I test my Suzuki DRZ400E and its newly installed Big Bore kit in the tight terrain, to compare the difference to when it was stock standard. I am running a 15-44 gearing compared to my normal 15-47 gearing that I use to run in such conditions.
In my opinion it has changed this dual sports motorcycle from sleepy to wide awake. Definitely a worth while upgrade.

Thumb's up to the bloke with the soft roader tyres. Looked pretty tricky going for an ordinary punter,such as myself.

if it's working great, it's a good upgrade...if over heats, there is always a way to fix that...different rad or like the DR650, add a fan to the rad on a switch for the tight stuff...best video I seen for the big bore kit....tested in real conditions from someone who has been using the bike both before and after...next the long camping test...keep the content coming.

Great video Lance and well done. Making more power doesn’t mean more heat it means more efficiency. I upgraded my Sportster from 883 (50hp) to 1250 (106hp) and it made same oil temps and Cylinder head temps. All the parts were top shelf and carefully chosen resulting in over 45000 trouble free ks of hard riding. It was located in the Pilbara and you don’t get hotter than that. Realistically this isn’t a radical increase in displacement and providing everything is in spec you shouldn’t have any dramas. The biggest concern would be vibration. The 1250 pistons on my Sportster were actually lighter than the standard HD ones and the bike ran smoother.

Mate I totally agree with everything you just said. The bike works much easier for the riding I do anyway. But I’ll know more as a clock the kilometres up and get a good understanding of the pros or cons if any.

Lol. I know exactly where your dead end is! Great work getting the DRZs around those tracks. Much easier on a lighter bike, but good on you.

Hey lance great clip love your videos mate. Just wondering if you have a fan on your bike and if so a temp guage of any sort?
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer 9 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. No I only have the standard setup for cooling. My bike has only ever overheated a hand full of times and that was in terrible conditions. So I feel I don’t need a fan.

Hi Lance love the video, definitely inspiring, that big bore kit seems definitely worth it. Also my DRZ400 is starting to blow blue smoke here and there, thinking of getting the big bore kit down the track, how much did the big bore kit cost all said and done?
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer 9 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. The big bore is 11000 and bolts straight on. I would probably also fit a new cam chain whilst in there and hopefully your valves are within spec so you’ll only be out of pocket the big bore and cam chain.

Older DRZ with an after market fuel tank, that's not stock. Mine gets 120km to the stock tank in heavy going, creeks and sand. Might get 170 km on compacted dirt road, depends if you like to ease up to, or hammer up to cruising speed.

I've dabbled in Mountain bicycles which use a sealer like "Slime" in their tires for those small punctures even when running tubes. Do you know if this is a popular or tried and true thing people do for their dual-sport bikes?

Lance, DR 600 would it be better for you, considering your weight offroad / onroad riding / adventure you do?
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer 2 ай бұрын
Nah too big for me. I like to tackle the harder stuff and that bike is another 30 kilos again. The 400 does the job. But if travelling around Australia perhaps the 600 would be the way to go as it can carry more weight.

Not saying your bike will overheat but if the motor is producing more power then it has to produce more heat . Maybe there is a radiator and/or water pump mod to go with the BB kit ?
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer 9 ай бұрын
Mate it definitely produces more heat but from my understanding it also has more surface area for cooling. However I’d be the first to say I’ll see how she goes. So far though super happy with it considering the temps we had that day.
@6226superhurricane
@6226superhurricane 9 ай бұрын
it's only a 4mm bigger bore so 2mm each side it doesn't make any significant difference. drz has huge radiators if you're moving it won't overheat. if you doing hard single pushing the bike, leaving it running or using it for mustering you fit a thermo fan and it'll never oveheat
@jarrod1687
@jarrod1687 9 ай бұрын
You're not at Max power very long, part throttle there would be negligible difference in heat produced from the bbk
@marshalgouldson2416
@marshalgouldson2416 9 ай бұрын
How do you know that it is not overheating? With no fan or overheating light like the sm/s. Do you have one of those radiator caps with the gauge inside. It may be overheating but not boiling over.
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer
@The_Apprentice_Adventurer 9 ай бұрын
I’ve had my bike spitting out coolant from the overflow tank a few times in the past. That’s when I know she is well and truly overheating, that’s my comparison anyway.

Yeh i watched, i guess maybe I'm just paranoid. I bought a new drz cpl months ago. I might get a radiator cap gauge. I probably weigh more than you and all your gear, we will see 😂
@6226superhurricane
@6226superhurricane 9 ай бұрын
if it isn't boiling it's not overheating. the hotter it runs without boiling the less engine wear you have.
@marshalgouldson2416
@marshalgouldson2416 9 ай бұрын
@@6226superhurricane thats not true. It is overheating as soon as it goes above whatever the engineers designed. More heat equals greater expansion of the parts, the bore gets smaller and the piston gets larger and the lubricant does not work as well. The point at which it boils over is just what pressure the radiator cap is designed for, u can buy different ones.

Click N Rides suck. The slightest nudge and the housing cracks and you lose your indicator. 70 bucks gone each time. After the 3rd housing cracked I've changed to barkbuster indicators in the front and cheap wrap around fork signals as a backup, and stedi indicators (polycarbonate) on the rear as well as cheap license plate button indicators as back up in case I break them off road. Get rid of those things they seem cool but cause so much grief. I only ever broke one off road the rest where just putting a leg up or smacking it with my helmet letting the tyres down
