Back in 1987 as a young poor guy, having never seen one, I thought I invented the two cables on a double banjo bolt out of the master cylinder idea, lol. I went to a Helicopter repair company and bought a length of braided ss hose, the appropriate A/N fittings, and with a hacksaw and crescent wrenches, cobbled together my own twin front brake line set up, to allow me to complete the swap of a wrecked 350LC front end, onto my CB400T to go racing at the local track. Happy days, sigh. 🙂

I did the same back in the day on an old Goldwing K1 (the unfaired one), and linked the rear pedal to the front left caliper and the rear, and then the front lever just did the right disc... it worked far better in traffic, stacked them on a double bolt, just like you, and later on Honda adopted as standard on the 1500!

Great video. I recently refurbished the front calipers on my Bandit, and replaced the original hoses for the race setup as well. The only hiccup was a caliper bolt stuck, I had to take it to a garage where they used a press to remove it! Your older videos have given me the confidence to this and other jobs on my own, so thank you!

The vacuum bleeder is getting some serious use lately buddy. Great kit. Im all for mechanical aids . The oldet i get the more i get! I was horrified at work when i had to use an open ended 13mm spanner to fit some ( 60) casters to 15 stillages. There was just no room for an impact wrench or even a ratchet spanner . So i had to go old school. Luckily I'm paid by the hour . I considered drilling 60 new holes just so i could use my power tools to put the fasteners on! Im not sure that works in terms of time management though... 😅 Happy days buddy. Peace and love to you and Penny. ✌️❤️

I did same thing on my trike.. on rear… converted rear into duel brakes and combined them. Front be independent. Seeing your video.. I knew exactly what you’re doing. Very Kwel video. Nice closeups. Hi Both. Love the content as usual. I'd really love it if you did a beginner bike series. Would you consider it? Take something like a 2nd gen Sv650 (or any popular first "big bike") and show how to properly maintain, service, winterproof, and tastefully upgrade (e.g. braded hoses) it. Your content is top knotch and youre a great teacher, so I'd love to see your take on this. Many people (myself included) lack even the basic knowledge of how to get started, let alone understand the intricacies of how to take something like a brake caliper apart. I'm looking to do this to my 650 bandit in time... definately need to learn more though. Regardless, I loved the video - I hope youre both well too!

Thank you for your kind words mate, it's always a dilemma with small bikes. You may notice that actually nobody really makes videos building, customise and maintaining small learner style bikes, it's just not a popular format and I guess for many reasons... possibly because young riders starting out, don't have spare money for customising, let alone to invest in a decent toolkit and the equipment to do jobs and even, for some riders, just somewhere safe and dry to work on a bike... and those videos I have found, which are very rare, have absymally poor support and don't get many hits... am sure they are many other reasons it's not popular, perhaps the disinterest of the younger generation in mechanical things... But most maintence work is generic so what we do on larger bikes will usually translate to smaller bikes, and we've covered most things by now!

The feedback online for the tokico 6 pots seems mixed from my experience. I had them as factory equipment on my ZX9 and did street riding with 2 or 3 track days and hated the feeling. I found a pair of 90mm spaced Nissin 4 pots from and older GSXR, rebuilt them completely with the exception of the pistons and in my opinion they offer feeling 500 times better after more street riding and another 6 or 7 track days. Outright braking power and distance isn’t really any different but it’s everything in between that seems far superior. I’m not an advanced / expert group rider but I would say I’m in the top third of my intermediate group quite comfortably. I’ll send you my tokicos gratis if you want them. 😅 Both setups were run with the HEL race setup for hoses and rebuilt brake master.

Great review buddy, thank you for sharing that, I think the biggest criticism of Toki'6's is that they jam up with brake dust all too quickly and the Nissin 4's just don't... and domestic riding day to day, that is a thing. As for race application, I think the world's moved on now, I have Bembo Monoblock Radial calipers on my Scrambler 12, and they're just insane... one finger on the lever, lean on the bars and the back wheel's hovering, good job it has ABS as you would definitely lock it!

I use a metal ruler or small straight edge to safely compress the pad and piston when reinstalling a wheel.

Hello from other side of the Pond. WNY here, have you ever tried quick bleeders? It's a longer bleed screw with a check ball in them, back them out 1/2 a turn, then pump away. I'm on second bike using them, for me works great.

Does running the brake lines like make a difference? I do find the brakes on mine pretty weak and callipers have been refurbed but they just seem to lack bite and lever feels a bit spongy. Is this normal? Doesnt help my other bike has brembo m50 callipers lol

Good work done Del ;) But upgrade? Even owners manual says that you shoud replace brake hoses every 4 years - who did this :P? Next question is - do anybody make a tests with new OEM brakes and HEL? Probably there is a little diference but in my opinion not huge. Third most important (as owner of this motorcycle) - the brakes are poor. In first place I recomended change master cylinder to 19 mm piston - radial or normal it depends what feeling of brakes you like. In secont place change the calipers for minimum 4 pot 34/32 ones. Nice video, as always. I have never upgraded to stainless lines before, and I get that it is the best route to take, so when the tie comes to service the "slows" on my single disc, two pot caliper on my Sportster, I intend to go with a stainless line and good HH pads. My question for you is, how much of an actual improvement should I expect? Not expecting some " X % increase" answer, but is it really noticeable in ordinary use? With the brakes that came on my bike, any improvement will be appreciated, but I am just curious what you have to say. Some sources act as if the improvement is like you are going to a larger rotor. Do stainless lines live up to the performance increase hype, or is it really just a safer option at non-track speeds? Thanks in advance for your answer. I hope you two have a nice weekend :)

Hi Tommy, it's a simple answer, Harley brakes are so poor they can do with all the help they can get... so braided hoses, along with copper sintered HH pads will make a healthy difference and coupled with a solid bleed and no air bubbles, they'll be as good as they can be! Brake cleaner is pretty toxic stuff, it can take paint off many things, including white wall tyres !! not sure what it was, but it didn't look nice once they were all clean.. ok for now, but a full resto at the end of the year i think..!

@Delboy - I purchased a gsx14 the other week - and I’m only taking delivery mid Jan - I see the today the bike failed it’s MOT from the dealership! This is the MOT fail note “Front Brake indicates excessive fluctuation of brake effort (1.2.1 (e)))” (major defect repair immediately) Now my question is this - what does that mean and what will they as a dealer have to do to fix the issue correctly? Could this be an issue with the 6 pot piston breaks or the disc floater things need a clean out which is then a super easy job . Or is it the discs are scrap ? Your opinion please

Hi mate, firstly sounds like it's not a worry if it's their problem, if they're selling you the bike, they have an obligation to rectify it first... However, just to explain, fluctuation of effort is best explained as imagine you have greasy spot on the disc, so it's gripping on 3/4 of it as it rotates but then slipping on the next little bit... it would be attributed to something no more complicated than contaminated disc or pads... So I would start by giving them a good clean with brake cleaner, disc and calipers, perhaps pop some new pads in it (specially if they're contaminated), and see if that improves it. Cleaining out the bobbins wouldn't hurt either and that's usually all it would take, it's no drama, just maintenance mate!

Does the sealey bleeder come with the hose to attach the two bleeder caliper at the same time?

Yes as you can see, there are two hoses to bleed either two single valve calipers at once, or a rear double valve caliper!

You can make a split bleeder with yours, you just need a small plastic t-piece and an extra length of hose, that's all the Sealey bleeder has, it's nothing fancy... I believe such fittings are available from automotive suppliers for things like carbs and breathers, even a brass one maybe, a small pipe fitting, just any t-piece then you can split two hoses in to one single hose in to your vac canister... should be an easy upgrade!

Nice demo Del, is there any noticeable difference between factory and race set up for road use? I'm guessing that brake response from the leaver would be marginally quicker in race set up but you would struggle to tell the difference for road use?

Exactly that mate, it makes little difference on the road, except for the two reasons I said, that it looks tidier and costs a little less!

Crikey those old pads were butchered! I tend to use a c clamp to push pistons back in with a lump of wood so as not to damage anything. Meticulous attention to detail as always mate!

Yes mate, very much so, I use a caliper piston spreader, the exact tool for the job, it's a cheap Chinese one, cost peanuts and works just fine, a fraction of the cost of replacing these ruined pads! Enjoy your weekend, ride safe!

Those poor calipers; sons of a well known troublesome family, daubed with facepaint to hide their shame. A kinder person might have spent a couple of hours with a sharp hobby knife, carefully cutting a 12mm high stencil of the word 'BLINGBO' along a few inches of masking tape, BEFORE spraying - y'know, a merest touch of cred, just to see them through the summer - with a smile on their pads . . . Mechanical sympathy - pays dividends : )xx
