Heres a tip for helping you keep the motor at top dead centre cylinder 1 & 4. Use a long threaded rod the same thread as the spark plug but thread it down the plug thread of cylinder number 2 or three. Its very easy to get the crank held at Bottom Dead Centre on cylinder 2 or 3 this way by gently rocking the crank back and forward till it rocks no more. In this configuration of motor Bottom Dead Centre on cylinder 2 and 3 is automatically top dead centre on numbers 1 and 4. Most cam timings are done referenced to cylinder number one Top Dead Centre. Obviously you have to be gentle and dont screw the threaded rod down so tightly that you damage the relevant piston crown. Obviously this system wont work on motors that dont have a 180 degree spacing on the two crankpin sets ( cross plane R1 Yamaha for example). It is so great not having the crank able to move while you are installing the cam shafts. Of course dont forget to remove the threaded rob before you rrotate the motor a few times with the cam chain tensioner installed to check your timing marks.

I’m really loving this series, nicely done. I just bought a GSX R600 Y, and in time will do a full strip down and rebuild so I’m assuming it’s the same engine with a smaller bore and some subtle year differences and little else. Good explanation on the cam timing marks, every engine is so different. But well done on getting such a superb series out while you are busy working. Brilliant. Thank you 👍

Hey Kev great job mate I’ve been radiusing oil gallerie corners etc and am crapping my boxers that I may not get all the swarf out Altho I’ve used vac cleaners and stuffed clean rag up said galleries etc ( I’ve found some galleries with flaming burrs in em from factory!) what is the best method of getting all this swarf out would a big ultrasonic do it or power washing of some sort ( FZR1000 yam) thanx
