gas.

I don't have experience with smaller KTMs but do own an SXC 625 and holy smokes what a bike it is. Packs a punch unlike others in the class. I don't know how they manage to do it honestly from a 300lb bike. But again small gas tank limits the range - 60 miles max which is ridiculous. Kawasaki saw my KLR650 only review and liked it enough to be sending me the new one for review so please consider subscribing and stay tuned for that. Have the Acerbis tank on my DR 650 and it has a locking gas cap, just have to order it for the tank. The DR chain is easy to adjust but it has to be almost to loos, to go up the next notch, so it is not to tight. Had the old stile KLR and loved the softer suspension on it. Thinking of trading my Versys 300 X in on a 2022 KLR Versys great bike but don't like the high rev engine. The DR for day rids and rough roads and the KLR for longer touring or 2 up. Bough great bikes. Don't like windshields on the DR, Love the feel of the wind on my chest. and a good rain suit works better than any windshield to keep you dry.

You should take the 300 X for a test great little bike. but I like 650 singles, sort of stuck on them.

Sorry to disagree Pegasus but I love the way the DR650 handles on the road too. And I think it looks pretty cool too. For me it hands down beats the KLR. I agree with you about the tank-bag problem with the plastic tank but I wear a Fjallraven messenger bag over my shoulder for carrying my phone n iPad and other stuff I don't want to lose, that solves that problem. And riding without a tank bag when you've got a lot of luggage up is a plus imho. Thanks for this video - awesome.

Great review, been going through KZbin and this has to be the most honest review I've seen. Could you advise on what to look out for when buying 2nd hand? Also what would be high mileage? How is this bike commuting in traffic and also highways speeds? I'm really leaning to this due to being affordable, and I plan on taking it off road on occasion. I was looking at a v strom 650, but obviously not much ground clearance. I would still consider that for the right price though. Cheers

There are so many things to watch out for when buying used and I've actually been working on the video that helps folks like you when evaluating a used motorcycle. There's too much to list here so please stay tuned for that very complete list. As for What mileage is high on a single-cylinder 650, for me I don't go over the high teens. These bikes should be able to go over sixty or seventy Thousand Miles without needing a major top-end overhaul. But meeting the owner will tell you a lot about how it was used and taken care of. For a second generation k l r in the San Diego Market one can be picked up for under four grand. Anything around four grand is a good deal.

The kalr is a bit more Road oriented due to the fairings. If you are looking for something manageable for mostly Road and sometimes dirt be sure to run through my playlist of 650 Adventure touring motorcycles. I also reviewed the V-Strom. But a bike that you might consider is one of the latest reviews of the Honda nc700x. These bikes all seem to fit your needs and can be had for a lower budget with plenty of Adventure left in them. More reviews are in the making so please stay tuned and feel free to shoot me questions in the meantime. Can't go wrong with a k l r if it fits you physically since it's a big and fairly heavy bike.

I got the impression you believe the DR650 is more reliable than the KLR650, plus better off-road, so all you need is to upgrade to a larger tank for the Suzuki? So if you had a DR in Europe you'd keep a DR in the USA instead of the KLR?

It's fair to say that if I started with the Suzuki first, it would be the bike that I would keep, after probably putting some money into luggage and air protection, a better seat and a bigger tank.

The DR needs more upgrades IMO, all the KLR really needs is pegs and guarding. Theres a video of me riding sand dunes pretty hard with a stock KLR on here, so it will deffinately go anywhere the DR will. A few years back I rode a Mountain Madness event in BC with a guy on a BMW 650 X Challenge, we really rode some crazy stuff on that trip and I didnt have trouble keeping up.

Yup. I had that bike. Wanted to review it but a friend borrowed it and crashed it into a guardrail on a mountain curve. Check out my playlist for that rescue video. Fantastic bike. The air suspension was interesting but lack of luggage and a soft subframe made me sell. I loved my sertao though.

Hi. I am not sure I understand your question - You plan to be doing 90% dirt roads and 10% highway? If that is the case, definitely the DR - it's more suitable for dirt.

Different bikes for a different purpose! Do you plan on doin longer runns on road and lighter trails? KLR. Shorter day trips and heavier off-road? DR. You cant really go wrong with either. Cars come in different colors for a reason. I went with the DR and love it! Would have loved to find a nice klx650!

before I bought a bike after a 38 year riding hiatus (dirt bikes) both the KLR 650 and the DR 650 were at the top of my list but I wanted to look at others.. went to look at a BMW G650 didn't realize it was a belt drive and he couldn't deal on it I was getting anxious he also had a CBR 600F2 for a price I couldn't pass up... Very steep "Re-learning" curve on riding a sport bike needless to say! it toured Ok but not what I was looking for Enter Suzuki Vstrom 650's... all it took was one quick ride down the street and I was hooked it eats highway miles comfortably but it's no dirt bike! graded/fire roads are just fine gets me to and from campsites but still not good on single track.. KLR and DR are still in the back of my mind for more difficult off-roading! Thanks for the great Video on the two bikes still can't make a decision

I appreciate the comment - actually, the BMW F650GS and the G650GS is chain drive - I own two myself and they are the topic of the next video I plan to release by July. So please stay tuned for that because one version of that bike is a direct competitor to the KLR, but a tad lighter, more powerful, and EFI! So I am actually leaning more in favor of it since it also sits about an inch higher and has more suspension travel. It also has ABS you can with off, and heated grips standard. So I suggest you take a look - I am referring to the Dakar version of the 650GS, or the Sertao which was it's name in later year models. I have the Sertao and so far like it a lot. But please surprise so that you will be notified when that comparative review is finally released. Cheers! Nik

I used to pack like that, not anymore. I reevaluated what I was carrying and only carry what I absolutely need. Went to ultra light gear and dropped 60 lbs.

Thank you for your message. I carry about 55lb worth of sleeping, clothing, kitchen, lighting, and other gear in the pack on top. The luggage hold tools and spare parts and video equipment. As the new gear get lighter I will certainly be loosing some weight, but I found this set up to work bst for me. There will always be a tricky balance game between comfort and weight but 60 pounds of shedding is impressive on your part. I never really thought about the theft aspect of it, that makes a lot of sense and that makes it a much better option than something like a KTM or a BMW or even maybe in Africa twin. It’s a lot easier to lose $5000 bike that a $15,000 or $20,000 bike Aunt on the fact that it’s older and simpler looking is going to be less enticing to a thief probably are, great point

Exactly. I remember walking into a Kawasaki dealership in Rio de Janeiro and seeing the sticker on one of their sport bikes - it was literally three times the price one would pay in the US. I though, no wonder you never see these on the road there...whose crazy to be sitting at a red light after dark in something so easily taken. Tha ks for watching.

Have ridden a DR London to Vladivostok in 2014 and ridden a KLR Montreal to Santiago Chile in 2017. Both perfect tools for the job. The DR needs more spent on it to get to adventure spec but is much easier to service and work on and repair after crashing (and you will crash!). The Kawasaki loves the open road and is a pile of cheap plastic and nuts and bolts that defy mechanical logic and hang together through thick and thin.The DR primary gear came loose in Uzbekistan and the KLR lost its electrics in pouring rain before the southern border in Mexico - other than that zero problems. Still have the DR....didn't bond with the KLR quite the same...just remember, at the end of the day it matters way more you're out there riding the world than what bike is under you - stop thinking too much and just grab one and go. Sounds like a heck of an adventure. Good on you! and I agree 100% - in the end of the day, any bike can be an adventure bike - people have gone around the world on Vespa scooters, R1s, and Electra Glides... My 2008 also had an electric issue - the neutral wire was rubbing agains the subframe holding the headlight unit and it shorted - took a second to diagnose. Other than that, no issues. Yep 650s are sweet for fitting through hotel front doors, onto the deck of ships and picking up after a whoopsy on the side of some mountain ...although the KLR was a pig to pick up it was a great way to meet people while you wait in the rain on some muddy road waiting for help! Never felt the need for a bigger bike anywhere around the world. Now have a '16 AT as well as the DR but meh...seriously, all this wasted horsepower and weight! Even here in Oz all you need is something you can just ease into top, crack 110, sit back, and watch the world slide by - aaaah yes lets go somewhere - Cheers Dean

@@deanmaynard8060 Thanks for the message - yes, both excellent point regarding getting it through doors and onto boats etc - I forgot to mention that and it made me reminisce on all those times I had to find a curious solution and get out of the elements. I will do a video specific to sleeping while ADV touring, and it will include a prize (hammock) given to a winner who share the most interesting sheltering story of his or her ADV tour so please stay tuned for that. I reviewed the vatrom - was actually my first video. Great bike but very different. I had two 1000s. A much more powerful and satisfying bike. It all depends on intended uses.

So for a start off the DR650 doesn't come like that. You've added a bash plate, larger tank (Acerbis?) , screen, pannier frames are also added and the seat doesn't look original. If so start adding up the cost of all that and your instrumentation consists of a speedo, odometer & trip. Pretty basic and it's a trail bike not adventure or dual purpose. However you need to spend quite a lot of money to bring it up to spec. The Royal Enfield has all that and more as standard, apart from the pannier frames, however pannier mounts are already there. Himalayan also has far superior instrument panel including a fuel gauge (analogue), 2 X trips, clock, ambient temperature, gear indicator and a compass as well as a analogue rev counter. The DR650 is looking pretty dated in comparison. Oh & I forgot the Himalayan has a main stand (standard), as well as a carrier. Don't think the DR or KLR has any of that. Oh and I nearly forgot the Himalayan comes with a screen as standard too. Gosh that's an adventure bike set up right out the box. The DR is lighter & has pretty good power and plush suspension however here the Himalayan is $7,500 on the road where the DR650 is just shy of $10,000 with none of the bits the Himalayan comes with as standard. The gap is getting bigger I think. Not sure how much longer the DR will meet emissions for. Otherwise it is a basic good all round bike but looking a bit dated now with what's on offer.

Hi Frank - thanks for that detailed comment - do you own the Himalayan? It is most definitely a bike in my sight for the near future, and the price can most certainly not be beat. A bike that comes ready for adventure like that, with a proven name, is worth considering. My main issue with it is the small engine size. I have also been hearing one to many stories fo the front end simply snapping off - have you seen/heard anything of this sort? I am genuinely interested in seeing what that bike is about, so any guidance is always appreciated. Also I heard the brakes are a bit weak but this is the case throughout the class. What do you think about spare part availability for that bike - would it be a bike you would trust taking o na prolonged trip down south through Latin America, for example? @@pegasusmotorcycletours Yes I had one and loved it. I am looking at buying another one in Australia to do some touring there and will leave my other bike here in NZ. Issues with Himalayan. The carb model run very lean to meet emissions. Answer take it to a bike shop with a Dyno and get the jet's tuned to the bike. My compass was not accurate. I was told do figure 8's. This didn't work for me although I tryed many times. First European had to take the instrument cluster off to calibrate. Presumably doing a similar antic with the instruments. After this was done never had any more issues with it-handy tool to have. They all seemed to suffer with poor quality rim tape. My tube literally exploded on the highway. I put insulation tape over the spoke heads then put new rim tape on and fitted new Michelin Sirac Tyre.No problem after that. The other option with the rim tape issue is to replace with TUbliss system (no tube). Removes the weak link altogether. The ambient temperature gauge is totally inaccurate. I suspect the sender is under the tank as the false reading comes once engine has heated up. Probably move it behind instrument cluster. These are relatively minor niggles, otherwise very comfortable on long trips-handles amazing on/off road & love the fuel gauge for off road. Range is very good at just over 400 ks. You can get over 500ks by adding a couple of 3 ltr fuel cans-1 each side of the pannier frames beside tank. The other option for these frames which I used them for were Via Trail waterproof bags for your day to day tools-hats-chain lube etc. Easy to work on and everything is accessible and the parts are very reasonable. It's not fast but it's fast enough to cover the miles reliably. It's also a descent weight for a 411cc single. These last 2 reason's were why I bought my Ducati Scrambler Classic. However the Himalayan just get's the job done wherever you go in a relatively un-fussed manor. I hear you say do you miss it-yes certainly which is why I wouldn't hesitate buying another one. Loved it and I went to some extraordinary places that I otherwise would never have seen, and to be fair I'm really not the great off road, however it does inspire confidence with it's easy manor. Depends on how much you'd like to spend, and how aggressive you need the tires to be for both dirt and aspahalt, dry and wet. The higher end is led by Heidenaus 60s and Metzler's toursnce, the middle end by continental tkc, the lower end of the spectrum by Shinko 704/705. More dirt aggressive would be the MotoZ tractionator. All really depends on the first two factors mentioned above.

Hi Nick! Just found last night your channel and found it super valuable. Also share ride priorities, adventure tastes and the red 2009 KLR. Planning a long roundtrip Mexico Patagonia next year, and have been considering, fantasizing with the yamaha T7 and use in 50/50 rides. (Also mecanily simpleand light, but more capable bike) What's your opinion on the T7 for that kind of trips? Nice to have you. Whatever bike you decide on be sure you are able to complete basic maintenance on it. The lighter the better of course, but make sure it suits your style of riding. I didn't mind the modest performance of the KLR then cause I was new to the adv world. I had nothing to compare it to. But I'd definitely do it on a different, more capable bike now simple because I'm a better rider and can handle more machine. But in all honesty, if you look at my last video about my current garage, 5 bikes out of 10 are adv touring bikes, all of them 650 thumpers, but 4 of them prioritizing weight over everything else. 650ccs is a monster when paired with 350 pounds. Take a look for other ideas worth considering. Thanks for your question.

Very professional and enjoyable video. I like the Suzuki's weight and less expensive look but one thing that really upsets me is why they put a city sized like gas tank on it? The DR650 is mainly a off road bike, they just added this and that to make it "look like" an adventure touring motorcycle, really that tank is a stupid marketing choice. The KLR650 seems attractive but not servicing friendly and that is important when you decide to travel long distances, just think checking the spark plugs!

That is very true and thank you for bringing that up - the valve clearance job is so much more involved on the KLR, and working with removing and replacing the plastics gets old quick. I still think the DR is a better bike for ADV touring, and will some day soon own one again for myself. But now I am working on getting to know the newest additions - the DRZ400s, and the BMW GS650. @@pegasusmotorcycletours I just learned that they stopped the production of the KLR650 and that is sad because there's nothing left like it. The DR650 is a beautiful bike but it's most suited for off-road, yes you can install a bigger gas tank (in plastic) but you have to worry when you park your bike because the gas tank doesn't have a lockable cap! The best bike I can see at the moment which is affordable and suitable for long trips is the Himalayan but its 400cc engine is under powered for long road riding.

@@billadmond9450 I have a locking cap on my IMS and Safari tanks. I buy a lot of affordable parts used, like those tanks. Check out Procycle.us for new DR accessories though. The owner shaved a bored/stroked DR down to 320lb curb weight.

@@pegasusmotorcycletours The KLR650 is back with a new model while I was checking other manufacturers and found the Triumph adventure series which are in direct competition with BMW due to their big size engines and the prices. In my opinion the Himalayan is the best all around reliable and no useless frills and electronic, just it needs a 650cc engine.

The Ortega Highway! I know it well, because we used to patrol the South Main Divide Truck Trail and it crosses the Ortega highway near its top. We had many adventures chasing illegal alien smugglers up there. (US Border Patrol)

The KLR needs next to nothing to make it ready for a round the world trip, but it will always be less dirt worth due to suspension and weight. I am releasing a review of the new KLR this Saturday which is much improved so please tune in. Another great competitor is the Honda XR650L - another review in the making.

For shade, buy one of the small umbrellas; about $5. Collapses to a foot long and opens to about 4-foot shade.

If both were modded, the klr will come out in the long run due to higher ground clearance. I believe the dr650 only advantage is weight. Which could be competed with in KLR mods such as plastic gas tank ect.

Thanks for the input - I respectfully have to disagree - the DR has a higher clearance by about an inch at 11.4, and more suspension travel. It would also be very difficult for the KLR to shed nearly 60 pounds. My vote still goes to the DR - the wight is a huge advantage and this is why I am now the owner of the DRZ - another 40lb lighter than the DR. Love my KLR and all the mods I have done & made myself- no self respecting BMW rider would dare fit anything thats not factory approved ! But the KLR and the people that ride them generally don't care and put function above form .

100% agree - in fact I recently picked up a GS650 just to see whats about. I have been both satisfied and disappointed with that bike - I also picked up a DRZ400S so please stay tuned for those reviews. However, all roads ultimately lead back to the trusty KLR. Thanks for the message - Nik

@@pegasusmotorcycletours I asked because south America is very dangerous and I'd avoid putting my life at risk there. It's almost like throwing a coin every day you go out. But happy he's ok. Now I'm living and canada and maybe one day I could do the amazing sierra Nevada with your tour. Currently I own a bonneville not to off road capable but I'm following the channel and loving it

DR PROS: 2022 DR650 is $800US cheaper than the 2022 KLR650. The DR undercarriage provides 2" more clearance for off road riding and 3" more suspension travel, front and rear, than the KLR. The DR is air/oil cooled utilizing a no maintenance oil cooling system vs the KLR radiator/water cooled system which requires antifreeze testing, updating and flushing. The biggest pro is the DR650 weighing 366lbs compared to the KLR's 488lbs. For perspective, the KLR weight is equal to a DR carrying the operator and additional 122lb passenger which seriously broadens the difference in performance between the two mid 40hp models. DR650 CONS: The DR has a 1/2" higher seat height. The DR fuel tank is smaller with a 3.4 gallon tank vs. the KLR 6.1 gallon. DISPELLED MYTH: The DR does not lack sealed road capabilities, it can cruise all day at 70MPH and are known, all things being equal, have greater engine longevity. The specs here are factory reported and are what set apart these two long produced models of 650's. Anyone who disputes these facts are doing so solely to justify their purchase, to promote unsupported bias's and like politics and religion shut themselves out to any other narratives.

I don’t see Gene wearing proper boots for off-road riding. I wear Thor motocross boots while riding dirt on my DRZ400S and they have saved me many leg injuries over the years, including last weekend when my foot peg tried to take out my Achilles Tendon.

Yeah he was just getting into the game and didn't have the proper gear then. He learned it right away that day even when his bike pinned his knee against dirt wall. He is well geared now and is currently in El Salvador heading south. Thanks for participating in the conversation. There are studies that show that boots are the most important piece of protection after the helmet cause typically the for hits first and it's such a complex body part with the little metatarsals.

Same here - a 23 years old vagabond with 4 grand to my name - just enough to buy a KLR and pay for gas for a few months of roaming around north America getting to know much of our great land, meeting great people, having some time to myself. Then shipping that loyal machine to Europe and doing the same. Thats' what I mean by having brand loyalty influencing my decision to keep the KLR. It's a damn shame Kawasaki decided to call it quits.
