What an awesome and truly educational build! I started following this build about a month ago only watching the GS videos from part1 to the time lapse and it really had it all - from the aesthetics to really technical mechanics such as replacing valve shims, colour tuning and don't forget the carbs! You're really building my confidence to start my own build in that no matter what crazy stuff happens... there will be a way to figure it out... From South Africa: "Moerse dankie" (a massive thank you)

GS550L Was my first real bike. Awesome bike... had a 4 into 1 header. It had a 6 speed and it was like having a passing gear on the freeway. It would peg the 85 mph speedometer.... no idea how fast... but less than a half hour from Portland Oregon to Salem, Oregon. I was young. One of the most balanced bikes ever (82) far more comfortable than the GS650E with its 5 speed.

Back in the 80s I put a GS750 engine with GS850 barrels and pistons in a GS550 frame. It was a bit of a squeeze but the result was well worth the effort. It would be an interesting project with modern suspension and brakes.

When I was a kid (18yrs old) I crashed a 1983 Suzuki GS750E, for the time what a bike. I had a rear tire blow out at about 95MPH+ (yes, lucky to be alive). That bike to get running again was $150.00 bucks, new points cover/case cover and the handlebars and cluck lever, The fairings/cosmetics was about $1000.00..............OMG what a stupid kid I was , but what a great time that was. Great video love the look of your bike in my opinion. All the best.

Brother from across the big blue. Awesome job man, i seriously appreciate the time you took to educate. I watched from start to finish on this bike in a setting. I now much more knowledgeable thanks to you. As I started from only knowing how to change the clutch cable, I’m not sure how complimentary that is. However! I don’t think I could have learned what I have and will from you. Either way, I picked myself up an 1982 GS850 which prompted me to do my research and now after watching, I realize I’m not quite sure how to get the correct tools for cleaning the carb. Any hints on what you put together or use for yours? Cheers
@forthebold
@forthebold 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks, - Carbs = ultrasonic cleaning for the inside is the very proper way to do, but depends on the state of the bike. If it's running with no issues you might be ok with just carb cleaning spray, but if they're clogged up they'll need tearing down.

i like the bike, a heads up from a pro use mortar DIY from a builder's merchants for a guide coat on you're primer apply with a sprung 2 soak the exhaust raps before fitting 3 go on eBay and get a nordic powder coating gun £99.00 and never ever use a rattle can, that is not not paint. the powder coating will not harm your domestic kitchen oven in the slightest, neither will it level any trace of smell. hope that helps for future projects, all the best willy

I have just began to binge all of your videos and they are amazing! I am rebuilding an '82 550LZ and was wondering what exhausts and air filters you used on this build? Did you have to change the jets as well or are they stock? Also, do you prefer kickstart, and where would you put a battery if you had one? Sorry for all the questions but I haven't found a holy guide to bike mods quite yet.
@forthebold
@forthebold 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, glad you like them. So: Air filters = I always go for K&N pods Jets = Yeah you have to go bigger with pods Kick start = prefer electric start, and yes this GS550 has a battery too, it's in the cowl.

Hi, great build. I didn’t see any welding. Did you rivet everything? My biggest worry in starting a build is the fact I’ve never welded

Only riveted the pan. The hoop was welded. For anything like that where you’re not confident I’d get a professional to do it. Anything non structural then it’s a good time to play around and see how you do
