This vid gives me flash backs ... the day i was 17 and 9 months old (the earliest u could get a licence here in Victoria Aus) i got myself a 93 black with purple and charcoal graphics RGV 250 i remember starting it with a kick (no electric start) the rattle and vibration of the motor and clutch the smell of 2 stroke gave me a chub every time .As a daily u could putt around all day the light weight little thing 130kg if i remember correctly and was an easy docile thing to ride u would never think it had any go in it till u hit around 9500rpm with a little puff of white smoke it woke up and u know u were riding a GP bike for the road .....Good times.

+let “Quily” be The early 500 was pretty quick as well. Took one for a test ride and redlined in the first 3 gears the looked down as I changed into 4 and had already hit 180 kms/ph then had to stop for traffic lights. Just as well those brakes were just as good.

I bought a new RGV 250P back in 1993. It was black with purple stickers. Your ride brought the memories flooding back. I also owned previous to the RGV a Kawasaki KR-1, this felt more harsh, less... smooth, but the KR was quicker, I saw 136mph on the clock, flat stick! Just love 250 stinkwheels! ;)

Was it the KR1S or the original KR1. I’ve always wondered how they fared against the Suzuki? Were they noticeably faster ?

Still miss my old RGV because it's one of those bikes you can use all the power all the time and bury it into the corners like nothing else. But after getting married and having kids my wife banned me from using it after seeing how I rode it.

+Michael Parker My first bike was the RG250WE1 HB (yellow and white with gold pin striping ) and it was faster than a few other bikes a little larger. Even out ran those vehicles with blue light once in the 80`s then ended up killing the engine on an 800 km journey - they aren't designed for cruising. Ended up selling that one for 1400AU then bought the full fairing RG260FG which had another 20 kms on the speedo. Seems there are still the odd 1 or 3 around. Saw an HB WE1 recently that looked like it just rolled off the show room floor. Couldn't believe my eyes.

@samartz The RGV is one of the more reliable of the 250cc two-strokes. Not much goes wrong with them, but that doesn't mean you can neglect. Use good oil and let it warm up before you work it hard and keep the oil and water topped up and you won't go wrong.

I had a 2003 aprillia rs125 extrema full power model 2stroke with 34hp, it went off the clock at 120-125mph, loved it, it out ran a cop car as well lol that was a laugh on the country roads of the Scottish countryside, I knew the roads better than them😂, flat out constantly that thing was, front wheel would lift on them back roads and if you were really trying u could even get air.

Not bad. A 180 km/h corrected top speed on par with the first GSX 400 R model. Everything was about power-to-weight ratio. You can't contradict physics.

my cbr2500rr did the same as this thing but rev through redline and keep pulling, it was pretty dead even with the rgv 200ks only thing better was i got 40000ks before it drop a valve not bad with out a service for well over 18months didnt even drop the oil on it in the time i owned it i have learnt to look after my bikes now that when i was a young lad lol love to see the rgv hold up that many ks with out failing not going to happen

+nev nig The RGV is about 30kg lighter and makes an extra 10-15 horsepower. so either the one you were racing was flogged or the guy couldn't ride it.

+Jethro Rose what are you talking about mate, my cbr250rr was as quick as the RGV if not quicker, and i never serviced it once's, i tested a RGV250 and was mad jumping back on a 2 stroke witch i did ride all my life as a kid yz80 kx125 rm250 and much more, but reliability was more of a factor for me plus it was my first road bike, like i said 40000ks befor it went bang with out any maintenance didnt even drop the oil on it for the 2 years i had it was a good bike to learn on 10 years ago, i now have a gsxr750 07 witch i dont ride much now days,

like i said the one you rode against or rode must have been flogged or you didn't ride it properly. they're a lot quicker than a CBR250RR. they used to race them against 400cc 4 cylinder 4 strokes. I like the CBRs, don't get me wrong, i have a CBR600RR and CBR1000RR in the garage next to my RGV.

+Jethro Rose Agree. My first RG250WE1 HB was faster than many others a little larger. Even took it off the speedo at one point. Don't know if mine was just a freak but even had a few mates that rode larger bikes that couldn't believe the power and speed for just 250cc. AND mine wasn't even in the same class as the RGV`s

Noevilea yup, the big thing with the RGV and smaller bikes that can shock people on bigger bikes is that their gearing is so much more appropriate for twisty stuff, and due to the weight can be tipped into corners so much later and carry more corner speed. others think "how the hell is it pulling away n me" but its because whilst you've only got 50hp or whatever, you're actually able to use it because of the gearing being appropriate for the speed you're doing and that you carried to much more speed into and through the corner...

this thing is slow for an RGV, i dont know whats wrong but in 6th gear ive had mine upto 241kph (with a gps to verify speedo) and mine gets there a hell of alot faster than this 1 did, as far as i know mine is completely stock standard. is the tacho and speedo out? has the gear ratio been changed? is it in need of a rebuild? just shocked that mine is so much quicker. mine is vj22 1992 if that makes a difference?

Yes,RGV and The aprilia RS 250 came with verry different hp depend on what production year. many things 5-6hp is not much but that is much on a light 250 2stroke. Rgv and Rs have same engien because aprilia both engiens from yamaha V2. The difference was that aprilia used a bit difference exhaust system to produce more powersomething that did reflect in motogp and on the road. best Rs did produce 72hp from from a 68hp Rgv engien. Lowest hp was 56hp. Take care your bike and it will raise value!

the rgv also produced 72hp in the form of the vj23 and trhe lowest hp is 45 and yamaha did not develop the vtwin suzuki developed it

I had a 1989 version (the older model) but modified.I could see 214 Kmh, the rpm could almost reach the 12500.

hahahah. You have a lot to learn my friend. RGV= 60bhp approx, CBR250R=26bhp, Ninja 250r=33bhp. The RGV is a two-stroke and the others are four strokes and generally speaking, two-strokes will produce more power for the same cc.

There is also some 250 4sytroke who are faster than the new 4strokes. Example kawa zxr250rr, Yamaha Fzr250rr. Not only where they 4stroke but also inline 4cylinder. Just sad their where limit to 180km/h what they could reach on 5th gear. Still, they did not had any chance against Suzuki Rgv 250 or Aprilia Rs 250 2stroke on acceleration :)

dont mean to bust your chops but i have an rgv vj21 and a zxr250 and they really are the same for acceleration stock for stock but it is alot easier to modify the rgv to produce more hp and it would be 6th gear not fifth for the zxr250 and contemporaries
